Default February-March-April 2015 exam takers

Hi guys. So i have taken my triad, feb, march and april 2015. Plan is to give in february.
All others who want to give in similar time frame, we can get together and help each other!
So what books are you studying? My plan is MTB2 and UWORLD as main sources. Plus additions from Kaplan and MTB3...

Someone told be that fischer's 20 cases videos are also good for CK. And step 3 lectures (which ones i dont know) can also be helpful. Anyone got any idea about it?

Yes started MTB2 from the first chapter.
Reading through and also taking a look at MTB3. If there is any thing extra i add to MTB2. Also doing UWORLD with each chapter. Like infectious diseases questions after ID chapter.
Do you plant to practice any other question bank beside UW? Like Kaplan?

I subscribed 6 months, although i was thinking 3 but didnt want to be short of time, in case it takes 4 or so months. I started with offline, but someone told me that online one is much different now, lots of updated explanations and lots of tables, so i decided for online. Otherwise in step 1 i took 1 month online.
I started right after step1.
MTB 3 might not be necessary, but ive heard it is good for peads, gynae, surg. Cant say really, because i havent gone through yet.
Yes, im also doing Kaplan med along with mtb. but im really not finding it any useful. I cant say how paeds, gynae, surg ones are.
Yes, i think UW should be done simultaneously, it is a prep tool.
I dont know offline, may be there would be some torrents. I actually had bought the UW books (they are available in my country). But as i said, online has quite different explanations and new questions. Unless there is a newer offline version available, that i dont know of.

I think that is a good plan. But if you can print both complete books, maybe you can also glance the other mtb (like mtb 3 in IM,, or mtb2 in other subjects)

hey guys,im planning to give it by feb/march as well.
ive started doing uworld along with mtb2/3...ive done surgery, obsgyne, psych, just about finishing with pedia and then the plan is to tackle medicine.

i found this website where they have free online videos, onlinemeded.org
i watch the videos then follow up with mtb and uworld.

my question reviewing goes very slow though, but hopefully im learning stuff well so it helps me later on.
good luck.

Wink Jan-February 2015

Hi Guys, havent picked my trimester yet but definitely want to get this over with by the first months of 2015.
so far I have read MTB2 and 3 and starting kaplanqbank tomorrow, plan to do that for a month and then drill uworld, basically planning to read each book 3 times, thats my goal.
Im trying to understand rather than memorize so I keep opening my step1 FA to understand the pathologies and MOA of drugs, is this a good approach?
I feel better off this way actually and of course planning to read some STEP1 FA topics before the test is also on my plan (drug side effects for example)
good luck everyone!

Hey im in the exact same position as you. Going to take the exam with 4 months of prep. I have finished surgery kaplan and now doing peds. Its taking up way too much time so im giving each subject except medicine 5 days max and then il skip to MTB 3 which does seem to be a summary of Kaplan. Not planning to do any videos.

Im using the videos! And I really find some video lectures of IM more useful than others. They really emphasize on specific issues so I try to add them on MTB2 in case they are not there.

Any comments about MTB 3- 2015 edition?

I think the best book is mtb.
But the best resource is UW in my opinion.
It depends how fast you go and how much time you give. But i think you can do in 4 months. I am also planning to do in similar time period

so far i have watched obgyn videos, they are actually good, and contain all whats in the lecture notes, so i skipped the notes & watched them only.

surgery videos didnt like them at all, he is like reading the cases in the surgery kaplan book!

Hi there. Definitely each person has its own way to hit UW.
I started when I finished my first read of IM (with kaplan LN along with some videos, and MTB2), random mode is preferred although I'm only doing IM questions.

So far I'm doing pretty well getting 70 and 80% on UW. My goal is to have done UW twice by the time I take the exam.

Good luck

whats the pathophysiology behind this: high cardiac output-low peripheral resistance in liver failure? is it related to low albumin > hypovolemia> activating RAAS!

I will be applying for April. So maybe I should join. What are you gonna be using?

I will be using Kaplan Lecture Notes and videos, Master the Boards CK and UWorld. I'm thinking of getting Kaplan Qbank, but it's quite expensive. Probably money will be better spent with NBMEs? What do you think guys?

