I know I might angry someone with the content of this post but was compelled to ask anyways….

I am currently getting a 54% (tutor, subject wise) on UW. And seeing such great Step 1 scores and its correlations, is making me think otherwise.

I have one month before I take the big exam…. Could someone please help and tell me what and how to prepare in this last month?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Postpone till you solve 1-2 paid online NBME exams and see your desired scores predicted by those tests.
Ideally postpone for 2-3 months.

Hope this answers your question

I just wanted to share my score with all of you since this thread was so helpful during my prep.

Oct. 2013--NBME 15: 179
Kaplan QBank didn't have time to finish...only did half the question: 55%
Jan. 13th 2014--UWSA 1: 221
Jan. 20th 2014--NBME 12: 212
Jan. 27th 2014--UWSA 2: 224
Feb. 2014--UWorld completed once (random, timed[took 1.5mo]): 57%
Feb. 3rd 2014--NBME 7: 207
Feb. 11th 2014--NBME 13: 226

Feb. 18th, 2014--The real deal: 225

I started to really study hard around Dec. 24th, 2013. My prep was mainly through First Aid 2013, UWorld, Pathoma, Kaplan Q Bank, and First Aid QBook for Step 1.

Good luck to you all!

6 weeks studying

Before study period, I read goljan a lot, watched everything in pathoma and read it a second time, and read every chapter in First Aid once. I also did lange biochem cards once. Biochem wasn't taught well so I wanted to get familiar with the material before study time. I had also completed about 70% of kaplan before the study time and had it reset.

NBME 16 online 5.5 weeks from test - 238 -
Both UWSA 2.5 & 1.5 weeks from test - both 265
NBME 15 online 1 week from test - 251

Then I downloaded a handful of NBME's I studied a couple by doing 10 questions at a time and reviewing answer explanations I downloaded from various sites of the questions I missed or marked. If the explanations were good, I would just google "nbme 9 'question keyword". There is someone who typed out the explanation somewhere.

NBME 7 offline 4 days from test - 261

Did Uworld twice. I would 2 blocks of one subject that I studied that morning, then 3-4 blocks of random timed. By the end of the first time through U world I was getting 85-89% right on random. I got 92% right on Uworld the second time through.

I would do practice exams once a week building up to 7 blocks by week three of studying. I would usually use kaplan random blocks/uwsa/nbme 16.

After I completed u world twice, I started doing kaplan. finished about 75% of kaplan. Did my wrong answers in uworld. Then I did what I wrote above about NBME questions. In the end, I did about 7000 questions. Keep in mind, I think I did a lot less actual learning during this time because I did a lot of the learning before with goljan/pathoma. I never touched goljan during the study period. But even then, there still seemed to be so many new facts to learn from first aid and questions.

good luck. do questions.

Congrats For the score.
I couldn't find these simulated tests on Kaplan website. Are these tests only available with Qbank?? Can you please post the link here?

I just finished the kaplan full length simulation with a 72% There were some glitches with it as some of the paired questions wouldn't let me click on the answers for either. Couldn't answer 6 questions because of that!!

Anyways I can't seem to find a correlation with my score and the 3 digit score. Is there a way for me to find that out?

Thanks

If anybody is interested in getting USMLE-Rx, I have a discount code available until 9/4/14 : DOWNQMAX1 $129 for 12-month subscription, you can buy now and activate up to 6 months later if you prefer to wait. I find it to be a pretty comprehensive question bank. It's made by the writers of First Aid, making it one of the cheapest and best out there.

Default Step 1 Score

Hello everyone, here are my results! A little background, I am a recently graduated IMG, studied while in a part time job. Applying for IM next year.

Study Time
8 1/2 Months

Material Used
Kaplan lecture notes and videos.
First Aid 2014
Goljan
DIT Videos
Kaplan Q Bank
Usmle World

QBank and Test Scores
Kaplan Q bank 62%, I did this one first, helped me learn how to tackle USMLE questions, but it does not resemble the real test, it is too specific.
USMLE World: 67%, Random, unused. Very similar to the real test.
NBME 13 online: 226 , 1 month before the test.
NBME 15 online 241, 1 week before the test. It felt way easier than the real exam, but at the end my score was very similar.

Real deal: 235

Hi! I have a 67% on UW and I still have a 30% of unused questions left!
I wonder what score does that correlate? (roughly)

I have done Uworld 1.5X and FA & took Becker live also. Am I just stupid or is there any hope?

Default step 1 experience

I used this thread alot to try to guesstimate my score so I thought I'd post as well...
U-world first pass 73%, did about a 1/4 of it a second time- getting 80%ish Kaplan Q Bank (about 25% completed) 87% average
6 weeks before UWSA 1 257
5 weeks before NBME 16 243
3 weeks before NBME 13 247
(did NBME 15 and 7 offline- don't know those scores)
2 weeks before Kaplan Sim 1 257
1 week before Kaplan Sim 2 258
4 days before UWSA 2 265
2 days before free 150 92%

Real thing: 260

Mainly used Uworld and first aid to study... pathoma and firecracker didn't really do it for me. I got the Kaplan Qbank for the last month mainly to get the full length tests- which I found really helpful for building endurance which was desperately needed.

U have to pass step2 CK above 240, CS at the first try and step 3. then do at least one good observership to get good recommendation and the chances are high then good luck

Post Step 1 jan-22-2015

IMG. Spent hours during my prep looking at these... obsessing. Returning the favor. Took them in this order.

