Smile I'm done! The truth about step 1!

IM DONEEEEEEE IM DONE!!! YAYYYYYYYY!!!!! and now for the truth!!!

Okay so last night I got great sleep cuz I have been practicing for about 1-2 weeks! got up at 6am...had oatmeal and red bull = )

Packed all my things last night, had my clothes out!

Was happy this morning cuz I hung out all day yesterday and had tonz of fun!!! didnt even realize today was the exam :P

Didnt really care or feel nervous today, I knew I tried my best in studying!!

Took tonz of stuff with me to eat, even though people say that you wont wanna eat! WELL GUESS WHAT!! I ATE EVERY BREAK, every hour!!! = )

Got there earlier than I was suppose to...which was suppose to be at 8am to start at 830 am...but got there at 730am! so I started pretty early.

Now for the truth about the exam...UM ITS NOT HARD AT ALL. I dont get why people say its hard...Maybe I over studied? but really? umm it was not hard...so for those of you planning to take the exam...if you studied your butt off...ITS NOT HARD AT ALL. So please do not listen to those people that say its hard. Cuz its NOT.

I wore comfy clothes...pjs and flip flops...just chillaxed...sat back n relaxed like I was at home doing UWorld...

Nothing on the exam was unfamiliar..I had seen each and every question as a topic before..nothing at all was new to me..even the experiment questions were do able.

I can't believe people say this exam is hard LOL I was pretty shocked...

I studied for 4 months...a gazillion hours a day...Kaplan videos, Goljan audio, UWorld, DIT..everything was put into my FA. I must have done FA about 7 times...

I didnt do any NBMEs even though I really wanted to ...and I myself advise people to do NBME 7 ... but I only took one NBME which was in medical school in December in my last term. People have asked me in the past what score I would be happy with on an NBME and I answered 240, doesn't mean I took an NBME. I just don't think its necessary. My theory about exams are, either you know it or you don't. In order to take any exam, you need the knowledge. UWorld prepared me on how to answer and think about questions. But thats about it. I didn't need something to predict my score and to practice with more questions. I needed the knowledge to answer them. Everyone is different though.

Hmm what else..I always had like 5-10 minutes left in each block...depends usually 5.

I had I think 2 audios, not that many images. And everything was equally distributed. I think I had very less pharm. Everything else was pretty equally panned out on my exam.

DO NOT get discouraged by those people who say its hard !! ITS NOT HARD AT ALL. Its actually easier than any med school exam Ive taken lol

So Im done! Any questions! feel free to ask. I will let you guys know my score once it comes!!! = ) otherwise WOOHOOO!!!

And yeah I never once felt tired, not even towards the end. I was always feeling the same, happy n normal.

Good luck!!

Hey I have done Pathology Kaplan videos and Pathology Kaplan notes when I took Pathology in medical school. I actually also watched some pharm and micro Kaplan videos in medical school as well. But in January when I started studying for Step 1, I started with goljan audio along with FA ...did that in one week.

Then did Kaplan videos, just once, without the kaplan notes, I used my FA to annotate.

FA helped me a lot only because, my FA is very different from buying it off the shelf (I assume everyones FA is like that) ...I literally re did FA within FA. I filled in all the gaps, I made sense of everything. I didnt memorize from there till a few weeks before my exam. I put everything into FA, just to understand it. It took me 3 months to make sure I understood everything. I saved memorizing for last. So FA is the key to success, but if you use it the right way...which is to pretty much re write FA within FA lol

If I had done FA an 8th time I think I could have pulled off like a 280 LOL

I wish I could be as positive as you are after finishing the exam. I'm absolutely agree that the exam is doable but I don't think it' was easy, maybe because I didn't read FA as many as you did. My second block was the toughest, I marked around 10 Qs, but the rest were OK. Which subject, if any, did you find difficult on your exam ?

Oh yeah sure!! so like I def went cover to cover 7 times. I first did Goljan so that was my first time going through the FA 2011 edition (we used FA 2010 in our last term in med school). I then did all the Kaplan videos, that was my 2nd time. I then went through all of FA alone after I was done with Kaplan videos. I then did FA with a friend on skype. I then did DIT (he goes through all of FA). I then did FA twice in my last 2 weeks or so. To be exact the last 5 days was when I wanted to do FA for the very last time. I was up about 16 hours a day (with a lot of breaks) since January. I got really sick last week. I am sure you can find my post somewhere about that. I got really sick of reading in general, and one of my friends said...thats how you know you are ready lol, cuz you are sooo SICK of all this material. haha. yeah right. But yeah THANK god I managed to do FA one last time in the last 5 days. That just made everything so solid!

