Kaplan Medical Take the Kaplan Course Now or Later?

Hi everyone,
Just wanted your opinion on what I should do .....

OK, here is my situation, I have spent a year studying for the step 1 and so far I have finished going through the Kaplan/ other books for the exam, most of the time was spent learning the material and I wrote down my own notes to help combine FA and Kaplan. But the thing is that I don't remember much form selected topics, my best would be pathology and a little of physio/pharm. So now I am wondering if I should just take the Kaplan course, right away or if I should first revise and go through each topic and then later after a few months take the course?

Which would be better take the course now or after going through the topics by myself??? so as to not waste time and get the most yield...

Thank you

When do you plan on taking Step 1? The question banks help out alot in helping you memorize.

Arrow Take the course

I'd say take the Kaplan CenterPrep right now, they'll help you remember what you have done all that year and they will shape you up in a matter of few weeks.

I now, it's pretty expensive, but believe me, it worth all the money, just imagine that 99 score

Yeah this question has me really confused, you see the whole time I just reviewed the individual topics, and after each topic I usually complete questions on that particular topic for example:

1. after finishing pathology, I did Robbin's MCQs (based on each topic, like cardiology , respiratory ,etc.) and Goljan online MCQs, and Pretest Pathology MCQs.

2. for physiology I did BRS questions and the end of each chapter, and Guyton's MCQs, and Pretest Physiology MCQs

3. occasionally I did EXAM master MCQs based on topics I did.

also whenever I would do the questions and if i got something wrong I wrote it down and added it to my notes...

so now I am not sure if I should take a Kaplan course of if I should just revise the topics myself and then do the courses...

Hi vrnda! You received some great advice from fellow students!

You are wise to develop a sound study plan now so that the remainder of your prep is efficient and motivating. Also, you are on the right track remediating your errors as you go through questions by making notes.

KaylaMD has an excellent point that the course will reinforce everything you learned so far and identify the high yield, in addition to showing you a smart approach to the exam and question formats. KaylaMD offers good advice to take the course sooner than later saving you time in the long run. You can take a (free!) diagnostic anytime to assess your current strengths and weaknesses which will show where you need to focus.

ElizabethNYC and noothan are correct that questions are imperative. Using a question bank (or two) is the best way to practice exam-like questions while applying your knowledge. As your scores increase, so will your confidence.

Take the NBME self-assessment exam when your self-testing scores are where you want them. The NBME self-assessment exam will predict rather closely how you will score on the actual exam.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to write us at kapmed@kaplan.com. We can send you (free!) study tips and match info, too.

Good luck!
