Thumbs Up Went from 193 in NBME to 224 on the USMLE in 25 days !!! Here's what I did

Its been a while since I posted! Hope the usmle-forums community is doing great. Here's my step 2 ck experience (short and brief):

First, my exam and assessment scores along with the dates I took them:
(All assessments were done online).

July 2 - NBME 6 - 193
July 7 - NBME 7 - 193
July 17 - NBME 4 - 208
July 22 - UWSA - 216
July 26 - USMLE - 224

As you can see, I failed ALL the NBME's I took. The only assessment I passed was the UWSA 4 days before my exam. What I did in these 25 days from my first NBME to my exam was a lot of hard work; tons of UW questions (3-4 blocks per day + review of all the questions whether right or wrong) along with reviewing MTB 2 in areas that were weak according to my NBME score report.

My study time was 2 months; Half-assed during the month of June and unbreakable, structured, and disciplined during the month of July.

The materials I used included DIT Videos 2012 (twice) along with MTB2 (once) and UW (75% done; scored around 64%). That's all I did. Everytime I took an NBME, I reviewed all 4 blocks the same day. Then I reviewed and did questions on my weaknesses that were indicated from my NBME score reports. I bought the extra feedback in all the NBME's ($10 more but well worth it and at this point, $10 here n there doesn't really matter when it comes to getting a good score!). I made a schedule and stuck to it no matter what; if I didn't review or complete a certain number of topics and it was time to take the next NBME, then I took my NBME without completing those topics. STICK TO YOUR SCHEDULE. And make it intense. Work on your weaknesses. That's the only way to keep moving forward.

I booked my exam in a center that was 3 hours away from me so I booked a hotel for the night before close my center. This was helpful and I didn't have to stress the morning of the exam. On the exam day, I had a light breakfast, kept some snacks in my bag; especially water bottles and Starbucks frappucino bottles along with some fruits. Took breaks after EVERY block. 5-10 mins. Took a 15 min break after my 5th block to eat some snacks. I went to the last second in each block. Barely had time for the abstract and drug ad questions. Guessed on a lot of them. I missed one question in a block coz I didn't notice the time and as soon as I went to pick my answer the block ended. The exam is lengthy and will test your patience. Stay focused. This was the boss battle of life but I prevailed.

I recall that I was very unsure of whether I should take my exam or not. I was getting burnt out by the end of it but I knew that I gave it my best. It wasn't a stellar performance (below average score on the exam, failed NBME's, barely passed UWSA, poor UW performance). But what matters is that once you give it your best, just be confident and go write the exam with all your heart!

Also, don't be discouraged by reading posts on this forum. People who don't do well or do less than average usually won't post their scores/experience. I was disheartened by looking at posts like "I scored 250, but I was really hoping for 251" or "I scored 250, I'm happy but could've been better" or "I scored 250, would I get family medicine? I'm doomed!!" ... Don't pay attention to these posts. They'll throw you off. My score isn't great, its not even above average. But I still believe my application for residency will be a decent application.

If you guys have any questions, feel free to ask me!

Hey, I remember you as well!
The test was good. UW covers a lot of the material that might not even be in MTB 2 or DIT. It's a really good source for learning as well as testing yourself. I used it mainly for learning purposes and to manage my time. Although I must say that once you go in the exam, for some reason the test questions seem longer (can't recall if they were actually longer) but I ended up going right up to the last second with each block. Bottom line: UW is a must.

DIT definitely helped me. It has good reviews. I would recommend DIT but its up to you if you want to commit to it or not. I used Step Up. Its a great book and I preffered using it as it was being used in DIT. If you use MTB you might end up spending a lot more time finding topics etc. Also make sure you do the DIT study quizzes. I made a list of DIT HY topics. I will make a post about those so its more viewable.

I wanted to know this too! I was doing usmleworld ck questions and a lot of old basic science topics keep coming up. I took step 1 almost 5 years ago. Should we revise first aid step 1, goljan? Or redo other questions?
