Default IMG Medical Student from India Confused. Need Help

Hey, So i am a newbie in this forum, been following it since one year but posting for the first time

OK, so I am in the second year of my med school right now, an average student, never failed, never topped.

And after thinking thoroughly i have decided to take the USMLE journey. just to let you guys know i will be applying for Match 2018 / Match 2019. So the question that has been bugging me is

SHOULD I OR SHOULD I NOT GIVE THE STEP ONE EXAM DURING THE THIRD YEAR?

let me get this straight, i really want to do my residency in some prestigious huge University hospital and not community health centers ( that's what has been driving me to opt for this journey )

SO i m really hoping for a score more than 250.. and i really want that score no matter what. So my question is, would i be able to achieve that score without studying Medicine concepts from Harrison.. Would i be getting time to read for step 1 in my 3rd year? Is the medicine basis mandatory for getting 250+?

Please any help would be appreciated! waiting for you guys to help me!!

Save It!

Is it mandatory? Not at all.

Keep in mind that getting into a university program isn't all about scores. Visa issues are an important factor too, as are research, clerkship sand perhaps even some research experience (in a tangible form.)

This is all needed as many university programs (more so with the prestigious ones) are not very IMG friendly.

Regarding your score goal, it's nice to start with one but you'll realise that at times it might not be possible. You'll find that out once you start your prep.

I wish you the best of luck in this journey!

Thanks for replying qirkergaard.. i know issues like Visa status is not in my hand and there are not many IMG friendly University hospitals, and other factors like research and electives mean alot,
but like, if my score is less than 235 those university programs will not even consider me, on the other hand having a 250+ score will atleast make them consider my profile, ( if i am not wrong )
So do you think, if i give my Step 1 during my Internship years, i would be more aware with all medicine cases, so it will help getting atleast 20 marks boost in my score? Am i thinking on the right path? Please help! i know talking about getting a 250 is easy and actually getting it is hell alot harder, but well we can shoot for the stars right? and i will give my everything during my preparation once i start preparing.
