Default Plz help i need advice; failed usmle step 1 by 2 points!!!!

Hello everyone; first let me give a little introduction about myself;

1.) I did all my high school in usa; was a very good student; then after high school decided to pursue my medicine career in india; so if anyone knows or heard of the kmcic/aua twinning program i was part of that; its where you do 2 yrs premed and 2yrs basic sciences ; so i did mine in manipal karnataka india!

*I graduated in december 2010; with very poor basics of course; i had many retakes etc in manipal; but somehow managed to make it thru the 4 years; i had to repeat my last sem; b/c i failed micro and pharm; but ne how i graduated in december 2010.

*from january 2011-april 2011 we had to 5th sem here ; which is like a preclinical semester all caribbean colleges require; after coming here; we were part of american university of antigua; we had icm exam at the end of april 2011 which i just passed on the dot;

* as part of aua we are also required to pass the comp shelf; which is a prerequiste to take step 1; so i was struggling with that in 2011; after april 2011; i was very confused even where to start studying i was honestly all over the place hearing advice from a million people confused me even more;

*so in july 2011-august 2011 i did pass program in champaign illinois; which was a bad idea because at that time my basics were very bad; so i was completely lost; i had no idea how to connect concepts or even get the hang of things there; so when i gave my comp in august 2011 i failed it.

*then in september 2011-nov 2011; i took kaplan 7 week live lectures in toronto, canada; which was a little better just because kaplan explains things from the basics and beginning; so after my live lectures were over i had a month till my comp which was in december 2011;

* by God's grace i passed my comp in December 2011 just on the dot which was a 64% at the time.

* i stayed back in toronto from january to march 2012; doing my own kaplan videos and preparation not effectively; i was all over the place again;

* in april 2012 I moved back to michigan; and since then things have really fallen down for me; i was taking a month for kaplan subject; i did barone videos for patho; then biochem; behavioral; around august i finished immuno kaplan; and then i was getting really drained out with kaplan videos so then i decided to switch to first aid;

around september 2012; my college started giving me a hard time saying i passed my time limit to take the step 1 etc; which i was getting panicky; b/c my first window period i picked was april to june 2012 and then i extended so i had till september 2012 end but at that time i wasn't ready to give the step 1 at all.

My college aua told me i had to redo my comp shelf again; this time they changed it b/c it was a prometric shelf not the paper ones we had before; so then i just read some of fa didn't finish all of it as always; i never got thru fa even once completely; ive always skipped chapters or would never get to finish it before any exam. so i took my shelf in december 2012; failed again; i got 58 and passing was 65.

It was really devastating at this time; i had no idea what to do b/c my college aua would only give me one more chance to take the shelf before they kicked me out; so i had to give it in april 2013; during feb to april 2013 i had private tutoring in chicago; which obviously didn't help b/c i failed the comp again; i got a 57% that time and passing was 70 in 2013.

So then I switched over my university to all saints dominica; around june 2013; then i decided to take kaplan live lectures w/ center prep again around july 2013 i moved to chicago; my 7 week live lectures went till mid august 2013!

* then i tried to study on my own again; which was n't effective; september october november december 2013; from november 2013 my qbank scores and all starting going up a little bit; i had my initial date december 30 2013; but i cancelled as my uworld self assessment form 1 showed a 188. i thought its too risky;

* so then i moved back to michigan january 2014; and my last window i had expired on march 31 2014; after which i would have to pay $820 again; which i didn't want to do; so in jan 2014 i did kaplan genetics videos/ notes; kaplan physio lectures all except endocrinology and gi; kaplan anatomy i did upper limb/lower limb; i did some brs physiology;
got through half of dit 2013 video lectures; did most of pathoma except for 2 chapters;

* march 03 onwards i had online usmle tutors; because i was getting really freaked out as my exam was nearing by and ther were many sources i wanted to do which i couldn't get through all; so they gave me a schedule and everyday they would go over uworld with me and tell me high yield concepts for about 2 hrs via skype; in march 2014 i took 3 nbmes; they kept telling me i'm ready and they honestly gave me a lot of confidence; i honestly felt ready also

*i took my exam finally on march 28 2014; exam day in general went pretty well according to me; i had no mishaps or anything; my breaks were on time; i felt well; no anxiety or headache issues; i held my nerves together pretty well; i felt good overall;

*unfortunately i had no clue results would come by so fast: but i got my results april 16 2014; my score was 190; which was 2 points away from passing!!!

