Smile Got my score today!!! 99/246!!

God have I been waiting to write this one!!!

Before I start, I need to say that this forum is one of the best things that happened to me during my prep for step 1, I must thank all the members and staff for everything!!! You guys are Awesome. I'll try to keep it simple yet detailed.

Books:
Kaplan except for pathology for which I used Goljan and Microbiology for which I read CMMRS once and then FA+uworld notes.
Also read Conrad Fischer's hundred cases.

Kaplan Qbank:
Average 68%
Personally I don't think its that high yield. Yes it helps a lot but I feel that I could have done without it. If you want to save up money than do this one offline. But then again, I did it in the beginning of my prep, didn't do it that well so maybe that's why.

USMLE world:

Average 73%
This is the real thing!!! Some questions are actually tougher than the real deal. The interface is EXACTLY the same as the exam so when I was doing the exam, I felt that I was doing uworld. I did all questions once, used the notes utility that comes with the interface as I am really good at typing which saved alot of time. Then I got those notes printed and would read then again and again. Probably the best qbank available!!!

NBMEs:
NBME form 3: A month before the exam- 540/231
NBME form 5: 2 weeks before the exam- 580/240

I found NBME 5 more difficult than the NBME 3 for some strange reason. I wanted to do 7 but my seniors told me its really difficult and I'll get scared, but now I think I should have, after all we have to face the real exam. Wanted to go through all the other NBMEs offline but didn't get the time. I think one should do that as I had a slide on the exam which was exactly the same as one that I saw on NBME 5.

Other stuff:
USMLE Consult Qbank: I won this one on this wonderful forum. I did all of biostats questions but other subjects were just weird! I did it after uworld yet I was scoring below the average user score!!! It gave me nightmares!!! Then I stopped using it and did an NBME to boast my confidence. I would say it wasted a whole week that I spent in depression!!!

Free 150:
87%
Good for practice, I didn't look up explanations for its questions.

Questions of this forum:
MUST DO!! Believe me or not, I actually had a question on the exam that I saw on this forum just a few days before my exam and I could answer it only because I had read the discussion here.

Actual exam:
Honestly speaking I found it easier than I was expecting. Very few recall. There were repeats, as in questions on the same topic, or I thought so. Micro and Pharma, very straight forward and easy! Physiology very tricky, specially graphs and all those isolated preparations questions. There were very few questions if any that I thought were about something that I didn't know at all.

Best of luck to all you test takers!!! Have faith in yourself and the working formula which is kaplan notes+FA+uworld! Its very doable. Feel free to ask any questions, I'll be happy to answer.

congrats for the excellent score!

Please can you also comment on how important is reading up on core textbooks such as Lippincott for Pharmac or Biochem, or Ganong for Physio?
I am asking this because I feel my basic concepts are weak and i dont feel confident enough since I had not been able to master the textbooks well during my undergrad years...

I only studied Kaplan so I wouldn't know about other books but I think Kaplan+uworld+FA is more than enough. Just do the graphs very well. Special those in First Aid's physio, you get almost the same graphs but with twisted questions.

My total time was 7 months, you still have alot of time, just stay determined, you'll nail it!!! Best of luck!

Some people do that, but personally I think no you don't need to get back to those books. Because whatever you feel is not sufficient in Kaplan, will be covered by uworld. The thing is, there's no end to knowledge, you can never learn everything, you just need to learn the right stuff for the test, uworld and kaplan give you that. So the concepts improve with practicing more questions.

Goljan is more than sufficient!!! It covers everything. No I didn't feel pathology was that tough, physio seemed more tough in a way that the graphs were confusing.

@mbilalk, I subscribed for two months, did 2 blocks a day. After finishing it once, I did the marked and wrong questions again. About high yield stuff, I would say that all of FA is very important!!! One has to do FA as many times as possible. I did it in the last month only and thats my only regret that I should have started it earlier.

@patelMD, hmmmm let me think, well all I can remember is that most of the questions were multidisciplinary, I couldn't tell. But very little biochem, many questions from micro. In pharma, I noticed there were many questions about antiviral drugs. I had atleast one or two questions about upper limb anatomy in each block!!! Got two heart sounds, but one could diagnose that from the scenario only. Overall there was some of everything.

@mle2resident, like I said FA was really really useful, I regret not starting it earlier. I started it after finishing uworld and doing my first NBME, ie the last month but I would the right time is to do it along with or before starting uworld.

Thanks everyone!!! In my last month, I mostly kept on revising First Aid and the USMLE World notes that I made. I also checked this forum regularly for questions posted by members. My second NBME report showed I had lower performance in CVS and Respiratory system so revised those from Kaplan and Goljan.

@yasirsattar,
Its upto you how you think you can do better. But if you are doing goljan, you don't need to do Kaplan. Plus if you are short of time and doing uworld, I would say you can skip the goljan audio to. So my suggestion would be to do goljan only first, and then while you are revising it, do first aid with it.

Thank you for the good wishes!!! Same to you.
Honestly I had a very good feeling. I knew there were questions I couldn't answer but no one can answer all of them but overall, I was really happy and thought that the exam is a bit overrated. Wasn't very vocal about my feelings though as thought it might be because I failed to understand some of the questions.

In each block I marked 10-15 questions!! If a question seemed too long or required calculations, I would skip it and come to it after answering all the other questions. There were many questions that I didn't know the answer to, specially those from CNS, so tried to make an educated guess and I suppose that worked.

Thanks you everyone!
@Amin, I did the books twice and some topics/chapters mybe thrice. The second time is a quick review, shouldn't take that much time.

@usluipek, well my neuroanatomy was very week, and I think its questions seemed difficult to me on the exam. But I don't remember seeing anything about cranial nerve nuclei. Loads pf pictures though like one showing the brain stem and asking you to identify a specific nerve.

@Dr Swag, well if you do uworld, most things keep on repeating and what that does is that reinforce all the information. So yeah I think one remembers most of the stuff, atleast the concepts.

@MDMC, congrats man!!! We did it!!!!
