Kids Images and Clues to etiologic diagnosis of diaper rash in children

In a child with diaper rash many diagnosis should be considered. Here are some tips to help you how to diagnose the etiology of diaper rash

1.Irritant contact dermatitis (following contact with urine or stool/ may follow a bout of diarrhea, lasts <3 days with appropriate management/ spares skin folds)

2. Candida (involves skin folds/ lasts>3 days without antifungal therapy/ associated with satellite lesions/ accompanied by thrush)

3. Acrodermatitis enteropathica (diarrhea, hair loss/ involvement of cheek, perioral area/ bilateral symmetric involvement of diaper area/ beefy red appearance)

4. Langerhans cell histiocytosis
(severe hemorrhagic diaper rash unresponsive to other treatments)

5.Seborrheic dermatitis (involving skin folds/ with yellow crusts/ associated with involvement of other skin areas)

6. Scabies (papules and nodules severely pruritic/ in other family members)