BTW, how many questions does UWorld Qbank contain? How long do you guys think will it take to go through it twice?

I did that in step 1 but it was still such a long and tiring process that i dont want to go through it again. I may try it for some topics from medicine. How are obs/gyne videos? Ive always hated the subject so i may review some of the videos at some point if they are good. Not planning to at the moment.

Hi guys.
so in UW it says that Exenatide (GLP1 analogue) causes weight loss but Sitagliptin (DPP-IV inhibitor) does not.
How does it make sense? Because what those DPP-IV inhibitors do is increase the level of GLP-1 so why dont they also cause weight loss?
Any ideas?
And what about Pramlintide & Acarbose/Miglitol? Do they cause weight loss? THanx

Kaplan Qbank is the first one I am doing> Didnot use it for Step 1. It is good but I don't know how good compared to Uworld. I plan to do both this time. kaplan Qbank has nice Qutorials but yeah some questions are really difficult or may be I am under prepared..

So far I'm doing pretty well getting 70 and 80% on UW. My goal is to have done UW twice by the time I take the exam.

Good luck
hey
can you please share which Kaplan videos did you go through? I am doing lecture notes and MTB-2 for IM. But I am just dragging..need to pace up..

thanks
Hi Ainat.
I watched Kaplan videos 2014 version.
I would say that so far Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Hematology, infectious disease and pulmonology have been the best. The lectures emphasize on high yield stuff, which they have been tested on the qbanks.

I believe if you are someone who learns from watching videos, i would say go for it!. If its not your case, then dont waste your time.

I've been told that Kaplan qbank is more high yield than UW, specially when it comes to manage time with lenghty qs stem, kaplan did a great job compared to UW. Explanations are the most important thing you can get from UW.

Right now Im only doing uw, as a learning tool basically. Adding stuff to a copy book and MTb.
Definetly I will leave KAplan qbank for the end.

Any comments?

Hi, welcome
In my opinion, UW should be started as early as possible, since it is the most important prep tool. Atleast i am doing so... Lets see how it goes.

Can anyone explain to me why a reduction in preload and afterload causes increased obstruction in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy?

as far as i know tiki taka notes are MTB + UW. and many people do them in the last few days for a quick review. i tried reading them now but i have paranoid personality disorder so i was doubting many things written there and i thought i would rather make my own notes.

HOCM the septum of the heart is abnormally asymmetrically hypertrophied, so forming an obstruction btw the septum & the valve leaflet, blocking the blood that leaving the heart.

the obstruction of HOCM increase when the the left ventricle chamber is small or more empty. & the obstruction decrease when the LV is larger & more full or dilated more>> the valve leaflet will be away from the septum so less obstruction

with reduction in preload>> less blood return to the LV >> LV smaller >> more obstruction

with reduction of afterload>> LV will empty more & easly >> therefore the LV chmber is smaller >> more obstruction

UW Time management like individual blocks or the whole UW?
I mean, are you saying you cant complete/manage questions of a block in the given time?
Or that you didnt go through the entire UW in your desired time?

Hmmm cant really say. I guess try improving ur reading speed. But i agree some questions are way too long, they bog u down with so much distracting information..
Also use UW as a prep tool, taking all the time u need, at least in the first go (if u are planning to do 2 reads). And then in second read u can really simulate like exam.
Just try reading a bit fast and highlight the things u deem imp (like abnormal labs, pointers in history etc) as u read through so u dont have to read the whole thing again, u can just look at the highlighted parts if u are confused between two options.
And if it seems you will have to think about a particular question a bit long, mark it and leave it for the end..
Thats all i can think of.

If its the cardio blocks then yea time is short. Way too long questions and weird ecgs but then it gets easier. I didnt have much problem with timemanagement in uw step 1 but i had to race against time on step 1 real deal . For step 2 even uw questions seem to be way too long for time . And since everyone says real exam is harder and lengthier than uw So i guess it is a bit more difficult now.

KLNs with videos by Dr. Sakala are really good. If you learn from videos, They are really good to cover all the basics. I would recommend the videos.

