Is it worth using the 2010 editions of KLN or the edition prior to those ones?

I have noticed that the 2010 edition books have many fewer pages, so presumably everything has been made more concise, and a lot of material that was present in the past has been taken out.

If you assume that I am someone who has NO basic science understanding, would it be better to use the longer versions to understand the concepts better or is it still OK to use the 2010 editions? Do the shorter books represent a trend of the Step 1 exam testing fewer concepts (I doubt this) or are the 2010 shorter books just as good as the longer books?

(again, assuming that I am someone who has no basic science knowledge).
