Arrow Hi there.... I took the exam yesterday

Hello guys...

I'm going to tell you, what I'm thinking about the exam that I took it yesterday. First off, I want to emphasize that it's a doable test - I'll go as far as to say it was easier than some of our shelf exams. Coming out of the exam, you will feel like your innocence has been stripped from you - but looking back, UWorld was wayyy harder than 60% of the questions on the real thing. You will get LOTS of gimmie questions - first order, easy questions that make you look around and want to ask, I did sign in for Step 1 right?? lol

It's a friggin marathon though, and I think that's what makes the difference. My brain wanted to shut down after 5 blocks. I can't stress enough to do 3 blocks of q's day timed in random mode of 46 q's to really get used to answering q's and build stamina. Stimulate a full length exam (2 NBMEs back to back) about 2-3 weeks before the exam (don't do it too close to the date coz it really wears you out). Also, the more questions you do, the better you get at answering them. I did just over 5000 questions (UW, some of Kaplan Qbank, NBMEs, WebPath, some others forum qns). In retrospect - I would've kept it to UW, NBME and WebPath. Any extra time you have to do questions, spend it doing UW over and over instead of looking for other Qbanks.

Study materials for step 1 are...

Watched Kaplan videos for physiology, biochem, micro and Pathology
Read Kaplan books for other subjects
Goljan audios and RR (100%)
HY Neuro (100%)
RR Biochem (100%)
Read FA (100%)

Qbanks: self paced NBME

NBME 1 - 234
NBME 2 – 240
NBME 3 – 242
NBME 4 - 244
NBME 5 - 236
NBME 6 - 238
NBME 7 - 247

UWSA 1 - 254

Free 150 - 86%

UW = 73% all blocks of 46, random, 100% completed

Thanks to forum staff and members for the precious helps and supports.

Hi friend, congratulation you have taken the exam. Now you can relax for a while and hopefully within 3 weeks you will get excellent score. I believe you will because your UW and NBME scores reflects stability of your performance. You will get 99 for sure

Anyway, what's your recommendation for the last 4 weeks of step 1 preparation ?

I suggest you to focus on your UW notes. Just go thru all qns that you had it wrong and read the explanations. Make sure you understand all the concepts from UW coz they follow the exact pattern from NBME and real exam.

I wish you good luck.... study smart not too hard.

Ok, thanks, how about FA ? Do you think it's useful to revise it several times ? Did you find lots of questions come from FA ?

First aid is a book of reference, its not a source for concept. USMLE test you on the base of concept and few facts. Only thing will get you master the concept is by doing lots of qns. Start with easier and go slowly harder and harder like UW and NBME.

hey thanks for sharing the great thoughts. But please dont post remembered questions from the exam. it's against the USMLE policy and you will get into trouble. I actually have a friend who got into trouble. BTW they do monitor forums for this purpose. So please don't waste your hard and caareer. Can you tell me how long apart you did your NBMEs?
thanks again and good luck with step 2. Indeed you will get great score based on your NBME scores.

I spend about a months for goljan audio and RR pathology, But I think you can do it in 15 days. Friend of mind did it with in 2weeks. Try what works for you. Make sure you understand everything from the RR pathology book.

Congrats on finishing the exam! Thats awesome!
Is RR an absolutely necessity for the exam? I have not read that book yet and was planning on doing pathology from Kaplan Videos + Lecture notes + Goljan audios and hy notes.

Thumbs Up Congratulations!!

You're one Step closer to your goal. Thanks for every advice, I agree, doing questions is the most important part in our preparation, it's what makes a difference between someone who knows everything getting 90 and someone who's skilled at reading and answering getting 99. Hope you had a big celebration Good luck!

Congrats Dear!

can u please tell if HY neuro is required?

I mean how do u compare it with Kaplan Anat, 40% of which is neuro in itself?

