Unhappy Any Advice About My Sad Story..!!

Hi there,

I have taken step 2 CK * 3 times so far .. I failed ALL.. The first one (58/145) i admit i was not ready and i was unaware i am not ready.. 2nd and 3rd (both 71/183) i felt i was ready and i got the same exact score..?!! I started studying at Jan 2010.. Now, i am preparing to take it for the 4th time.. BTW, i took step 1 once (was not serious at all but took the test in order not to waste the money/fees of the exam after i postponed one time; a very costly, silly, foolish and evil advice of one of my friends who has taken the test at an earlier time.. He passed all the exams from the first trial and became a successful doctor in the US now) in the very beginning and failed.. Then, i decided to focus on step 2 CK first.. Also, i failed step 2 CS one time and am waiting for the result of the 2nd trial that i did a few days ago..

I am a US citizen IMG, having a lucrative non-medical career with a luxurious life style.. My eternal unrelenting dream is to be a practicing physician in the US even for just one day of my life..

The total amount of money i 've spent so far on taking the exams and purchasing the study materials and assessment exams and so forth is over $7000,00 (seven thousand US dollars).. I am still willing to spend double or even triple this money just to be a licensed physician in the US.. I may be crazy but that's what i am..!!!!

I was pretty much confident of passing/success with a good score when I recently got a score of 470/223 (i.e. 88.46) in my last trial of the NMBE self-assessment exam just 2 days before my last failed trial of step 2 CK.. However, my expectations/predictions were wrong again..

I study only from 1st Aid book (which i think is not so bad), USMLEWORLD Q bank (completed it 3 times), Kaplan Q bank (completed one time) plus the complete set of Kaplan staff video lectures of 2002 (Conrad Fischer was still having hair, so young, fresh and so classic in teaching..)..
I really don't know why did i fail so many times, nor do i know what should i do now to pursue my goal.... However, i strongly believe that there must be a mistake or a constellation of mistakes i am doing which i must figure out ASAP and keep trying.. ANY ADVICE OR COMMENT from any one will be really appreciated..?:sorry: All kinds of criticism, sarcasm or even cursing are welcomed and happily accepted..

In case any one wants to communicate with me in private, my personal e-mail address is:

Best Regards

Alan Ropair

Hey man!

If becoming a MD is your dream, you have to keep on it. So think seriously if this is what you want. Once you are 100% sure that you want it, go ahead, fight it, and you are going to make it true.

There are a lot of things that can go bad in your preparation. I am not an expert but I realized them during my preparation. I hope you find this useful:

1. Knowledge: How do you think is your knowledge about the material? Probably you should get more books to read and acquire that knowledge. First Aid for step 2 is not good enough for taking the exam.

2. Qbanks: How did you did them? Timed, untimed, tutor mode? In the begining you can do it in tutor mode in order to learn a little more, then when you are feeling more confident, do it timed so you can practice for the exam. Remember, this is a test, so you surely want to do a lot of questions and in the same conditions that you will confront in the exam.

3. Reading: How is your reading?, I mean, did you find any difficulty reading the huge vignettes that the exam shows to you? Did you need to read them again? That would be a problem when you are under examination because you will face a lot of stress which definitely will affect your performance. You will find that many question have a lot of distractors which may appear good answers but they don't

4. Stress: It is normal to be stressed before an important test, especially a USMLE, however you have to realize that you prepare a lot for this, and practice a lot for this so don't let your insecurities to show during the exam.

I am not sure how affects you the fact that you are going to the step 2 first. However I can tell you that the knowledge you acquire during the USMLE step 1 helps you a lot with the step 2. My advice in this case should be that you do a review of a pathology book, such as Goljan Pathology before reviewing the material of the step 2.

All the best.