Each run took me hmm it depends. The 1st few times took me a long long time. But the thing is, I was up 16 hours a day. I had a lot of time. When I did FA with my friend on Skype, thats when going through FA started getting faster. In my last 5 days, I told myself I will spend one hour on a particular topic, like if I knew it well, I wouldn't spend a lot of time on it. I'd run through each page. There were topics I needed to do slowly and spend maybe more time on. It just depends. :/

Hey!! Aww well you know I think I had the worst 4 months of my life. I studied everyday, all day. And you know I started to realize how this wasn't what life was about. And my dad kept telling me and consoling me that it was okay if things didn't go well, as long as I tried and did my best who cares :P LOL and from then on my mindset changed. I told myself I am going to try my HARDEST ever. And you know I have no regrets. I'm happy regardless. Even if god forbid I failed, I won't be upset at all. I did everything! And nothing was unfamiliar to me, so to me that just shows and makes me prove to myself that I did do everything.

So even for yourself or anyone else, like my dad says, this is life. There are going to be ups and downs and you know whatever. If you tried your best, then thats it. Just leave the rest up to god. I was happy and positive, before, during and after my exam because I wanted my life back lol this experience made me learn a lot. I realized how precious life is and you can't let this stuff get to you. We all make mistakes and there are things that won't go our way. But its okay. Everything is going to be alright. Now I will stop preaching

Honestly, to be really really honest, I didn't find any topic to be difficult. There was probably one question that annoyed me, and it was the audio questions about the heart murmurs LOL all the spots I put the stethoscope on had some kind of issue!! haha But that was like my last question in the last block.

YES! I LOVE RED BULL! It helps me concentrate :P even though its probably a placebo effect :P

But yeah I had oatmeal and like maybe 1/4 can leftover of red bull for breakfast at 615am, I don't drink it often. For the past 4 months, I drank coffee about umm 3 days out of the 7 days. I drank coffee like every other day. The last month, I started drinking red bull, maybe like 1-2 times a week, like half a can each time. Just to get use to it. So this morning I had 1/4 can. And then in one of my blocks I drank about half a can even though I wasn't feeling tired or anything (around 1030am). I just like the taste of it too! But I wanted to like amp up just in case. So I didn't have much red bull today. I had mostly orange juice that I prepared from home and maybe like a sip or 2 of gatorade.

I ate a lot today jeez. lol A granola bar, yogurt, banana, turkey sandwich, doritos, gushers :P, kitkat, cup of peaches.. I cant remember what else :P but every break I was eating something ....always had gum in my mouth ...gave me something to do if I had to think about a question during the exam :P

One break (the longer ones I took) went outside n called someone as I ate my banana.

hey!!!

Well first I took my brand new FA 2011 in Jan to staples to get it unbinded and then have them put it into like this spirally thingy ... just so I can flip through it easily. I thought about putting into a binder, but I hate binders :P

So yeah, I first started off with goljan audio, and added important concepts like things that I probably needed to understand more of, or read over more times to understand. So I put all goljan stuff in like green ink. I then watched all the kaplan videos, and put everything that I felt needed to be filled in or better explained in FA with blue ink. As I was doing all this I was doing UWorld questions, I would put UWorld concepts into red ink :P DIT was pretty much everything that I already had in my FA from Goljan, Kaplan and UWorld, so there wasnt much to add. When I needed more room, I would take a sheet of paper, write on it and paper clip it to my FA in that section.

I did the different ink system just so when I was short on time, or like if I wanted to know which concept came from where you know?

Hey! I am glad that I can help = )

I think that anything is possible if you really want it. You just have to train your brain to being positive and working to the max. I told myself its only 4 months out of my whole life. You know? It was tough, I won't say it was an easy 4 months. It was 4 months of pure stress. Waking up everyday doing the same thing every single day, it was worth it though. I guess I just wanted to make sure I had no regrets, and I have zero!

Ive listed my study plan a few times before. But basically it was 4 months of studying, mostly 16 hours a day. Goljan audios first with FA, all Kaplan videos with FA, UWorld, Skyping with a friend reviewing all of FA together and DIT. I went through FA a total of about 7 times. I spent about 3 months understanding everything, the last few weeks I left for memorizing everything in FA.

Honestly some times I didn't know if it was real or experimental. Overall I felt I didn't have that many experimental. But then I was thinking up to 20% are experimental, so anything could have been it!

They dont mention it in the exam that this question is experimental :P if that was the case, everyone would just pick a letter n move on lol

So yeah usually you can tell because like it has to do with some experiment lol

OOh Cautie Pie cautie pie, u are so beautiiiful!! Thanks for your post. I was remembering of how you were feeling the last days leading to your exam and how you managed to pull through; really well done!...I think you will get that score you desire no problem. I've always found your posts very truthful and sincere so I wish this one time ,now that you are more relaxed, you can shed some advice on my study plan.
I too have my exam in exactly (well almost) 4 months; by the end of August. I am posting a thread with more details in a while..but basically..I'm an IMG, 2 years since grad, been studying well for 4 months now, on and off; done with FA a couple of readings, parts of Kaplan Notes, all of Costanzo Phys, parts of Hy Neuroanat, listened to Goljan and maybe 50% of Kaplan videos and read most of Goljan RR. I've started Kaplan Qbank a week ago, started doing 30 q's per block ..doing it subject-wise.. and I'm scoring around 55% but I'm always leaving 4 questions unreached..I guess I'm taking too long to read the questions.. please comment here or on the thread where I'm posting my study schedule. Anyone else with some input on how to improve, send some lines of advice. Thank you and let's hope for the best Cautie Pie. Don't know u but I think I'll miss u when u leave the Step 1 forum.

Hey cautie, I was wondering how many questions you were doing in your last 2 weeks? I remember you had said you stopped doing them from a certain point on because it felt like you already knew the answers. I feel like that too when I do uworld but I feel like I might be out of touch with questions if I stop doing them. I'm scared of leaving questions behind I guess. What should I be doing at this point? My main focus is just memorizing my annotated FA right now.

Heyy!!! = ) I didn't do any questions in the last 2 weeks. I just couldn't do questions anymore lol I was done understanding how they are going to ask questions and how I need to answer them! I felt that I really needed to sit down and make sure I knew and remembered everything.

And yeah I just felt like I was going through the same questions, because I went through UWorld once, so I knew most of the answers already! which I felt was going to be a total waste of time!

I dont think you should be scared to leave questions behind. I really really think that in your last 2 weeks, to just do FA as many times as you can. I am 100% sure you understand how they can ask the questions! Even in DIT he recommends that you stop doing questions towards the end of your studies. Mainly the last 5 days. He said the same thing, like you should be done practicing on how to answer questions. The last few weeks and days are super important to make sure you have all the info in your brain. If you still want to do questions, you could at night when you have nothing to do. Or if you get sick of studying, you can switch to questions just to have a change. But honestly, at the end FA ALL THE WAY!!! A MILLION TIMES! lol

Honestly, I didn't want to buy FA 2011, but I figured who cares why not!! and you know there wasn't much difference at all. But why risk it you know? I always think you should get the updated FA, just because. You dont want to regret even one new section added!

I also have the 2010 and there are minor differences. Today I found that zolpidem and ebstien anamoly are missing in the 2010 edition. if you haven't started studying hard yet and you plan on doing the exam this year then get it.

Congrats, Cautie Pie

I've felt the same in my Step 1 exam. It was incredibly easy. However, unlike my expectations of getting a higher score, I got the same score NBME predicted (241).

Step 2 CK is a different story, however. It always feels vague, or at least that's what I felt in my exam!

THANK YOU for all this valuable insight. I have a question for you. Do you feel that most of the questions on the real test were straight out of your FA or do you feel that a large amount came from your annoted notes from other sources? I ask this because I've been focusing heavily on basically getting FA memorized for the test and not relying on many extra sources besides Uworld. Do you think that the majority of your questions came from FA and Uworld...or should I start going into the other sources?

Thanks!!! = ) I was always ranging from 65 - 70% the first time around. I cant really tell you what my ending average was because I did UWorld 1.5X so it made my % even higher!

No I did not do Kaplan Qbank, only UWorld!

Yes the exam was a lot like UWorld, A LOT easier. UWorld is kinda ridiculous sometimes. I would get pissed off and walk away from my laptop a few times.

But the concepts and the way they ask questions is a great way to prep for this exam!

I really think that FA and UWorld can get you a great score, ONLY and ONLY if you understand everything from FA first. Then you can just memorize everything towards the end.

I did feel like most of the questions were straight out of FA but more in an understanding way. Like you would have to know its such n such disease or such n such situation they are asking you about, and then answer the question. So like 2nd, 3rd order.

