Smile ZumZum Method for USMLE Step 1 Preparation Schedule and Plan

Hi everybody.

I've been asked by one of the USMLE Forums Staff to post my experience in Step 1 Preparation Schedule and Plan. He also insisted to call it the ZumZum method! So here I am writing ...

I am originally from Iran. Moved to USA in the year 2008. Then Started preparing for the USMLE in 2009. My graduation date is 2006. My Step 1 score is 99/256 First Attempt.

Before I tell you the details please remember that this USMLE Step 1 Schedule and Plan may not work for everybody. Because it needs at least 8 months of full time reading which is something not available for everyone (medical students for example).

I also want to mention that this post has also received input from StepTaker before and after it was posted.

Now let's get into it ...

Daily Schedule:
Wake up @ 6 AM. Take good breakfast. Start reading @ 6:30 AM. Take a lunch break @ 12:30. Start again @ 2:00 and work yourself until 7 PM. No reading after 7 PM (you will not retain much when you are tired).
Take one day off each week for example Saturday. Spend time with your family and friends. This is very important, otherwise, you will wear out soon.
Down times and emergencies are expected in everybody's life. If for any reason you miss one day then you have to compensate for it the next days.

General Notes:
A study partner is a good stimulus. But he/she should not interrupt you lots of times. Interaction with others such as your class mates or in this website is very useful.
If you find something that you can't understand or memorize then post about it here in this website or any other forum. Interaction with others tremendously help you retain and grasp the concept.

Materials Needed:

Now the scedule ...

Week No.1 (Promotor Gene Activated!)
Get your materials. But leave the online subscription for now.
Register with ECFMG if you have not done so.
Do not plan for anything within the next 30 weeks. Your time should be totally devoted for Step 1 prep.
During this week, talk to your family and friends and tell them that you are about to embark on the most important step in your career life. Make arrangement on the study location such as your home or a nearby library. The location must be a quiet place and Internet connection and a computer is needed.
Also talk yourself and perhaps in front of a mirror; Tell yourself that you are going to ace this exam and convince yourself you are able to do it and nothing will stop you.
Your aim should be 99 and nothing but 99. You have to believe that any score below 99 is a complete failure.

Week No. 2 and 3 (Anatomy)
Grab your Kaplan Anatomy Book and start reading. Quick reading first then watch DVD and write notes as you watch and then a third reading to fixate the information. Do the questions at the end of chapters.
The reason why I gave two weeks for Kaplan Anatomy is that in the beginning your will be pacing slow and you need sometime before you can pick up on your maximum potential and speed.
When you finish the Kaplan Book. Go and open First Aid. In the undercover against the first page there's a table that show's you where Anatomy is mentioned.
Read all the Anatomy notes in FA and add to them notes from what you have read in Kaplan. (if there's no space put your small sticky and yellow paper notes). Try to write notes in different colors and make your hand writing small to optimize space.
It's important to understand at this point is that whatever you read in Kaplan Notes you'll not go back to it. FA is your final resource and it's the FA page that should be imprinted in your visual memory before the exam. So take care of your FA book and write your notes neatly.
Once you are finished with FA-Anatomy. Grab your Kaplan Qbook. Do the two chapters dedicated to Anatomy. This will help consolidate the matter even more.

Week No. 3, 4, and 5 (Physiology)
Exactly like what we have done with Anatomy but instead of the Kaplan Notes we this time read BRS Physiology. Similarly follow that by incorporating your BRS notes into FA and then do the physiology chapters from Kaplan Qbook.
In my opinion BRS physiology is way better than Kaplan Physiology book. It presents the facts in a very readable way and it's highly exam focused.

Week No. 6, 7, and 8 (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Genetics)
Follow the same Anatomy scheme. Kaplan notes + DVDs, FA, Kaplan Qbook (biochem questions only).

