Question PKU and Aspartame

PKU Patients are advised to take diet low in phenylalanine and somewhat rich in tyrosine
can some one explain why ASPARTAME (a sweetener in Coke etc) is prohibited in PKU..?

Aspartame is found in food sweeteners. Aspartame is made of two amino acids one of which is Phenylalanine. Therefore, it is contraindicated in the diets of patients with PKU. Its related with a number of side effects which can be read here -

Aspartame = Phenylalanine 50%+ Aspartic acid 40%+ methyl alcohol 10%.
