Planning Started Prep.....Need help deciding Kaplan substitutes

Hi guys

Ok i started my prep a while ago ..and even after going thru all the polls iam still confused with the books i want

I have all the kaplan videos 2010 and all KLN pdfs.i dont intend to join the Kaplan institute and since being in india i find it difficult to get new KLNs.So iam searching for good substitutes.so here is what i have come up with so far

1] Anatomy : either printout kaplan notes or HY combo [Gross +Neuroanatomy ] ?

2] Pharma : printout KLN or lippincotts Pharma ?

3] Biochemistry : Printout KLN or BRS biochem,mol. bio n Genetics ?

4] Physo : BRS Physio !

5] Pathology : Ofcourse GOLJAN !!!

6] Microbiology : CMMRS ....hunting for it in Delhi but just cant find it...will look in chennai too ......if still not ....then BRS MICRO

7] Beh.Science : KLN printout or else BRS Beh.Science....Plus the conrad fisher cases if i can get my hands on it

8] HY IMMUNO

So this is what i have narrowed down to.the time required will be same whatever i choose from the above . Advise me which is the better option ...i have nearly finished goljan and brs physio...so need to get the rest of the books.........but confusion confusion !!

My doubts are :

1] should i take the KLN printout or choose the other options.......or else get used KLN ?....everyone here uses kaplan....so am not comfortable without assurances to follow other books !!

2] Are these book enough or will i need more for ........[since many of my friends who wrote the exam recently told me that there was many Qs from genetics, mol.bio and immuno and the new rules after may 17th ]

a] Biostatistics
b] genetics
c] embryology
d] histology/mol.bio

Hi Noothan, maybe I am not the best person to advise you here because during my prep, I've been using Kaplan Lecture Notes and Videos as the main source for step 1 review. All Kaplan notes are good enough but you need to supplement it with the videos. If I may suggest you, based on my experience and other students, you can supplement Kaplan notes with following books :
1. Anatomy : High Yield Neuroanatomy and Gross Anatomy
2. Physio : BRS Physiology
3. Patho : RR Goljan + Audio

I didn't know about other books but I think Kaplan notes are more than enough for other subjects. I am trying to stick to one resources with similar format, I think it's easier for me to follow them and correlate one another. Hope it helps

hey noothan.......m also from india.....
i've also started my prep a month ago ......i've discussed with seniors and all step takers abt the books for step 1 .....and majority relied on kaplan notes as best study material ......plus u can supplement it with HY neuro and Embryo......BRS physio.......and then FA and Uworld.....many of my frnds did this and have scored 98-99 in step 1.......and i will say that dont run for lot of buks ...stick to the the best u have and go thru it deeply........!!!!

Hi Noothan,
I haven't really used a lot of prep material so I can't advise that much, but here are the ones I used and liked:
Kaplan Pharm LN's
CMMRS is gold, it has alot of micro pharm in it as well
High Yield Neuroanatomy.
BRS Phys
Goljan Path

Not really sure about the other subjects, i've mostly used FA for those. Good luck!

I got CMMRS from Amazon, I am in the US though so I don't know how shipping to india works.

I also forgot to mention, I am using gunnertraining to prep also (a big part of my prep) and I highly recommend it. It takes a few weeks to get used to, but that program is gold especially since you are just starting your prep. Here is a link to a free 1 month trial:
