Smile Got my score- 99/241

Got my score a couple of days back, feel really happy

I haven't been a regular user on this forum, but have always read the exam experiences of other users, and found them really helpful and motivating. And so I thought that I should share my own experience as well.

First of all, I would like to tell you that the exam isn't as difficult as most of us think. The pressure of the exam is really huge, but the exam itself isn't quite as monstrous .

I am an IMG from Pakistan, graduate of 2009.

My duration of study--almost 7 months

STUDY MATERIALS I USED:

PHYSIOLOGY- Kaplan
BIOCHEMISTRY- Lippincott (great book)
ANATOMY- Read Kaplan once, then just did First Aid and UWorld explanations. Also did HY Neuroanatomy (highly recommended!!).
PATHOLOGY- Read Kaplan once. After that, I listened to Goljan's audio lectures and read his transcribed lecture notes twice. Also did Goljan's slides. That was more than enough for me.
PHARMACOLOGY- Kaplan
MICROBIOLOGY- First Aid and the summaries of important organisms given at the end of Levinson.
IMMUNOLOGY- First Aid,plus some topics from Levinson.
BEHAVIOR- Kaplan and Conrad Fischer's Medical Ethics book.

Kaplan video lectures- just used them for behavioral sciences and genetics.

I did all of UWorld twice and about 70% of Kaplan Qbank.

NBME 7, 10 days before the exam - 244

The actual exam is very much doable, seemed much easier than UWorld and even Qbank at times. I felt confused after the exam for a while, this definitely wasn't the exam that had been giving me nightmares for the past few weeks, lol. 50-60% of the questions were pretty straight-forward, and the remaining were mostly of moderate difficulty. Around 5-10% were tough, especially a few questions related to various molecular/laboratory techniques. Also got 3 multi-media questions.

The exam pattern itself is quite similar to the NBMEs and the Step 1 practice questions. There is sufficient time for all the blocks. I was able to complete most of them in about 50 minutes, and used the remaining time to revise the questions i had marked.

The main issue that i want to emphasize upon is the length of the exam. The exam is more a test of your nerves and stamina than anything else. The most important piece of advice i can give is to practice as many questions as you can while simulating the exam environment. Even more important is to get a good night's sleep before the exam. For those who study at nite like me,start adjusting your sleep cycle a couple of weeks before the exams. I used Zolpidem during the last week when i couldn't sleep, and also on the nite before the exam. Don't eat much during the exam. Also take along some energy drinks or coffee, whichever suits you, as one really tires out after the 4th or 5th block.

In the end,i would like to thank the staff and the users of this forum. You guys are doing a great job!

Thanks a lot Elizabeth.

One thing i forgot to mention. First Aid is an amazing book,it should be read more than once, especially during the last days before the exam. Helped a lot.

I did UWorld in book form, used to get 70-75% questions correct on average.

And NBME 7.

I graduated in 2009, then did a 1 year house job/internship before starting preparing for step 1.

No,i'm from Pakistan.
I think the book should be available at any good shop selling medical books, especially the ones in the vicinity of med colleges.

Unhappy Need advice

Hello,

Congrats on your score....

Just need some advice. I am an IMG. My exam is in 4 days.........and I'm so stressed, it feels like I don't remember anything.....I don't know about others but the exam pressure and tension are really killing me.....having difficulty in sleeping....nightmares.....just keeping on thinking what am I going to do if I don't get a good score! trying to keep myself cool.....but....

I just want an advice what should I study in these last moments.....
And also, how are the questions compared to NBME? For me, 2 blocks of NBME 6 was really hard.......and many people say the real exam is very similar to NBME 6......what percentages of molecular biology and genetics questions were there? For me, it is the most frightening area....and also, what percentages of questions were long stemmed? And how could you manage time with those long stemmed questions......to get 95 how many questions I can get wrong any idea?? Because, my current condition tells me I am going to do a lot of silly mistakes........

Please reply....

There is no scheme of studying that will fit everyone's needs. I studied some of the easier subjects 2 times, and the remaining 3 or 4 times. And i read First Aid twice. It depends on your own understanding, and the level of your background knowledge.

You're not the only one feeling this way before the exam, almost everyone i talked to felt unsure and tense before the exam. I myself had a lot of trouble sleeping, and i even used zolpidem during the last week before the exam. Don't freak out, you've worked hard for this.
During the last few days,i revised first aid and the questions that i got wrong on UWorld, plus notes of some of the topics that i found difficult. (There's a very good "List of forgettables" on this forum that should be revised in the last couple of days).
The actual exam was quite similar to the NBMEs,but seemed a little easier at times. I don't remember the exact percentages of questions, but genetics questions were relatively easy. Some of the molecular biology questions were really tough, but could have been experimental.
About 20-25% of the questions were long-stemmed,but the time for each block is sufficient. Just don't get stuck on one qs,if you don't know the answer, make a guess and move on. You can revise your marked answers if you have time at the end of the block.
It's difficult to say how many questions u can get wrong. I marked 10-12 questions in every block that i was unsure about,so i guess there is some margin for error.

Just get a good nite's sleep before the exam, and stay positive. Best of luck!

Thanks.
Behavioral sc was my weakest subject as well,as is the case with most IMGs. I studied a lot for it,but still couldn't do very well on the behavioral sc questions.
And yes, patho and pathophys account for the largest number of questions, but these are relatively easier. Prepare well for them, but focus more on subjects/topics that give you trouble.

I appeared in islamabad. U have to bring along ur passport,ID card and scheduling permit.

I'm very nervous about not sleeping the night before too!!!! Did you feel that the zolpidem made you groggy the day of the exam? How early did you take it the night before???

Thanks!

Don't experiment on the night before the exam. I tried zolpidem a couple of times about a week before the exam, did not cause any problem,so i took it on the last night as well. I did feel a tired after the 5th block, but i guess that was because of exam stress.
Give it a trial if you're planning to use it and see whether it suits you or not.
