I wouldn't call a 7 hour exam a waste! You have to have the stamina to be able to do this exam! The more practice the better you get, the better you will be when its for real... A 7 hour exam is the truest representation of what the actual exam is! The problem is that the Kaplan exam has gone through some radical changes to truely represent today USMLE. So there is no real estimate of what you will get when doing this exam

I think it can be pretty accurate as to what you will get on the USMLE tho. You have to remember that the USMLE says that a 60-70 Percent of questions must be correct to be able to pass.

Try to use the Qbank estimate that Kaplan comes with to figure out your USMLE score.

I did the Kaplan simulation exam about one week before I sat for step 1 in December of 2010. My step one score was 231/99. Kaplan is a very good Qbank and any score above 60% is a good predictor for passing. I'm not sure if there is a good correlation between percent scores in Kaplan and actual scores on step 1 but if you are scoring above 60% in Kaplan, chances of failing step 1 are low. Below is my Kaplan simulation result:

Overall Correct: 64%

Number correct 207
Number incorrect 112
Number omitted 0
Number not reached 3

Answer Changes:
Correct to Incorrect 22
Incorrect to Correct 34
Incorrect to Incorrect 26

SCORES BY SECTION

Block 1 61%
Block 2 59%
Block 3 67%
Block 4 72%
Block 5 57%
Block 6 70%
Block 7 65%

According to kaplan's score estimator, ur 64% = 234 ... which is pretty close to ur real score.....

I think tht estamate is realistic.. I got a 63% on my simulation.. But i only scored 212/89 on my USMLE. I think i got the hard exam, or i just completely underperformed as most of my assessement scores were in the 216-240 ranges. Oh well.. Just remember that these exams can have a variable range of score estimates, Lets say this exam has a +/- 20 point differential.

This was my score sheet

Overall Correct: 63%

Number correct: 202
Number incorrect: 120
Number omitted: 0
Number not reached: 0

Correct to incorrect: 7
Incorrect to Correct: 13
Incorrect to Incorrect: 13

Block 1: 72%
Block 2: 70%
Block 3: 59%
Block 4: 57%
Block 5: 59%
Block 6: 70%
Block 7: 54%
