Honestly, Ive always thought this through. And Im never giving up. Thats just me though. I will work my butt off for Step 2 and 3. And then see what happens after wards. Regardless of whatever happens, I am going to graduate and get the degree. Residency is something to worry about when it comes later.

I think you need to set your mind on one decision and stick to it. You didnt do so well on step 1, so what. Its life. Don't need to end everything, and act like its the end of the world. Pick yourself back up, and tell yourself you are going to make it no matter what. Make this bad experience into a lesson learned. And work on things that you need to work on. Rock step 2 and step 3. Show yourself and everyone how you can come back hardcore.

I personally don't think you should give up. But if you are going to have this kind of mindset and always wanting to give up and quit when something goes wrong, then maybe you need to really think about this. Because step 1, is just the first step. There are many many more hurdles to come.

I think that you should just understand that this is the score you got, and now you need to think forward. Be strong and understand that this is life. Things like this will happen. Just be positive and move forward!!! = ) You will get somewhere!!

Yeah I dont think you should think that way. Life is too precious to think you are worthless. There is no reason to think that way. You can pick yourself back up and kick butt on step 2 and 3. When residency comes, you deal with it then.

I agree with Cautie pie, definitely don't let this test define who you are or your worth. You are so much more than a test score, you know you are smart and are capable of achieving great things. Really think through any decision you make, but definitely don't drop out simply because of your Step 1 score. Good luck!

Yes TAAOM, please don't let this one mark define you. At the end of the day, it's just a test and you passed! Program directors will look for alot more than just step 1 so make sure you rock the other steps! On the other hand, had you taken an nbme to assess yourself before taking the test? Was it predictive?

We have all heard of that one guy who didn't score well in step 1 and still managed to beat people with 99s for a residency. Remember: Program directors look for much more than just scores. That guy could be you. Even if you're not that guy, you wouldn't want to go through life wondering whether you would have succeeded if you would have carried on. Its definitely worth a shot!

Default Don't feel ashamed....

Don't feel ashamed!! You still have the rest of the steps to take... You can do better! Also you can get good LOR's, You can get 90+ in the next exams. You have done your step 1 in your first try which is good.... Also in the interview with the program directors you can excel and you can get residency... It all depends on you... Look at what Asfand said..it is so true!! Many people have not done so well in the exam but they know how to "sell" themselves making program directors wanting them over the person that got the 99..

Give it a try... !!

TAAOM you should definitely not drop out of medical school whatever happens, you have put in a lot of effort into going through those years of medical school and getting good grades. I know most programs only accept people above 80s, but there are definitely programs that dont have these cutoffs. If you look at the match outcomes for 2009, you will see that a low percentage of IMGs actually got into residency with very low step1 scores - they probably had stellar step 2 scores.

You will never know what will happen unless you go the full distance. Carry on, work harder and you will succeed. Good luck.

Default but you passed

Dont forget there are a lot of people that fail the exam. You just might not get into the field of choice, but there are places that go unfilled... In this cut throat field of medicine where over competitiveness leads to a world filled with asshole doctors, there are some resident programs that see through the test score and pick people over schools. As we say in sales, people buy into the salesman/women not the product and lets hope some descent resident programs buy into the person and not just a score. Head up.

Yes my dear, if you really want something you can get it. Just work hard for step 2 and 3. Just be positive and know that in the end everything will work out one way or another. Worry about your step 1 score will not do anything now. Just look ahead and try to think about what you can do for your future. You can still make it dude, dont worry like this! hugzz

Thumbs Up Are you kidding me?

Firstly you have passed. And it is obvious that your second attempt would be much better than the first if you failed. Residency directors not so stupid - they understand it.
My friend studies in plastic surgery and his score is 80. So step 1 is just small thing to success.
Secondly - test is just a test. It is not a good check of real medical knowledges - that is for sure. You can be really stupid man with pretty good score. So take it easy.
Thirdly. Life is not a work man. Forget about it. A lot of very success people which i know don't understand enough how they did it. If you will work 24 hours per day to be a resident you will probably take some psychological disorder...
Be happy!

Hello ,

I know this is an old post, but if possible and you read this , can you update me on what happened? I received my score yesterday in step 1 as 201 , ans I am still shocked because i really worked hard on it. I read on many forums its still possible if I raise my other steps score / I felt crappy since yesterday from this score, but i feel I shd just move on , and try my best in US clinicals. Can you update me with your news ? Have u matched, what did u do extras if possible that could cover up such scores?

Well i kinda blew my step 1 aswell. But. Hey i passed the most difficult med exam (or at least one of the most ) in the world. I'm still slapping my face every morning in the mirror for letting this underachievement to happen. But i gotta pick myself up and hope for the best for 2ck. Common knowledge is, theres no way to predict our chances using step 1 only. This is a motivation especially for me. And for you OP

Come on man. Some time things we've built turns to crap overnight. Lets just face that and rebuild things again. There are a lot lesser knowing people in third world countries (such as in here) who shamelessly claimed theyre the best. Hey you passed the most difficult exam in the world. Or at least one of em
