Default hCG question

UWorld question207
A 24-yo caucasian female is treated for infertility. She receives a short course of menotropins followed by a single injection of hCG. The latter drug is used to simulate which of the following events?
answer: luteinizing hormone surge...
Anovulation is a common cause of infertility. One way to treat anovulation is the administration of drugs that act like FSH and LH. Tx with menotropin (human menopausak gonadotrophin)acts like FSH and leads to the formation of a dominant ovarian follicle. Ovulation is then induced by administration of a large dose of hCG, which simulates the LH surge.

I found it interesting as a question. I had not understood the importance of hCG and it's action like FSH and LH. I found in FA that hCG has a subunit identical to a subunits of LH,FSH and TSH. b subunit is unique for hCG.

Yes, you will find many questions related to this topic. Also telling you or asking you the reason why pregnant women with normal TSH have high t3-t4 and subclinical hyperthyroidism or women with hydatiform mole can have have severe hyperthyroidism, and that similarity between those hormones is the reason.

So keep it in mind and thanks for pointing it out, this might come helpful to many people that doesn't realise or remember that.

Oh, thank you for pointing out this. Actually, i did not realize that specific action of hCG and it is easier to remember things when you discuss them with others...Now, i can remember the correlation with thyroid hormones...
