Egypt help the Egyptian Newbie here!

Hello,

I've started preparing for my the usmle 1 exam about 3 weeks ago.

So far I've finished Kaplan antimicrobial drugs, CNS acting drugs (pharmacology), Psychiatry (behavioral science) and carbohydrates metabolism section (biochemistry). Watching the lectures and adding notes to the books first then memorizing. I plan on hanging all the 300 pharmacology drugs on the walls of my room. so far I memorized 100 of them lol

I'm a 5th year medical student in Egypt and I've other subjects to study so this is as fast as I can get, sadly.

I bought usmle firstaid2010 two days ago and I've been reading the parts I've studied already and it's shocking how the book is small yet not a lot is missing.

I am really really weak at pathology, microbiology and anatomy, would kaplan videos and books be enough to understand and learn the subjects perfectly? or would you suggest other books?(I'll leave usmleworld for next year 2 months before taking the exam)

Any students from Egypt around here?

That's it for now

Hey Kcub,
Here's my advice concerning the material to use for studying.. I am finishing my first time read and already started revising using first aid. My exam is scheduled in July.. so we'll see if my study plan will pay off!
Done all the reading from Kaplan lecture notes together with the videos, except for pathology.. used Goljan rapid review. Its a comprehensive book and it was really useful reading it alongside physiology and pharmacology; system-based.. done lots of integrating and annotating. Looking back, i should've started first aid from day one. I advise you to read it quickly and add the missing info, after finishing each topic (Me.. i found it missing alot, however am the kind who doest like to miss a single detail!) You sure know it will be your only source in the last couple of monthes before the exam.
As for anatomy am planning to read neuroanatomy HY (+Kaplan notes for sure), as advised by alot of members in this forum. Microbiology made ridiculously simple is recommended too, but i didn't and won't read it.
OK! Here's an extra advice =D Get done with the documents required as soon as you can!! By the time mine were finished, mailed to ECFMG, and got my scheduling permit there were no seats available in my eligibility period!!
Well done you started preprations while still in school! Good luck!

"used Goljan rapid review"

Giving the size of the book... it's anything but rapid lol

"read it quickly and add the missing info, after finishing each topic"

I am doing that so I can end up with one source.

"Me.. i found it missing alot, however am the kind who doest like to miss a single detail!"

typical da7ee7a perfectionists

"As for anatomy am planning to read neuroanatomy HY (+Kaplan notes for sure)"

I see. Kaplan it is.

so what was your microbiology source? while we are at it, where do you buy your books from?
I am finding a hard time buying an original book here, I actually made my friend bring FA from KSA.

Good luck with your exams Fatima and thanks for the help.

Just Kaplan and first Aid for microbiology. But maybe u should check ridiculously made easy on amazon if you like to study using 'funny' pictures and clues to help you recall subjects requiring sheer memorization.
Goljan is truly anything but rapid! Studied the first couple of chapters from Kaplan, but didn't like how they put-down the info in a list form. Goljan includes lots of explanations and it really gives you the big picture, as i alluded to in my previous post. However, according to the experience of lots of 99ers in this forum, kaplan won't be an obstacle in achieving your target score. It's all about how you prefer to deal with and process the provided info.
As for books..! Originals used to be sold at Kaplan's offices in heliopolis and dokki. Last time i checked it was a long time ago and now i can't reach them again, they never answer their phones!

Thanks, you've been helpful. I will make sure whenever a friend is coming from ksa to ask him to bring Rapid review with him. I am downloading Goljian audio lectures already. Good luck with your exam..
