Default NBME 12: Biostatistics

In a historical study,4753 nulliparous women were randomized into folic acid supplementation and trace element supplementation. In both the groups,88% of the women had their pregnancy ending in live birth, still birth, late fetal death and termination of pregnancy after prenatal diagnosis of the defect.Following were the outcome of the study

Drug given Folic Acid Trace Elements

Neural tube defects 0% 0.29%

All other congential
anomalies 1.3% 2.3%

Based on the data with trace elements group as the control group How many nulliparous women with confirmed pregnancy would have to be treated with folic acid inorder to prevent one child with congenital anomaly?

Can someone help me with this question???

it is pretty simple actually altough it seems very tough. The question baically asks number needed to treat which is 1/ABsolute risk reduction.

So in this question the risk of developing congenital anomaly reduces from %2.3 to %1.3 when we give folic acid supplementation. so the difference is %1. 1/%1=100
