Default doubt- membrane physiology

according to kaplan med, chapter - ionic equilibrium and membrane physiology
for chloride -
assuming resting membrane potential (RMP) IS -70 MV , Increasing chloride conductance hyperpolarizes cell and If RMP is -80mv or more negative increasing chloride conductance depolarises the cell. isn't the second statement wrong ? since increasing chloride conductance will make the cell more negative hence -80mv will go to -90mv and so on . which is clearly hyperpolarizing the cell and not depolarising it
