Unhappy Kaplan Step 1 Diagnostic Test

Hey Guys,

So I took the free Kaplan 3 blocks step 1 diagnostic test on their website (kaplan recommended doing that before beginning any of their courses)...and I am extremely disappointed in my base knowledge, I scored %30 . I have not started studying at all, just whatever I am doing in medical school ( I am half way done medical school ). I am planning to do the Kaplan videos and notes, plus the numerous other study material for step 1. I am planning to take the exam in 8 months time. Since I am still in medical school now, I am going to have to study for step 1 on top of my medical school work.

What do people generally get on this diagnostic test before they start their studying?

Do you guys think this is enough time to study and get a high score on step 1?
Any recommendations or words of wisdom are much appreciated.

Thank you everyone,

Thank you everyone,
Don't be disappointed, a lot of people start with scores like that, which is good because that means you'll learn a lot. Also keep in mind that USMLE is not about knowing it all 100% but about learning how to take a test, and answering what they want to know even if you don't KNOW the answer for sure. So, I'd say you have enough time to prepare yourself.

Now, get some good material like kaplan lecture notes and videos, pathos or goljan, and DON'T forget First Aid and Qbanks are your best friends from now on. Take your weakest areas, make a schedule and start with those. It will also help you in your medschool preparation, that's what USMLE is about isn't it?

If you like and are good making schedules, good; but if you prefer you can use an app like "Cram fighter" (iPhone/iPod only, sorry) it allows you to enter your possible test date, when you plan on starting your preparation, the material and qbanks you're using and how much time you'd like to dedicate each day and it makes an excellent schedule, you can go checking the material you've already studied so it's a good way to keep track.

So, best of lucks
