Question Teenager girl using Marijuana!

The mother of a teenage girl complains to you that her 17 year old daughter has been behaving differently, and has had a decline in school performance. The mother is concerned because she found marijuana in her daughter's room in the past. The doctor interviews the teenage girl privately and she admits to using marijuana before but she decided with her friends to stop this habit . What do you consider this ?

A- normal adolescence
B- substance abuse
C- schizophrenia
D- major depressive disorder

Yes. Substance abuse but in the past, not now.

She is normal adolescence now.

What is the question testing us?

The key here that qualify the case as substance abuse is the deteriorating school performance, otherwise if she was doing well at school then it's normal adolescence.

i think it's A, normal adolescence, part of expermientation and since she has stopped now, it's not abuse.

Default I think it is B

I think this is a case of Substance abuse. Her past history makes her more likely to be abuse, also her school performance is decreasing.

There have been studies showing that teenagers or people before the age 21 using marjiuana have increased risk of schizophrenia. I thought i would just add that in because i found that interesting.. I wish i knew where the article was but i know some textbooks show that fact also. Maybe in BRS psych or in kaplan behavioral, not quite sure.

B...the teen is addicted because she is still behaving differently in addition to the fact that her grades dropped. The mother knows when something is not right and it's the change in behavior that alerts the parent. She should get a drug screen after 30 days or so to see if its in her system still.

That's what I think, but what's the answer?