Week 9 (Kaplan Qbank)
Start your Kaplan Qbank three months subscription. Do 5 blocks of (Anatomy+Physiology+Biochemistry). Each block is a combination of the three and not one block anatomy one block physio ...etc. If you notice new information in the Kaplan Qbank that you did not read before then add them in small notes to your FA book.

Week No. 10 and 12 (Microbiology & Immunology)
Follow the same Anatomy scheme. The only omission here is the DVDs, you don't need to watch Kaplan microbiology lectures. The book is more than enough and no need for the lectures.

Week No. 13, 14, and 15 (Pathology)
Follow the same scheme but instead of Kaplan's Pathology book we use Goljan Rapid Review book. Listening to Goljan audio lectures is an option but not mandatory. Remember, incorporate your notes into FA and do Kaplan Qbook's (5 pathophysiology chapters).

Week 16 (Kaplan Qbank)
Just like what we have done in week 9 but this time your blocks are (Microbiology and Pathophysiology only) Do 10 blocks in these two weeks. Whenever, you see something that you have forgotten, go back to your FA and retain the info more in your brain.

Week No. 17, and 18 (Pharmacology)
Follow the same Anatomy scheme.

Week No. 19 (Behavioral Sciences)
Again, the same thing. But also in addition to the Kaplan Behavioral sciences book read Conrad Fischer Book. It will not take more than one day to read. Don't memorize anything, just read it as a nice story. Ethics questions are the biggest reason why IMGs fall behind their fellow AMGs.

Week No. 20, 21, 22 (Kaplan Qbank)
Do 30 blocks (Random all topics and unanswered questions). Two blocks each day. Reviewing FA whenever you think it's needed. Your target is to finish Kaplan 2500 questions before the end of your three months subscriptions that you started in week 9. Do not worry if you are left with a couple of hundreds of questions that you did not answer, leave them and do not extend your subscription.
Your Kaplan Qbank score is not important do not let it bother you.
Do not do Kaplan simulation test. We don't have time for it.

Week No. 23, 24, 25, 26 (USMLEWorld)
Start your two months UW subscription. Do two 46 questions block each day. Again going back to FA whenever you feel it's needed. You score should be above 67%. Do random blocks always.

Week No. 37 and 28 (USMLEWorld)
Do the wrongly answered UW questions. Look back to FA always.

Week No. 29 (NBME)
Do NBME Form 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7. Look back into FA always. If your NBME score prediction is not telling you 99 then you have to stop and think seriously to extend your reading for another one or two months. The reason why I chose to do more than one NBME form is that the questions are very exam styled and it will get you ready. Each NBME is a four blocks exam. Do them in one sitting without interruptions. This is kins of warming up for the big day.

Week No. 30 (Final Week)
Push all the books and materials aside and grab your FA. Kiss it if you want. Keep looking at FA throughout this week. Do not go back to any other book (important). Do not go back to UW or Kaplan Qbank.

Last Day
Do not read, Do not read, Do not read.
Spend time with family and friends, Pray if this soothing for you, Go for a walk or a swim, Watch a movie, ....etc.
Get your scheduling permit and photo ID ready for tomorrow. Make sure you know your way to the exam.

Good luck for everyone

Warning! How come we read Kaplan Once!

Hey ZumZum,

There's something shockingly wrong about your plan. You are saying that we should read Kaplan notes only once!?
People are reading it twice and thrice, see this poll
How many times to repeat Kaplan

If you read carefully you'll see that I mentioned that when you read FA you'll be adding what "extra information" you have found Kaplan to your FA book. Then you keep repeating the FA book and forget about the bulky seven Kaplan Notes books.
Thanks

Thanks its very compact and doable.

By the way do you think videos are necessary if one has already gone passed their first read?

If you are doing well in Kaplan Qbank then no need for the videos. If you are not then probably you should go over them, at least the genetics, pharma, molecular, and physio.

