I'm an IMG. Graduated 3years ago. Joined my post graduation neurology in India., But discontinued my post graduation as my family shifted to US . Started thinking about preparing for steps.. so could anyone tell me how to start my preparation?., what books I have to get?., how much time is required for preparation?., how to plan ?., and how to apply for exams?., and what all are required to start..?

Friends, I' l be waiting to hear from you guys..!!

Most people start with Step 1, which is the most important exam in terms of scoring highly. You can read about the exam on the USMLE website. The information booklet also has sample questions in there so you can get a feel for what the exam looks like.

You might be interested in an article I wrote covering an overview of the entire process to residency in the U.S. here. As you're focusing on exams, you should make sure that you give a lot of thought to what work/volunteer experiences you will do. This is critical. Minimize the "gap" in your CV and do something that will help your application.

A popular IMG exam prep pathway is to purchase First Aid for the USMLE, do question banks (particularly from USMLE World) and read/watch/listen through a more comprehensive review. There are many options. You should see what might be a good fit for you. Some examples are Kaplan, Doctors in Training and Firecracker. There's many more that you can see on some of the USMLE Polls on this website.

I've written about my own preparation experience, including what books I used, in an article here. I also wrote more in-depth about how to use First Aid here.

Good luck to you!
