Can someone explain the reasoning behind doing a KOH prep and when it is commonly done?

KOH prep or mount is done in order to visualize fungus. You would take the scrapping of a specimen ex. Skin, nail, etc. Apply KOH, possibly a stain and the look under the microscope to reveal the fungus.

The purpose of KOH is to disintegrate the keratin, so the fungus is better visualized.

Hope that helps!
