CT Scan Ring Enhancement in Contrast Brain CT Scan

Although the ring enhancement seen in contrast Brain CT scan is a frequent buzzword leading to the diagnosis of brain abscess, one should not forget the other possible causes that the USMLE may play with us.
Here's a list of possible causes:

  • Brain tumors (primary or secondary mets)
  • Toxoplasmosis, specially in the HIV patient
  • Hydatid cysts
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Tuberculoma
  • Resolving hematoma
  • Postoperative changes
  • Aneurysm
  • Brain infarction
