Default Pharm Question

Patient X is being given a drug with a maintenance dose of 10mg given four times a day. The half life of the drug is six hours. What was the loading dose?

isn't usually twice? 20mg

Very good. The reason why it is twice is because the drug is given every half life, four times a day equals 6hrs.

I will quote from Kaplan pharmacology:

"For the exam, if doses are to be administered at each half life of the drug and the minimum effective concentration is equivalent to Css(min), then the loading dose is twice the amount of the dose used for maintenance (assuming normal clearance and same bioavailability for maintenance doses)".

So the answer is 20mg!
