Anatomy Tongue Muscles Actions

How to remember tongue muscles and their actions?
Easily from their names
  • Genioglossus protrudes the tongue (genio = chin)
  • Hyoglossus retract the tongue (as it brings it back toward the hyoid bone)
  • Styloglossus and palatoglossus are obviously elevating the tongue as they bring it closer to the palate and the styloid process.
Remember that all are innervated by hypoglossal except palatoglossus which is innervated by the vagus.