Default no such thing as wrong plan!

and if i may add pls.
there cannot be a wrong plan!! its a plan that works best for each individual. may be different from most ppl but it can never be wrong. ive heard of ppl doing last minute studying without going through the highest polled plan and yet scoring a whopper 99! so yeah.. there isnt such thing as a WRONG plan. just a choice. u can choose to modify it or follow. like i might not follow exactly dr. zumzum's plan but ill definitely try to put in the disciplined hours that he did and read 80% of the material he incorporated into his plan. so then my plan wouldnt be wrong, but just 'different'.

After several weeks of Kaplan notes and FA reading you definitely need a change. Switching to question format will make you more interested and will motivate you.
Moreover, Kaplan Qbank in Pharmacology and Behavior is appropriate disentangled from the other subjects so leaving them to later will not harm.

how did u manage literally 11 hrs daily? did u not take frequent breaks in between?

Of course I took all kinds of rests and stares in between. But the important point is not to read at night so that you wake up fresh next morning.
Of course you can modify according to your lifestyle but that's what I did.

Hi dr. ZumZum,

congratulations on putting up a nice schedule!
i am an IMG too and im gonna take my step 1 in 2 months (July 16) to be exact. i havent really prepared as much as you guys did, i just started last February and i dont have a strict 6-8hrs study times.

anywys, i would just like to ask if its ok to disregard reading FA? coz for this month im just gonna try to finish up on my remaining subjects then i plan on reading FA for a week or two b4 i start on Uworld. So that leaves me just a month to do UW, do you think thats enough time? or should i just try to do Kaplan Qbank instead of reading FA?

Thanks so much in adavnce for your advice, this will truly help!

Whatever is written in Kaplan and FA about them is important. But don't go beyond that.

That's why I mentioned in my post that's it's not for medical students.
You need to find a shorter method to prepare.

I did immunology in Kaplan notes and I watched the videos. I don't know if there's a better way than that.

If you have the time then I think you better do it. If you want to skip one of them then I think you skip Kaplan as I think that UW is more important.

Default hi ZumZum.. help please....

hi i have a question regarding ur plan. just fyi, i've been following about 70% of ur plan. only i did not start kaplan qbank. when i started UW (one month subscription) i was only scoring 40% n that really worried me. but when i was done with FA memorizing, i am now up to an average (from the last 4 random blocks) of 60% (48, 54, 65, 65). obviously im not ready for the exam (which was scheduled 23rd sept) so i postponed it till oct 25th next month.

now im re-reading FA n reading goljan path secret (with the audio, which is helpful in getting us to remember stuff).

my questions are:

1. will doing kaplan qbank help me increase my marks further or should i do a diff qbank? (i only have 250 ques from UW left n i have 6 days to finish them).

2. u mentioned that we should refer back to FA whilst answering questions on UW, but by doing that, isnt our score less reliable?

i did do an NBME form after 2 weeks of attempting UW n it was a mere pass!! i did not refer to FA while doing it though n i hadnt finished reading FA. now im a little scared to attempt more NBME forms. im pretty comfy with UW at the moment.

hi guys,
i dont quite understand he idea of using FA with UWorld. Do you use FA at the end of the day after doing the UWorld questions or while doing the questions.
input is needed. thanks

Default RR Goljan

How much of Rapid Review should I be retaining? I understand and can recall everything that Dr. Goljan mentions in his lectures but once I go back to quiz myself from the text I feel like I can't remember much Any suggestions?

go thru goljan path secret without the audio files again. u should be able to remember 60% the second time around. then memorize FA word for word. u wont forget much then...

yes. i dont think u will have much time to go thru the whole text book again. unless u were planning a long study time before the exam. even then i havent heard of anyone reading the textbook more than once.

here is the thing

there is some mistakes in the schedule
Quote:
Week No. 10 and 12 (Microbiology & Immunology)
Follow the same Anatomy scheme. The only omission here is the DVDs, you don't need to watch Kaplan microbiology lectures. The book is more than enough and no need for the lectures.
is this week 10,11 and 12 or it was mistaken by week 10 and 11 and if so the week no after that has to be change accordingly