What study plan did u had and suggest for anatomy?(HY Vs. Kaplan)

RR is not that important if you have done really good in med school, otherwise it must in your prep. Lot of students went to Caribbean med school and they haven't done the vital part/core in clinical pathology, for those must do RR and audio. Because it helps me answer lots of clinical USMLE type qns in the exam. Golgan is very good for pathology...compare to Kaplan.

Don't worry if you are getting 40, 50, or 60 even after reviewing some related material. It's not about what you are getting in your test, its really about how much you know in that particular subject. I suggest you to do new qns on that same subject.

Its better to extent UW subscription instead of buying new one, coz you have marked some important or wrong qns in the qbank. Once you subscribed a new one, you may loose the marked qns. However, if you have done UW twice, then keep the UW notes for the last review and now do NBME qn. Make sure you know everything from NBME, don't skip any qns. Coz, lots of concepts from NBME has repeated on the exam. Do 150 free qns from FRED. I had 7 qns from FRED free qns.

My study period was 4months and 12days. I stated with kaplan and ended with UW and NBME. Those 4 months I was doing qns only. I did Kaplan and Goljan 2months before my study period while in school. If you are planing to study for step 1, I suggest you to start with Kaplan video and books for a month and read FA, after 2months of videos and books, start doing qns. Start with easy qbanks like usmleRX, and kaplan then go with harder ones like UW and NBMEs. Don't do USMLE consult and other qbanks, cos they are poorly ranked qbank, it won't kelp you rather confuse you.

hey aktorque,
i have a question. i had activated my rapid review pathology book on usmle consult and and attempted some questions from the goljan rapid review pathology question bank provided. but i just read from your post that u would recommend not to do it.
so just again, i shouldnt do these questions for extra practice? i mean, are the explanations wrong or answers wrong?

so just again, i shouldnt do these questions for extra practice? i mean, are the explanations wrong or answers wrong?
Basically, anything from Uconsult are wrong or inadequate information (laking lots of informations that you really needed for step 1). If you want extra q bank then do Web- path and Robins qns.

I agree with aktorque - the RR questions on Uconsult are really badly written... Robbins Review is humbling but useful, and WebPath is good... Or just do UWorld again?

Default Running out of time

Thanks aktorque for the notes. Can I ask your suggestion ? I am 27 days to my exam date and I just finished 50% of UW and I havent reviewed all chapters in First Aid (I am using Kaplan for revision). Which one is my priority ? Finishing and reviewing UW or reading FA ? Thx

Stop reading the first aid. Finish up the UW qns and redo the wrong qn and marked qns. If you have more time, go ahead and review my UW notes. You have lots of time for study. I believe that 27 days plenty enough to finish up UW and for review. Put 10hrs atleast per day and don't study on the last day. Go somewhere else and relax "sleeeeeeep".

Thanks, anyway, any note taking strategy when reviewing UW explanation ?? Sometimes I spent 3-4 hours just to review one block (all explanation).

When I was taking note from the UW, I always write things down that I didn't know b4 or I never heard of it. If I know the stuff already, I just read through it but not writing down. Lots of things I wrote down on drug MOA and adverse effect.

Default great

first off congrats on your scores!! that's awesome that you did so well.

also, thank you for sharing your notes. they are of great help.it is always nice to hear that we are all on the same boat. sometimes i feel pretty alone in my struggle to prepare step 1 but these forums are very helpful. you guys are all very helpful. I've just got back to the united states and am trying to prepare for my exam. thing is i need to work and support myself so sometimes it seems like i'm never going to get there. however, you guys have been my support even though i really don't write much.

Thank you all for your stories and help

Actually, my study plan was messed up one. You don't want to know that...lol But, the sources for my prep are ... Kaplan videos and books, Goljan Audio and RR, FA(read once) and Qbanks. I think that Kaplan Biochem is sufficient for your step 1 plus FA Biochem.

I recommend you all to do Kaplan qbank + UWqbank + Web-path + Forum qnz posted by USMLE-FORUMS members + NBMEs.

Time: at least 4 months... QBank - UW 2 months enough