*PRESENTLY; I'VE JUST BEEN RELAXING FOR A WEEK; B/C FOR2 DAYS AFTER RESULTS CAME I'VE BEEN CONTINOUSLY DEPRESSED; CRYING; GRIEVING EVERYTHING FEELS SO TOPPLED DOWN;

I'VE BEEN WANTING TO EXPRESS IT ALL ON THE FORUMS; IF ANYONE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCES PLEASE DO SHARE; ANY ADVICE; MOTIVATIONAL WORDS ANYTHING WOULD REALLLY MEAN A LOT TO ME AND HELP ME NOW;

WHERE DO I START AGAIN? WHATS THE NEXT BEST STEPS I CAN DO???

PLZZZZ HELP PLZZZZZZZ ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFUL

THANK YOU

HERE ARE MY SCORES ON NBMES AND QBANKS SINCE I STARTED PREPARING:

NBMES:

1.) JULY 05 2011; FORM 7; BEFORE PASS PROGRAM; NBME SCORE 30! ITS EMBARRASING I KNOW; BUT I'M BEING HONEST

2.) AUGUST 02 2011; FORM 12; 180

3.) AUGUST 19 2011; FORM 11; 260 THESE 3 WERE DURING PASS PROGRAM!

4.) AUGUST 11 2012; FORM 12 AGAIN I TOOK; 240 SCORE!

5.) APRIL 18 2013; FORM 12 AGAIN; 320 SCORE!

AFTER THAT NBME I DIDN'T TAKE ANY NBME UNTIL THIS MARCH 2014!

THESE WERE THE FOLLOWING SCORES ON MY 3 NBMES I TOOK THE LAST MONTH OF MY EXAM:

1.) MARCH 15 2014: FORM 16; 360 WHICH IS 198 STEP 1 EQUIVALENT

2.) MARCH 22 2014; FORM 13; 310 WHICH IS 188 STEP 1 EQUIVALENT

3.) MARCH 23 2014; FORM 15; 350 WHICH IS 196 STEP 1 EQUIVALENT

MY FINAL SCORE ON THE EXAM I TOOK ON MARCH 28 2014; FAILED 190!!!!:

I DID UWORLD QBANK 2X: THE LAST MONTH MY OVERALL SCORE WAS 58%.

BACK IN 2011 AND 2012 MY OVERALLSCORE WAS 35%.

I DID KAPLAN QBANK ONCE; BUT DIDN'T FINISH ALL OF IT; MY SCORE WAS 40%.

AS YOU CAN ALL TELL THESE 3 YEARS HAVE BEEN THE ROUGHEST HARDEST PHASE OF MY LIFE RIGHT NOW; COMING THIS FAR AND SPENDING SO MUCH MONEY ON ALL THE COACHING PROGRAMS; I REALLY DON'T THINK QUITTING AND GIVING UP MEDICINE IS AN OPTION FOR ME; I REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHERE I WENT WRONG AND WHAT I CAN DO BETTER THIS 2ND TIME AROUND???

THANK YOU AGAIN; SORRY FOR THE LONG POST; BUT I HOPE U DO READ ALL OF THIS!!!

I'm not in a position to comment much as I'm still in the process of preparing for Step 1 but I would like to commend you for all you have battled since 2010. It takes a lot of courage to do that, and since you almost passed, I would definitely say, take another try and do the best you can.

1) Take a short break (3-4weeks) so that you can get over all the depression and dejected feelings out of you.

2) Then, Perhaps you could try to go back to the qbanks and see where your weaknesses lie (may it be a system or a subject) and focus on that.

3) You could perhaps try another Qbank like USMLERx to consolidate stuff in FA in case you had a tough time remembering stuff from FA (I sure have this problem.)

4) If you still have a tough time with FA, I ave heard many positive reviews about DIT (which I plan to use soon.)

5) If I may ask, what is your study process like? How many hours do you out in a day? Do you take notes? Do you conceptualise stuff? Do you study all days in a week?

Good luck, and I truly hope you can come out of depression and face this beast, this time with 150% more hard work and focus. I understand that you will constantly be thinking of your score, but try to see it as an opportunity where you can learn the stuff even better now.

Yes I've read in many of these forums how preparing for too long brings diminishing returns.

yes, try to go for kaplans live lectures. the doctors are awesome., i did them last fall, i met a friend that failed step1 once and she was using this strategy: be sure to first read all the material so you can review it while they are lecturing. and be sure to take step1 at tops 1 or 2 months after the live lectures so everything is in your head.

GOOD LUCK and dont let ANYONE pull you down.
you can do it. just put all your enthusiasm and all your energies into it.