I think its totally fine to focus on FA and UWorld only, but ONLY if you understand things, and aren't just doing questions and going through FA just for the hell of it. Do you know what I mean?

I did all the other resources i.e Kaplan was because I just wanted to make sure I understood the who, what, when, where and why. But thats because that is how I am in reality as well. I like to know why a tv works or turns on the way it does etc :P lol Or I like to watch that show "how its made" (I think thats what its called lol) But it shows you how stuff is made in the factory. Okay now Im just going off to another topic :P lol

My main advice is yes majority of questions can totally come from FA and UWorld just as long as you understand it and not just memorize!

Thanks for the reply! Im definitely trying not to blindly memorize first aid. I'm actually using Uworld mainly so I can understand why things are the way they are. Do you think Uworld explanations are good enough to get a decent understanding? I feel the explanations are really helpful and really connect the dots. I spend a good 2-3 hrs reviewing each block. (yes I'm anxious about step 1 lol)

Hey!!! you are welcome = )

I really think that you should stick to UWorld, go through your wrong answers and if you have made notes somewhere from UWorld, read those! If not, then yeah I would for sure do UWorld. I personally haven't heard great stuff bout QBank, but that is just a personal opinion I heard from my friends!

Yes I think UWorld explanations are really good. I learned new things from there, that I never knew before. It was very helpful!!! Yeah I spent a lot of time reviewing each block too! I think its a great thing to do

Hey Cautie, what did you do for images? I know for neuroanatomy people say look at high yield but for the others, did you just do goljan slides? How much time should I leave out for this? I have one week left and wasn't sure how much time I should devote to the multimedia aspect. Thanks

Heyyy for images, I googled a lot but mainly I used web path as I was studying. And yeah Neuroanatomy was the high yield book! I honestly didnt have that many images. And when I did I knew what I was looking at most of the time, either because of the vignette or just from med school path or yeah from just making sense out of it I assume? lol I didnt do goljan slides :/

I dont know if you should really be doing this one week before to be honest. I think that if you have time to go through web path, but honestly I dont think its a huge deal to HAVE to look at slides!

I really think that the only thing at this point is neuroanatomy, the rest is figure-outable :P

Hello! Sorry I didnt do Qbank :/ My friends told me that QBank is a waste of time. But that is just some peoples opinions. My friends had said its a lot harder than UWorld.

Also Uworld is always the number one choice. So if you have to choose between Qbank and UWorld, def choose UWorld! But if you have a lot of time, then sure you can add in Qbank just to get more practice.

Hey
Did you find Webpath helpful? Is it an absolute necessary source to go through or would kaplan path + FA + images from RR be enough ?

I actually did find webpath helpful, but that is because I am a very visual person. I need to see what is going on histology and gross wise. Because some of the stuff in FA or UWorld mentioned histo stuff and I wanted to just see it!

I dont think its necessary to be honest to go through it, like its not a must. I really think Kaplan path, FA and images from RR are more than enough.

I know some people that didn't even look at images and they felt they could answer the question from the stem. Its very rare from what Ive seen and heard to have to answer just from an image.

But neuroanatomy is def all based on images. Like just with arrows pointing to certain locations.

Awww you guys are so sweet!!! :/

Don't want to sound stuck up, but I kinda live a celebrity life in reality...lol so I'm kinda use to it? I guess I'm never out to become "popular" but I really enjoy helping others. And you know mostly to make others feel better by telling them the truth.

I felt that throughout these 4 months, of course all these forums helped me out. But for some reason, I felt that I never got a clear cut straight answer. I really wanted to know what Step 1 was all about. Of course everyone has a different experience. But you know I really didn't think this was the experience I was going to have reading up on so many posts. I would read posts on a few forums every night. And I told myself that if some how I experience something totally different (which I was hoping for) that I would def come back here and let everyone else know that its not bad at all. Its totally doable.

So how do I feel being a celebrity? lol I like it only because I feel honored to helping everyone that has to take this exam. I want to make it as easy as possible for everyone else. I want everyone else to experience what I experienced. And to be honest, I told myself before taking this exam that I will NEVER ever want to take this exam ever again. Of course no one does. And I would take this exam again even after passing it. Why? Because it wasn't bad at all. I think about it sometimes, I'm like hmm I want to take it again just to take it again because this is what was haunting me for 4 months, and I can face it again and again and again just for the hell of it lol sounds crazy I know. But thats how NOT scary it was.

