Default Herpes Simplex Type 1 and Type 2

Above the waist = Type 1
therefore Gingivostomatitis, Keratoconjunctivitis, and Meningoencephalitis
Below the waist = Type 2
therefore Genital infections

Since the neonate acquires the disease from the mother while passing through the birth canal (maternal genital herpes), neonatal infections are usually Type 2 regardless of whether it's infection of the eyes, skin, or brain.

Thumbs up HIV Patients HSV Esophagitis

Even HSV esophagitis in HIV patients follows the rule. It's HSV type 1 and it's above the waist.
