Why maple syrup diseases causes hypoglycemia?

Because glucogneic amino acids are converted into glucose in gluconeogensis.

In Maple Syrup Urine disease you don't get the amino acids and therefore you'll get hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia caused by maple syrup disease occurs after fasting. it is one of the differential diagnosis for neonatal hypoglycemia.

It occurs during fasting because when the baby fast, gluconeogensis (as pointed out by 13monument above) starts.
