Default Failed CS, Failed CK, Should I Continue?

Well the topic says it all.. I have an attempt in CS and failed CK few weeks back.. Have Step 1 in the range of 220-225.

Need an honest advice from you guys... Should I continue and retake CK? Can I get a residency even in the most pathetic places if I clear CK now? And would it be of any use if I give CK just for becoming an MD?

I am sorry to hear about your situation.. Must be very difficult for you after all the hard work and the time you invested.

As for your question, your chances will be tough definitely compare to those w/o attempts. But, as I researched programs for this year match, I saw some progs do not require 1st attempts. Probably the communities program will be more generous in this aspect. Build your CV, make contacts through conferences (either as participant or as volunteer), research or volunteering in hospitals that accepts residents.

That said, USMLE is an expensive journey. If you have the money, you're still young, and you really want it, then you have to realize that you need to double up the effort. Read stories of how people with this kind of experience made it. Dr Barone's website actually have several of these.

Be open to other careers too.. sometimes things happened.. that's life. Your life is not defined by being an MD only. You can still find other medical career. Research, pursue master degree/phd/public health etc. If you are an IMG, having those degree definitely helps to build career in your home country. Or might not even have to be medical career. Explore what other thing are you good at.

Chin up my friend. No one likes failures.. But we can learn from even the bitter experience and make it a positive one. You can learn perseverance through this. Having experienced unfulfilled expectations make you more understanding and compassionate to other people's shortcomings. Not everybody have these kind of social skills. Intelligence/academic achievement can only take you so far. Having soft skills will take you a long way in this life.

All the best for you. Hang in there.

Can anyone plz suggest what else to study in order to pass this exam? I am planning to retake it. I did all the usualstuff like MTBs n UW multiple times and honestly I don't believe my preparation was that bad. Now what else should I do?

Have you taken time to ponder on why and what went wrong in your preparation? It is crucial to identify the faulty methods and correct them to ensure you won't do the same mistake again.

How was your uw overall/UWSA/NBME performance? If you have the resources, I would suggest enrolling in prep course. The online live one is a lot cheaper than the live course. You get to ask the faculties anytime. Plus you have a student adviser that may help you to identify what improvements can be made in your study method.

If you do fine on assessments then its not your test taking skills that is the problem. Assessments are "tests" themselves. Maybe its the poor time management or your inability to function at your maximum capacity under pressure which is hindering you from achieving a score you're capable of.

Thanks. I do not have problems with time management at all. I always finish with enough time (im a fast reader). It could be the pressure thing, although i never feel anxious or nervous before the exam. Maybe i loose concentration after the first couple of blocks. But how can i improve this? :/
Don't know what else to do...

Maybe you had a bad day or a bad exam.
This exam is not a joke; it's pretty tough for everyone, you're not alone.
If you make the decision to continue down this journey, although usually I suggest MTB 2 + 3 + uworld as sufficient, I think you would benefit from Kaplan videos or Fischer's comprehensive cases. I used those and they were pretty good.
Try Kaplan videos esp for IM.
Uworld you need to stick to, you can try Kaplan qbank if you have already gone over uworld too many times and know the questions. But overall uworld is a better qbank for CK.

i guess so...i never go over NBME's after i do them...and i did it long time ago. I shouldn't go for the Kaplan SA 1 and 2 then, and do NBME 4 instead? What about NBME 7??

i think you need to study first....do your prep really really well...and then take an nbme. kaplan sa were very easy
you can do uwsa also....

but first you need to study. do your mtb2 + 3, and all of uworld w/ explanations, then take an nbme.

I keep getting 80% on Uworld, so im just reading the ones that i got wrong or the ones that i guess. Im also thinking about reading kaplan flash cards and watching fishers comprehensive cases...what do u think?

even when you get the question right, you need to read the entire explanation. including why the wrong answers are wrong.
i did the comprehensive cases and they were really good, i definitely recommend those.
didnt do flash cards, so can't say.