Quote:
Week 16 (Kaplan Qbank)
Just like what we have done in week 9 but this time your blocks are (Microbiology and Pathophysiology only) Do 10 blocks in these two weeks. Whenever, you see something that you have forgotten, go back to your FA and retain the info more in your brain.
so is it one week or two weeks cause if we correct the first mistake and add week here you will see that the numbers will go correctly after that

Quote:
Week No. 37 and 28 (USMLEWorld)
Do the wrongly answered UW questions. Look back to FA always.
just error here in writing 37=27

SO NOW TO Y QUESTIONS

1-FOR KAPLAN QBANK
according to your schedule this is what will happen

as you see
if i start kaplan qbank for 3 month from 19-12 i wont use it for the first month except for one week
but if did start from 30-1 for 2 month i will cover the two stops for solving qbank and it will
be cheaper for me
what do you think

2-ABOUT USMLE WORLD

Quote:

Look back to FA always.
i dont know anything yet abt usmle world cause i didnt buy it yet
so do you think that i can do this six weeks in just 4 week (maybe 3 weeks solving and one week for wrongly answered questions or maybe i can print the wrongly answer questions and solve them)

i mean if i follow the schedule i have to buy 2 month usmle world
but if i complete it in 4 weeks then i would buy only one month

what do you think?

thank you very much

Thanks for this post - really appreciate your time and effort in writing this up!

I'm planning on doing the Step 1 exam around August 2011, and will be following your plan, maybe with a shorter study time if possible, but we'll see how it goes.

I'm just in the process of gathering my reading materials, and looking at the Goljan pathology book, I think you have put up a link to the wrong book? I can see 2 versions of rapid review pathology on amazon. The 2004 version which is around 350 pages, and the 2009 version which is around 650 pages. I'd prefer going for the smaller book (haha) but is the 2004 version enough detail?

Thanks!

Search BRS Physiology

Hi ZumZum or anybody else who can kindly clarify this for me...

When it's BRS Physiology time, are the videos also been seen during this time or is the book enough to cover this subject for the exam?

I thank you guys in advance.

i would like to thank zum zum for helping us to organize..

i dont think anybody should take this method 100% and do it..

i think 75% is fine, and one should remodel it for each persons time and study speed..

and like zum zum said.. be honest to yourself if u do not do well in the NBME return for a 2 or 3rd reading..

just finished adding the important stuff to my personal strategy..

have a great day people

and remember.. u r not alone in this journey of a thousand miles... u have GOD and hundreds of friends over the us and world..

have faith believe in yourself!! be hungry to study.. and do ur BEST!!

greetings from Guatemala.
best regards!

Default Love your plan. One important question

Dr.Zumzum, I love your plan. My question is regarding the lecture notes and videos. Did you finish the quick reading for the entire lecture notes for example anatomy, then do the videos, then finish a second reading to solidify information? Or did you do a quick reading for the anatomy lecture notes for the first chapter, then watch videos for that chapter, then do a second reading for just that chapter. Did you do this chapter by chapter, or you just did a quick reading of the book in a few days, then all the videos in another few days, then a second reading in another few days? Hope this makes sense. Thanks!

Hello how are you. Most courses such as PASS, Falcon, and Kaplan are the popular ones and Kaplan has a more established presence and reputation for its self so between the three, I would stick with Kaplan. If cost is a factor, I would definitely stick with Doctors In Training but it is online and requires self discipline. It is a 30 day course and there are discounts for every week extension if you need it. From friends who have taken Falcon, DIT, PASS, and Kaplan I heard the best two are Kaplan and DIT.A friend of mine who took Falcon said, " Falcon is a waste of time and money. Ur best bet is to go with Kaplan since they are modeled most closely to the real thing. If cost is an issue, definitely stick with DIT and you can not go wrong with either of them".
Currently I am using Kaplan videos online and Doctors In Training. Doctors in Training uses reference points to both FA and other sources such as Harrison's, G/G Pharm, Guyton Physio, R/C Path, and Moore's Anatomy.Good Luck!!
