Embarrassed 8 weeks to improve >20 points. Advice?

hello all -- hope everyones studying is going well!

so pretty fragile ego here (please be kind, this is pretty embarrassing ) heres the dealio, yo.

i just took a nbme a couple weeks back and got 185. yikes. pretty much felt like crawling into fetal position. To be fair I hadn't been hitting the books/UW as hard as I should have been, but I have 8 weeks to improve to at least a 205 (or better if possible, its just a practice nbme not the step lol).

I was wondering if anyone had any sort of advice or words of encouragement... feeling pretty alone in this Anything would be greatly appreciated <3

Here's what I've done so far:
  • UW: a while back i started uworld like an idiot (ie. i basically didnt have a solid enough base to begin with. stupid mistake #1)... I started subject base (stupid mistake #2) then eventually did mixed/timed/random, and then marked. I messed up my "cumulative percentage" by the aforementioned mistakes... it turned out to be 45% (with the average of my last 10 blocks being about 54%). I did use it as a learning tool as i added the explanations for every wrong (and many of the correct) answers into FA
  • FA: read 2013 like 4 times. recently got 2014 which i've add notes from 2013 into and have read once after (on 2nd read of 2014)

My plan for the next few weeks is to keep going through FA constantly (hopefully another 4 times), do 20 lange pharm flashcards each night (a weakness of mine), a block of UW (which i've reset) and a block of KaplanQB per day, and spend more time on biochem, micro, behavioral, and upper/lower limb which i apparently suck balls at. Since that last nbme i've been reading FA, being regular with questions, flashcards, and memorizing the crap i hate (eg, micro: which are urease (+) etc) and trying to be as thorough as possible and leave no stone unturned. I hope repetition and hard work pays off

Thank you all for your time <3

Correct Answer Maybe!

Well, I am probably not the best person to give a word of advice, but I will do it anyway! I was on the same boat, but worst. First of all, I haven't been the best student!

One month before my exam I was thinking on doing an NBME, but realize that I only read one lousy time FA, I have done like 25% of UW, and one time Pathoma; of course, I remembered nothing!

So I decided to read one more time FA and tried to keep on doing questions. It took me so long, that when I finally ended there were 2 weeks left for my exam! They, I did NMBE 7, and my score came back as 180 (in step 1 scale).

Obviously I felt terrible! I felt like the end of he world was coming! So I tried to read again FA, but didn't finish it, and did like 3 banks a day and tried to read all explanations like there was no tomorrow!

After 2 weeks, to be exactly the day before my exam, I decided to do another NMBE. This time I did NBME 16, and the score came back as 207 (400 on the score). I was happy for the improvement, however, I decided to postpone my exam anyway. Now, I am trying to study all over again. Just to mention, my last UW banks were around 60%.

So, the think I am trying to say, after this long post, is that an improvement can be done; you just need to identified what is wrong with your study technique! And, if you are very close to your exam, and you are not scoring as high as you want, just postpone it! And I don't say this lightly; I forgot to say that not doing the exam meant the total loss of my money for me, since I already used the one time extension!

So, just keep on studying, keep on doing NMBE, but most important, identified what's the thing you are missing, and I am sure you will be able to do it great!

I hope this wasn't too long! Good luck!

I'm probably not the best person to give counsel cos I'm still struggling to improve my score...
A low NBME score means u still need to work on concepts...not just trying to memorize first aid. Even explanation to answers on qbank are easier to retain when u know your concepts well...
Scored 202 on NBME 15, 3weeks ago. I was depressed for a few days. Decided to hit the books angrily D's time.Going through all d Kaplan videos and pathoma video and revising usmlerx.(did a little over half bfor NBME 15). Did uworld awhile ago...jan

Would do uwsa 1 ds weekend..hopefully I should av improved small. Will do Kaplan qbank for d rest of July and uworld in august.

Your decision actually depends on your target score...if u wanna score above 240...den u need to hit d basics again.if u r satisfied with a regular score, den u can keep revising first aid and uworld...it would surely help
I believed forfeiting d money is actually wot it, in d long run..BT den again, it depends on u