I don't want to say I had a bad life, but I had a really tough time in life. Especially while I was in medical school. Everything went wrong in life for me. But you know I took each day positive and told myself that I will make it through with all these external factors effecting me.

I know that most people have said that I am positive and happy, which is nice to hear. But I am like this because I have grown up and been through so many problems (like everyone goes through) but you know what, our problems are nothing compared to millions in this world. I always look below me. If I have $10, I can't complain because there is someone out there that has $5.

In the end, I just wanted to say, I struggled and went through a lot but I made it out strong. And its only because I changed my mindset. I really believe if you feel positive, and think positive, you can really accomplish anything.

And Im here for you guys. I really am. I will give you the most honest advice and help you guys through this. Its going to be alright. We can do this! Don't let anything bring you down, life is too short, there is a solution to everything regardless of whatever happens.

<3 my fans LOL

Okay Im done babbling...

Hey Cautie may I ask why you didn't use RR Goljan? Did you feel it was too detailed?

And how many images did you have on your test? Thanks for all the help!

Sorry about the late response! was a bit bz today!

Yes I felt RR Goljan was too detailed...BUT also because I had used it in medical school for Pathology. I just didnt think I needed to add more sources to my studying. I just set a goal and told myself ill add everything to FA. I hate having too many books to study from!!

I didnt have that many images to be honest. like 15 in total no joke..

The thing is, I wasn't too weak in path. I had used Goljan in medical school and kaplan as well.

I think its great to read path from BRS and FA instead of Goljan. And on top of that do UWorld!

Yes I would suggest Goljan, but you know just to understand Pathology. Because he explains it so well! I wouldnt say you have to go crazy memorizing every single detail but his concepts and the way he integrates things is great for understanding pathology

Default Congratulations!

Thanks for posting such a positive message! I'm taking Step 1 next month and am kind of freaking out about it. I'm an FMG who graduated in '09, I took a Kaplan (Center Prep) course in the Philippines last year (I didn't even go everyday so I don't know if that was such a great idea). I lost momentum (not to mention enthusiasm) and I just put it off for the better half of the last 10 months, I'd say... I've recently decided to just bite the bullet so I've scheduled it for June 30... and I don't know if 7 weeks is enough time to prepare. I mean, I've been over all the material at least once before, so I figure I should be alright with a last run through... Whaddya think?

I completely agree with what you wrote about how you don't really need something to predict your scores - what you need is the knowledge to answer each question...

Anyways, congratulations again! It must be a relief to finally have that over with. I hope you got the score you wanted. =)) Good luck on Step 2!

Greetings from Florida!

hi...i dont know how right i am but i think in 7 weeks the best strategy is to go thru Fa again n again and do as many questions as possible.

Hey!!! how are you!! sorry for the late reply!!! I didn't realize there were some reply posts on this thread till now!!

But yeahhhhh you can def do it in 7 weeks, esp if you've some what seen the material before and went through it once. You can use these 7 weeks to really buckle down and just give it your all. Its just 7 weeks out of your life. If I were you I'd really stick to UWorld and FA as much as possible in the last 7 weeks. Seems like youve done some of Kaplan as well. If you get a chance do DIT in the last 2-3 weeks itll help you get through FA since you may be burnt out by then!

Thanks so much for the congrats!! I wont get my score for about another 1-2 weeks Im assuming! Yeah its super nice for step 1 to be over. Ive been super bz but yet have time to bum around just because I can lol

Good luck you can do it, just be positive!

So, just one question for you, did u use the DIT handout along with the videos and if u did, did u find it helpful? I guess that's 2 questions.... my bad

Thank You and GOD BLESS!
Aw thanks!! my clone!!!

No I did not use the DIT hand outs along with the videos, I looked through them and honestly I felt better not using them! At times when he would go through all those questions, I would pause right after he says the question so I can answer it, but most of the time I would just say the answers as soon as he was asking the questions lol kinda like quizzing myself!

Did you get your score yet? I'm dying to know how you did because it sounds like my preparation has been very similar to yours so I'd like to live vicariously through your score until I get my own :P

I am so sorry for the delay. I had some things going on in my life. I went on vacation during the time I got my score and then after that was my wedding lol and then my honeymoon. So not to be rude but I was not thinking about these forums while all this stuff was going on in my life!!!

But thanks for asking about me!! I appreciate it. You all are so sweet!! hope that everyone is well and whoever took their exam did great. And for those going to take it, good luck!!
