Getting good scores on the Steps will help you get into a residency program but there are many other important factors also (like getting good letters of recommendation, getting US clinical experience, publications/research and volunteer work).

It can seem quite daunting at first when you are reading about USMLE and the process of matching. I found that being part of a forum like this one was very helpful in getting guidance the process. You also need to spend time reading through the official websites and booklets (starting with the ECFMG and USMLE websites, if you haven't already gone there). It is a long, expensive road. I think it's good that you're thinking about it as a first year medical student. That will give you a lot of time to prepare wisely for the exams and plan your time and academic activities.
