Default What did you wish you HAD done for your Step 1 Prep

...When you came out of the exam or while you were taking the exam...was there anything you told yourself that you should have done ... but you did not do it?
...Something that could have made your Step 1 Prep better...

Unhappy few things

Good one:
First let me say what I did do: I followed general advice from people and went over uworld like3 times plus extensive noted which I went over at least 5 times! I had Kaplan- Qbank which I did about 50% of and mainly in biochem and genetic since I am weak in those area. Did 100% of usmle RX with notes which I read at least 5 times. + FA specially for so called low yeild topics + Goljan notes and audio + 5 forms of NBME all in the last 5 weeks.

Mistakes:
1. Should have slept the night before, but did not fall sleep no matter what I did
2. Should have focused on Kaplan Q bank rather than uworld since my exam looked nothing like Uworld and very similar to Kaplan Qbank!!
3. I wish I concentrated on so called low yield topics! I had over 60 questions on histo/ path slides and for sure over 40 derm questions!!! But only 6 cardio on my first block, 2 on second block and 1 on my last block!!!
4. Do all the NBME and do them way ahead, the questions help

Conclusion:
this exam is so random, you never know what you get, you can be lucky and get everything like uworld and FA or be like me and study so hard and miss on areas.

So for step 2 , I am not taking chances and listening to experiences, I am doing everything and all details and oh yeah Kaplan Q-bank is being done and focused on this time

Good luck to you all

You know I think that there is so much in FA that some may not realize it. I used FA along with watching ALL kaplan videos. And I also did all of UWorld, I am re doing it again. But I feel like I know most of the answers or have seen the same stuff before (obv because I did UWorld already and annotated in FA).

I honestly think your best bet would be to do UWorld and if you have time do other Qbanks.

I personally came to terms with FA, UWorld, Kaplan Videos and DIT being the chunk of my prep! But I guess ill let you all know once I take my exam! lol

hey

thats what i intend to do.

Kaplan lectures [pharma,anatomy,biochem].....videos also not all
Micro just FA and Uworld -......................will this later on come to bite me ??
Brs Physio and behavourial science
Goljan path RR

Iam doing Goljan path right now...........later on plan to revise just goljan rr and FA in the last month

So my doubts are

1] should i annote from kaplan lectures too ??............if so how do i know what to annote into FA [ i find everything in there important
2] Uworld ...do we have to annote everything that is not there in FA ??

3] last month Memorize FA and Golja [margin notes and tables ]............thats the norm right ??

From what Ive heard from friends who have recently taken the exam is that FA is enough for a lot of things esp Micro. But the thing is you can't just buy it off the shelf and think you can memorize all of it.

So if you do kaplan videos and Uworld ..annotate in FA, then FA can be your sole book to study from. I just used Kaplan and UWorld along with FA. And the way I annotated was things that were either not elaborated well in FA or like things that I found I was weak in. I guess once you start watching Kaplan videos you will understand what I mean. Same goes for UWorld, there are things that you will know but then there will be the odd things that you want to write down in FA. You dont have to write everything down but just key points to help you remember certain concepts. Its almost like reading a paragraph and summarizing from it.

What I did was I actually listened to Goljan first. Then I did all the Kaplan videos along with Uworld and my FA. I then went over FA with a friend like we did certain topics everyday and talked it out. I then did FA by myself with UWorld. And now I am doing DIT with FA and UWorld.

I think its a matter of being repetitive. But you can only be repetitive once you understand everything. Dont start memorizing in the beginning is my advice. I feel like it will not get you anywhere.

First understand by Kaplan videos or whatever other sources you have. Then do most of UWorld, understand from there. And during I'd say your last month, do tonz of questions and stick to FA.

This is just my opinion from friends and reading tonz of forum threads. Again I will tell you in 15 days what I thought on the exam = )

Cool my advice

my NBME were all above 550 except one form which I did not got 440ish. I had an Qbank of 75% and Uworld first time 58%. after the 3rd was up since I was getting almost perfect scores...but I think the first time counts! My score was 92% and for all the work I did; very disappointing.
I did do First Aid, inside out and in fact mine looks like it has been through hell and back. and I did really made notes and focused on uworld.
My advice is to do both Qbanks and don't take chances. From my experience people just keep saying uworld and FA but infact if you ask most of them , they have also done Kaplan Qbank/or Qbook. I also know people who did uworld and FA and got 99% and though exam was exactly like uworld!!
DONT take a chance and at least go over it with attention to details. I know few people who had the same feeling that Kaplan was very similar.
Leave no room for regrets!
I am doing both and plenty more for step 2, but interesting enough( and I was happy to see that!) in the CK forum someone just took CK and posted that his exam was very different than what he has been hearing and look nothing like usmle world and alot like KAplan Qbank... another proof that one should do both.
Best of luck

I'm curious. For those who said they wished they reviewed FA more..... How many times did you guys go through it? And also, did you choose that choice because you felt that the real thing asked a lot of tiny details in FA that you skipped over?

I went over it twice, but after the exam I felt that I should have gone 4 or 5 times. I can safely say that over 90% of the questions in the exam are covered by FA.

In what context? Like I've reviewed KLN for concepts once, and read FA once. Now I want to focus on FA only, so is it just straight memorizing from FA now that i've understood concepts?

I feel like I might have a hiccup on some concepts so i'm revising KLN again, good idea or should I just focus on FA?

Now that you have grabbed the concepts, just keep focusing on FA to memorize whatever you can memorize from it. By the way, I don't think any human being can memorize FA 100% but just do what you can.

Hey! I did FA about 7 times...I felt that I understood most of everything in FA and then memorized everything towards the end. I went through FA 7 times so it is possible to memorize like MOST of FA. If you go through any book multiple times, it just sticks :P

But keep in mind, my FA had a lot of kaplan stuff in it, most of UWorld and anything extra from DIT, anything extra from Goljan.

The questions are not straight from FA. Some are like pharm, micro, embryo, immuno. But mostly everything else is conceptual!

And I wish I did my FA (I say MY FA because it had A LOT of stuff added in it) the 8th time :P Maybe I could have scored 280 lol..waiting for my score still!!
