Smile After lots of stress got 99/232!

Hi all,

Finally after a lot of stress, got my step 1 score!

BACK GROUND:
Recent graduate, but poor in basic sciences in my medical school as I didn't concentrate well during the first years.

Prep Time:
6-7 months

Study materials;
Kaplan videos with Lecture notes 2X
Goljan audios 2.5x, Goljan RR once
UW once, repeated pathology, micro questions and read the notes that I made in lecture notes of all the subjects again
NBMEs, UWSA

Method of preparation:
Started my preparation in mid-Oct 2010 with Kaplan videos and lecture notes. After reading each chapter, I used to do questions at the end. Completed my first reading of Kaplan (except path) in mid Feb.

Then listened to Goljan audios once (with the audio transcript in hand) and read RR in one month. So, finally completed my first read in mid March.

NOTE: During my first read, I used to listen videos first, then in 2x speed listened to the videos again with notation in lecture notes.

In the mean while I subscribed for 3 months of UW in mid Feb. Did all the questions subject wise. Finished with an overall aggregate of 71-72% by the end of April (though I recommend completing them in advance and revise again if possible)

This is my last months schedule

http://www.usmleforum.com/files/forum/2011/1/578603.php

Then I took NBME 7 (16 days before) and scored 530/228. I made many silly mistakes. So thought of improvising in my weak areas.

listened to Goljan audios in 2X speed again and Kaplan path videos in 2x speed. It took me 6 days. Covered some weak areas in remaining subjects and took NBME 6 (7 days before exam). Got 530/228 again,, but this time got 2 more correct than the previous one (169 bits correct). Got a star in Path this time but other subjects got relatively weaker. So thought of revising all the subjects once (specially the side notes in Kaplan) in last few days. took UWSA2 3 days before. got 256/700(this seriously is over predicting). took UWSA 1.. 247. But these exams boosted up my confidence even though I knew they were over-predicting. Did USMLE FRED questions 2 days before with 86%.

Thought of taking Zolpidem night before exam but skipped that idea with the advise of my seniors. I was weak in behavioral sciences and biostats in NBMEs. So I reviewed all biostats and behavioral questions in NBME. Actually I got a few questions from those in my exam (lucky me)

EXAM DAY
Endurance is the key. Questions were comparatively lengthier than NBMEs and UWSAs. but I was able to finish the questions in time as some of them were direct questions while some need a serious thinking. took breaks between each block. Drank 4 red bulls (really helpful),,peed after every block.

POST Exam
Most stressful period. Forget about the exam after that is done. I used to keep on recalling the questions and thought of what were wrong and this has been really stressful (not recommended)

KEY SCORES for correlation:
NBME 7 : 530/228(16 days before)
NBME 6:530/228(7 days before)
UWSA2 : 256/700 (3 days before)
UWSA 1: 247/640 ( 2 days before)
FRED 150: 86% (2 days before)
UWorld overall :71-72%

Yes UW is must. U need not memorize,, but u need to understand the concepts.

For me Kaplan Lecture Notes was enough, coz I read that 2 times..

Path around 40%

anatomy 15%

molecular biology 10%

pharma 10-15%

micro and immuno 15-20%

biochem 5-10%

Physio and patho phys 10-15%

behaviour and biostats around 8-10%
