Star Score 99 / 260

Been stalking this forum silently so here's my contribution.

STEP1: 260/99 took it on 4/14/2011

Assessment Scores:
USMLE World: 70% 1st time mostly random timed
NBME6: 240 (3-4 months b4 d test)
NBME7: 244 (3-4 months b4 d test)
NBME12: 231 about 3 weeks before the exam
Prometric Practice Test: 91.3% (3-4 months b4 d test)
UWSA1: 253 (3-4 months b4 d test)
UWSA2: 259 about 3weeks b4 the exam

Total study time:
9 months with 6 months of them working full time, though took the last 2 weeks off to cram First Aid for the last time

Study material:
  • Mainly USMLE World and First Aid; did uworld twice with extensive note taking, which I revised couple of times later, FA read it gazzillion of times ~7 times??
  • A beige colored statistic book
  • BRS physio 2x 6months before exam ended up forgetting it
  • BRS patho read about 7% again 6 months before exam and ended up forgetting it
  • Did FA like 4 times before starting with world then after finishing with it I revised it couple of times as well
  • Didn't do Kaplan
  • Last 2 weeks revised FA again for the final time and revised half of my UW notes (with the time I had)
About the exam:
Felt the exam was balanced well, had a little bit of everything, got some questions that were repeated in a diff way. finished every sections w 5-10 minutes left revised the marked q.s ~ 8-12 questions per block 4 items I was kinda sure, 4 items I kinda narrowed the answer and 3 items I didn't have a clue ..
was tense in block one with palpitations etc, then felt sorta relaxed afterward

Exam day:
Redbull shots before the exam with banana with chocolate and Redbull shots during break time

After exam:
Felt I did well, but then felt like crap when I thought about the unsure questions

Night before the exam:
Slept a total of 3 hours spread out here and there

Some advice:
Be sure not to make too many stupid mistakes, cause I took the NBME 7 in extended format and went back to see the errors, I had made a lot of stupid ones like seeing increase as decrease or not seeing gram negative.. so I was reading the questions cautiously on the exam day
Be sure to sleep real well 3-4 days before the exam, just in case u don't sleep well on the last day (God forbid) the 3-4 days before would sorta compensate for it

Hope this helps ..

Good luck to y'all

hey,
-final 2 months: i was finishing uworld second time around, then studied the notes that i took and revising FA yet again n again ...
-my rank in medschool was average
-im an IMG currently in research
-Nope didnt do kaplan and no i dont have that strong of basic science basckground i just did FA alota times and did uw x2 and read all the explanations in uw and took notes thats it basicly
-FA is an ocean i dont think it can be memorized in its entirety but u can come close to it, thats what i attempted to do..
-concerning UW don't go that deep into the explanations cause "sometimes" they get too detailish, u dont need it that much, but nevertheless important

hope this helps

Amazing score, congratz!

I am still wondering if I should get Rapid review for pathology (500 page) or just spend my time going through First Aid over and over. I am an average student at best and I hardly remember pathology, what do you think?

- go First Aid over and over instead of RR pathology
-did FA 4 times to solidify the knowledge b4 starting w Uworld, this way when solving world you can recall more or less where the info is in FA and uworld solving helps u link the info in FA more and more
-for me i chose to read the meterial from one source over and over (helps to retain), rather than reading the same meterial from different sources which i felt wouldnt help me retain the info, cause at the end of the day thats whats imp; retention
-didnt do any anatomy books, i had some anatomy questions some from FA, and world the ones i didnt know i tried to eliminate the choices and tried to think logically..
-no idea about kaplan center sorry

good luck

Congratulations!! Great score!!
Thanks for the info!

Good luck with the rest of the steps!!

One question... when you were working full time, when did you study? Weekends only? If you did study during the weekday how many hours did you do and if so, before work or after work?

Thank you! Best of luck!

Amazing score Gary. Do you feel that FA/UW covered 100% of what you saw on the exam? Or did you find yourself having to rely on info you remembered from med school/ other sources? (I ask because you had great scores in the beginning of your studying so obviously you must have retained a lot from med school).

hey gary!!
congratulations on that amazing score!!! i have to tell you that you are probably the first person i know of who did not do kaplan and scored that much by only doing FA and UWORLD and reinforcing that, which is great!! but i really wannna as to how realistic is this method of prepration?? i mean can you really skip something like kaplan and still do amazingly well?

Londondreams I think the answer is yes. (he got 260/99 and did all UW twice and FA) I got 232/99 and did FA and UW once and didn't finish it + didn't read through alot of answers. So what can u see? DO ENTIRE USMLEWORLD and u'll get that 260! :P good luck
(ofcourse it also depends on your background knowledge, etc)
