Drug NBME UrsodeoxyCholic Acid Question

After eating, 40 year old woman has a vague feeling of discomfort in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. Ultrasonography discloses several small calculi believed to be cholesterol gallstone in the gallbladder. She begins oral therapy with ursodeoxycholic acid. Which of the following rationale for its treatment?

a) Addition of bilirubin into bile
b) Decrease in concentration of bile acid
c) Decrease in ratio of cholesterol to bile acid
d) Increase in the ability of gallbladder to concentrate bile
e) Increase in concentration of lecithin in bile

Can anyone tell the answer with explanation? I got wrong.....

The asnwer is C.
Ursodeoxycholic acid is given orally to increase the bile acid content in the biliary system, decreasing the ratio of cholesterol to bile acid, preventing supersaturation of cholesterol, hence preventing cholesterol stone formation. I got this correct in NBME.

Info some basic questions about the exam

Hey aktorque, I saw that you already took the exam a few days ago...and my exam is in a very few days, so I just wanted to ask you some questions,

will there be any calculator in the real exam like UWORLD so that we can calculate the biostat answers? in NBME, I didn't find any....

everyone says that, it is wise to skip the tutorial so that we can have some extra break time...but my ques is, is there any link so that we can know what they actually want to say in the tutorial....is it like NBME or I can find it in 150 free usmle questions...I haven't took that one......

I know, we can take some food and store it in a small locker, but is it allowed to take energy drink(I'm almost addicted to caffeine, and no point in taking hot tea as it will get cold).....and also what type of food is wise to take???

thanks....

I skipped the tutorial and added 15mins to my break time. If you want to know what's in tutorial ... download FRED from below link

http://www.usmle.org/Orientation/2011/menu.html

You'll see an exact screen format of 150 free qn FRED or UW on the real exam. You'll see calculator on your top right hand side of the screen. NBME screen format is very old and does not have the calculator. I'm sure that there is no need for calculator. Some qns are very easy and you can do it in your mind. I had 2 calculations. one in Stat fining specificity and other one is asking to calculate minute ventilation.

Take what ever food you want with you. They will give you a locker and you can keep them in. Every break you come out to the room and have your food or drink. I took some protein bars and Salmon sandwich plus bottle water. I saw some student brought a 24 pack RED BULL cans. If you want you can bring some beers..
