Bacteria Capsular Microorganisms

The famous mnemonic in every book

Some Killers Have Pretty Nice Capsules

Streptococcus pneumoniae
Klebsiella pneumoniae
Haemophilus inlflenzae
Pseudomonas aeroginosa
Neisseria meningitidis
Cryptococcus neoformans

But also worth remembering
  • Bacillus anthracis as it has a sepcial poly D glutamte capsule unlike all others which is polysaccharide capsule
  • Neisseria meningitis type B and Steptococcus pyogenes have non-immunogenic capsules therefor no vaccine
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae has no capsule and therefore no vaccine
  • Bordetella pertussis has a capsule also
  • All capsular agents will show a positive Quellung reaction
