Help Second Year Medical Student about to start USMLE Prep

I am a second year medical student and I am about to start my preparation for Step 1. This is my last module of second year, after which I will be in third year. I have bought the following books:

Kaplan lecture notes
Kaplan DVDs
BRS Physiology
First Aid
Goljan RR
Goljan audios
High Yield Neuroanatomy

Do I need any more books? I should start from Kaplan right? I am still not sure whether I should go subject wise or system wise. How do students normally prepare? Since I'm a medical student, I wouldn't have more than 5 to 6 hours a day for USMLE prep. Is that enough? I don't have a problem with spending longer time on prep...even if it takes a year, I don't mind. I was thinking about listening to all of the Kaplan lectures first once and then when I'm done with all of the lectures then moving on to reading the notes and listening to the lectures again while doing the notes. What do you guys think? Is it worthwhile to use First Aid from the start too? Like using it while doing kaplans?

Sorry for so many questions but I'm pretty new to this and so I'm trying to get a general idea of everything!

Hi asfand,

Im am also in middle of 2nd year.ok.heres my suggestion.

RESOURCES TO USE:

ANAT- kaplan lecture notes and vids(for anat, vids r not reccomended)
MUST replace neuroanat with high yield(dont see neuro vids..boring)
PHYS- use BRS. its far far better than kaplan. vids r optional.
BIOCHEM- kaplan kaplan kaplan. notes and vids are awesome.
PATH- throw the kaplan Ln in the trash and use GOLJAN RR+audios
(dont see kaplan vids, do goljan audios instead.)
MICRO-stick to kaplan but please dont see the vids....total waste of time.
PHARM- kaplan kaplan kaplan.vids are good
BEHAV- kaplan kaplan kaplan.awsome

are u from india? please tell me when ur 2nd year final exams will be completed and when u intend to write step 1. based on that i can advise u about ur prep plan.......

Thanks a lot.

I'm from Pakistan.

Writing the exam in 2012 would be nice..but ofcourse it would depend on how much I have prepared till then. But for now, the plan is 2012.

What about you? How much have you prepared? When do you intend on taking the exam?

especially in india and pakisthan there is an entirely false myth- that we should write the step 1 after completing our mbbs course. and all our seniors discourage us writing after 2nd year. im i right? but i dont think so. what about u? have u faced similar dilemas??

That's absolutely true. Getting help from seniors was a complete disappointment. They keep on laughing and saying that you should not even think about it until you've graduated. But there's a med school in karachi, almost all students of which appear in step 1 during 3rd year and most get awesome scores. So I know its not impossible. And I'm sure their must be many students from India too who would have given their step 1 in third year and aced it. Personally, I think that these seniors just get jealous that we are more aware than they were at their undergrad level.

So when did you start preparing?

Honestly speaking i dont know anything about anat, phys and biochem from 1st year. now as i am in 2nd year, i have decided to first become perfect in the 2nd year subjects ie path, micro, and pharm by feb. along with these i also plan to master phys and biochem by utilising holidays and reading when i have the time. so after my final exams, in the month of march i plan to ace anatomy and behavioral. so by the end of march i would have completed one thorough reading of all subjects. in 2 months( april and may) i plan to do HARD CORE revision and uworld q bank.

What do u think about my plan?
as ur 2nd year ends in october u can plan ur time more effectively than me...
What are ur plans??

Well we have that integrated sort of system so we're studying system wise in college. And we did patho and pharma etc from 1st year. But i dont remember anything from 1st year either. Lol. So I have decided to do the current module nicely with college and as soon as its done I'll start revising. Because I don't get much time nowadays during college, that's why I was thinking about finishing seeing the kaplan lectures by the end of this module. That would give me a general idea about everything before I start my first kaplan read.

I love your plan. So did you guys complete anatomy, physio and biochem within one year???? Sounds tough!

Its quite easy. Just go to any professor at your college or hospital and ask him to let you assist on any medical research that he's working on. Most will be happy to get a student to work for them. Once you complete the research, your professor will write an article based on the research which will get published in a medical journal and you'll be an author on it. And then you can write about that article in your CV