NBME 7 156
NBME 12 181
NBME 13 200
NBME 15 200 (2 mo out)
NBME 11 202 (1 mo out)

UWSA 1 234 (2 wk out)
UWSA 2 226 (1 wk out)

NBME 16 213 (2 days out)

Score calculator graph thing 219 (2 days out)

USMLE *215*

Materials: FA 2013, Kaplan (just the neuro section) UW, Kaplan QB.

Most useful strategy: copying down EVERY wrong Q on a notebook and breaking them down even if it took more than 1 page.

I'm lazy as hell, took my time, partied in the process WTF not... If I could do it, you're gonna be acing this. Hang in there Bro's!... you got this. Best of wishes from PR.

I used this a lot when I was studying for step so I thought I would return the favor. I took my exam on March 23.

NBME 7- 220 (December 2014)- before I started studying
NBME 11- 241 (January 2015)- 2 weeks into studying
NBME 12- 241 (February 2015)- 1 month into studying
NBME 17- 256 (March 2015)- 2 weeks before the test
NBME 15- 258 (March 2015)- 1.5w before
NBME 16- 266 (March 2015)- 1w before
NBME 13- 266 (March 2015)- 1w before

UWSA#1- 265
UWSA#2- 265

Kaplan FL #1- 80%

Real Deal: 259

Little upset about missing the 260, but honestly the real thing was so hard I was sure I failed.

If I would do it all over again, I would do way less practice questions, and way more repeats of FA

I only did FA once, but did 5000 practice questions, but I regret that;
should have done only 2000Qs and like 3 repeats of FA....

here's my detailed post written before step1

NBME a day before Step1

i started reading kaplan books and watching the videos. it took me 4.5 months
then i heard the goljian audios and watched sketchy micro.
started qbank of kaplan and then did uworld random timed.
took the nbmes. those gave me the final push of confidence that i needed and after that the real test

Got a 246 on step 1

hope you do well

Many do the same questions of qbank the second time. And of course this score is higher than one of the 1st pass. So it is specified 1st pass or 2nd pass.

We'll always make mistakes. And we'll always +/- our average when we guess, sometimes and some days doing better than others. You made a fantastic score! Be proud of your accomplishment and move on to do even better on Step 2. Congrats!

I am expecting my score in couple Weeks.
I wish I could do that well.
I did NBME 11 and I got 230 1 week before test. Free NBME 77.2% couple days before the test.
I would really appreciate any thoughts regarding my possible score!

Thanks a lot!! I'm hoping for an Ortho residency, so better scores matter. (European IMG by the way).

PM me. I'm at a US institution world-renowned for its ortho program and would be happy to help advise (not ortho interested myself, but have plenty of contacts that can help us figure out what's best for you). IMG, as you know, is always a huge challenge. But from what I've seen, that score with proper quals/CV/research/letters seems sufficiently competitive if you apply *and* rank post-interview wisely. Either way, good luck.

P.S. I've not thoroughly examined this forum, am more familiar with SDN. If PM is not an option, reply and I'll return to elaborate.

Hi,
I did uwsa 1 before i started with uw q bank(2 months back) and scored 192. Then 2 days back took uwsa2 and scored 214. However i have been doing offline nbmes and here s my score
Nbme 5 - 70% correct 2 months back
Nbme 13 offline - 78% correct 2 days back.
I was planning on giving my exam in a week. But now i dont understand whether to rely on nbme or uwsa . My goal is a minimum of 230.

Post study s

Hi butterfish,
Congrats on your amazing score. I'm an IMG and I did the Kaplan live lecture course. I just did my first NBME and for 215. I'm very discouraged at this point. I'm starting UWorld tomorrow and I hope to take the exam in 2 months. Would you please share your study schedule with me. It would be more than appreciated.

it doesn't seem as if i can msg you or put my email here. Would you post the schedule here pls?

thank you

I sent you a response from my phone weeks ago and just tried to send you another. I apparently don't have enough posts to send you a PM yet. :/

I'll save it and can send it to you on studentdoctor.net via the same account name if you register. Otherwise, I'll try posting a few more times. Sorry, didn't realize that was an issue.

Default Self Assessment exams

I think the real exam score correlation with self assessment depends greatly on the duration between the 2 tests. Overall NBME form 16 predicted my score more accurately than UWSA (+1 point vs +11 points).

I found this forum extremely helpful when preparing for Step 1, so I would like to give something back.
A little about me: I’m a 3rd year medical student from UNIBE, took the exam during the second semester of my pre-clinical year. I decided to do Kaplan Qbank twice, the first pass I ended it with a 60% and the 2nd pass with 76%. After that I started doing Uworld and finished it with a 70%, tried doing a 2nd pass but did not have the time to finish it, so I did a second pass of only wrong questions. I used pretty much every resource that I could get my hands on, but I believe that Pathoma, DIT and Uworld were what helped me the most. It was a little complicated to manage school work and step studying but doable. The exam was definitely not the beast that everyone talks about, if you walk into the exam with some confidence, everything will end up working out. Good luck to everyone.
NBME 12 Dec 11, 2014 380 = 202
NBME 16 Apr 14, 2015 500 = 228
NBME 15 Oct 25, 2015 480 = 224
NBME 13 Nov 01, 2015 530 = 234
NBME 11 Nov 14, 2015 540 = 237
UWSA 2 Nov 14, 2015 650 = 248
NBME 17 Nov 28, 2015 560 = 241 + 4 Uworld question blocks
TEST DAY Dec 2, 2015 253

Congrats!
