Arrow Details please...

Hi Usmledee,

First of all Congrats on a great score!!! I have been reading all of your posts that you have been posting for past a few weeks and I feel like I am in same exact situation as you...so, getting some advice from you will really help me out!

I am a couple weeks away from my real exam and now I am starting to panic and stress out...I feel like I don't remember anything, and that I am going to do very bad...is that normal? Also, I know you took NBME 7...what did you score on that? And as far as comparing to the actual exam how would rate NBME 7 (in difficulty of questions, length, material covered, predictability of the actual score, etc.)? I will be taking NBME 7 within a couple of days...and am very worried about doing bad on it...so, just wanted to know how will it be compared to the real one?

Also, please give me any other advice that you think will help me. And please do share more about your prep and experience of the exam. THanks and party now!!!

CONGRADULATIONS! Awesome score. Can you please tell us what you were getting on your NBMEs and how far before the exam did you take each one? Thanks!

Default My experience

First I wanna say how awesome you guys are. I know only a few people on this forum, yet I get i all these congradulations. Thank you so much. I am old IMG that had to really go back to the basics of the basics and work slowly thru. I first started off with the Kaplan series long ago, but that was on-off due to several interruptions during this journey. I didnt watch all the videos, only selective ones bec they were so time consuming. Did one good read of Kaplan I would say and then started UW. Now I can look back and maybe contrary to what many would believe, I would say UW is excessive. I felt it went way beyond the required. That is my personal opinion. I enjoyed taking NBMEs, although I did not do all, but they gave me a sense of security each time I saw a passing score. I thought it was important to get some sort of consistency.

noone_123i.. you asked me about NBME 7. Yes I did get to doing that. My score was 540/231.

Here are my NBME scores:
NBME 1 (offline) 80%
NBME 2 (offline) 85%
NBME 3 (online) 540/231
NBME 7 (online) 540/231
NBME 4 (online) 610/246
NBME 6 (online) 540/231
UWSA 1= 580/236
didnt have time to do UWSA 2, donated to a friend.

I did 1+2 long ago, cant really say when.
3 = 6 months ago
7,4 = 1 week apart , not sure exactly, maybe 2 weeks before my test
6= Ok you might think I am crazy but I did this 2 nights before my exam date..yeah I know. So as you can see, I was pretty consistent with the 231 mark, actual score is 234. So I wasn't not too far from that.

The last few months of prep were basically introducing myself to FA since I wasnt one of those people that sat and made notes into FA. I started that but really got frustrated with the whole note making process and decided to just move on. At the end of my prep stage, did just FA and NBMEs and thats it, no UW/kaplan/other. Bec I felt I could barely get a grip on FA in itself. I HATED that book, seriously.

I wanna give special thanks to doctorsmonsters, who took the time to help me with NBME 6 the day before my exam.. and also special thanks to JJtheMD who helped guide me when I really needed confidence and direction. Thank you to all the kind people here. It is a blessing to be surrounded by positive people and thats what makes this such an awesome forum.

You guys rock..GL to you all !!

Arrow Thanks

Thanks for your experience...but I still wanted to get your opinion on what you thought the questions on the real exam were most similar to (as far a difficulty, length, and possibly the material covered)...NBME 7, 6, UW, etc?

Thanks...I will be taking nbme 7 soon and am really panicking because I have heard that it is very hard...is that true, in your opinion, compared to other nbme forms?

I thought it was a real mix and you can't really say that it looked or felt like one particular assessment test you've taken. It is a cocktail of short, long questions and q at different levels of difficulty. I didn't feel personally that it compared to any test I've taken before. All I can tell you is that if you have enough focus, then length, time, ect will be irrelevant bec the exam is doable but you must have endurance to withstand 8 blocks. To me that was the most difficult part of the test, staying strong, bec my knees kept popping against each other under the table the whole time

Good luck. You should be fine. I and so many have been exactly where you r right now but you will get thru it and someday you will be passing this advice to someone else.

THankyou so much for sharing your experience, was really looking forward to it......
Got a question for you--
So basically how many times did you do kaplan-- im assuming once? After that did you stick to only FA and UW?
how many times did you do FA and UW and how many months?

Thanks so much! oh also, are you a carribean IMG or an IMG from other country? Just want to know the background, because I really like your plan and thinking of following it

Wish you best in future steps!

I am an non-Carribean IMG, dinasour I would say. Did one good read of Kaplan, did UW after, once for the entire bank and one extra time for my incorrects. Did not repeat the corrects or see them again. Had it for 6 months bec i went very slow at the time and there were literally weeks and weeks where I would not do questions due to other issues I had with family, ect so it can definetly be done in just a few months. FA I went thru it twice. I still dread that book and never wanna see it again, sorry..I just have very bad memories cursing at it as I was doing it. But it still remained my single source for prep at the end. Thats pretty much it.
I feel the important thing to realize here is that you have to be honest about your capabilities, and try to be realistic when to do any mock exam. At the end be accepting of where you are and what you are able to do and just go for it. This is the lesson I have learned. Hope this helps.