Ya i am woried becaus in exame questions are lengthier then uw.Ya esp cardio section consuming too much time , even in between block (questions) i loose my concentration due to dificuilt question and tirednes.I dont know other peoples have the same problem or not but i have it thats why i am too much worried

Try to skim the answers first and then read the vignette. Somehow it gives you a clue of what to look on the stem.
It has worked for me.

Good luck

Any input?

My suggestion is try to do each question in less than 60secs. if you take longer than that move on and come back to it later. You either know it or you don't. If you keep taking longer on a particular topic, review and master your weaknesses. (The 60 second rule is also a recommendation from the First Aid Step 1 writers.) Good Luck!

Just encountered drug ads and abstracts for the first time in uworld :O :O they take up soo much time!!! Freaked me out. :/

on the plus side im finding the step 2 uworld so much easier than the step 1 uworld. I wish the same could be said about the actual exam? :/

dear colleagues ,

just a quick question.

Regarding to the importance of the explanations of UW for CK. How much time is taking you for reviewing a 44q-block?

Thanks in advance.

Read this blog post: Five Biggest Mistakes Students Make With USMLE World

Take your time and learn the material. You cannot just skim through explanations. Hope this helps. It can take me up to 5 hours or more just reviewing a block.

http://www.medschooltutors.com/blog/...th-usmle-world

Read Number 2. Not spending enough time reading explanations in USMLE World

"This may be one of the biggest and most damaging mistakes med students make when utilizing Qbanks. 240+ scorers know that the true value of UWorld lies in its high-quality explanations. The questions are prompts. They are vehicles for practicing the pattern recognition, clinical reasoning, and test-taking skills that we need to score high on the USMLE. However, doing the questions alone and skimming the explanations is NOT enough to achieve mastery of the material. Top scorers understand that UWorld is best used as a learning tool, and most of the learning happens when reviewing explanations—especially the incorrects. If there are 5 answer choices and only 1 correct answer, 80% of the content will focus on the incorrect answers. We must read all of the explanations—every word—to get the most out of the question. Does this take time? Absolutely! Students come to us and say, "I'm spending too much time on UWorld sets. It's taking me forever to review my blocks." We say, "No you're not. That's how we learn." Med School Tutors has found that students should spend 2-3X as long reviewing explanations as completing sets. This review includes looking up content in HY resources and making flashcards. Don't skimp on question review!"

Hi, has anyone listened to fischers 20 cases lectures? Are they good? And what about step 3 kaplan lectures? Someone told me they can also be good for CK, any ideas?

It has worked for me.

I totally agree! I tried doing this and question blocks are going much quicker now. I'm reading the question first (yes the one line sentence with the "?" at the end) then skimming through the answer choices and finally reading the vignette. It gives you an idea of what you have to look for in the vignette and you can automatically start eliminating wrong answers and narrow it down to the correct one.

Regarding to Firsher's 20 cases, I have heard excellent comments about those videos ( I haven't watched them yet though). However, people recommend them after at least one read of MTB along with the qbanks.

I don't know anything about step 3 lectures.

Good luck

Regarding to the importance of the explanations of UW for CK. How much time is taking you for reviewing a 44q-block?

Thanks in advance.
at first I was taking up to 6 hours, which started to frustrate me, but after reading on so many posts that is the MAIN tool I just read them at "learning pace", I have now 20% of uworld and Im taking less time now I guess 4 hours and half. but I agree, so many nice and important info uworld gives I know its very high yield.

Definitely doing them after uworld, maybe next week, most of my friends have done it and recommended them, if you like Fischers style you are going to love them, some posts ive read say that it adds 5-10 points to your step2ck score. lets hope thats true.
I do like how Fischer teaches, even tho it can be stressing if you are short of time

Hey guys...this is a bit off-topic but I presume you are also applying this year like me. I completed my graduation in 2011 and will try to apply this year (Sept 2015) for 2016 match. So will they consider it 4 years or 5 years from graduation? Thanks.

My average is really low from other posts I see: first run, random, online 66% and I have 20% left.
Im not that stressed on the score cause there is so much info theres NOT in MTB, so that way I wont bang my head to the wall with frustration
what ive seen is that my score was improving after I did half of the qbank, so I guess is a good sign, was kinda hard for me to focus cause I was working part time, but now Im full time studying until test on march.

lets see how my NBME4 goes next week, that will definitely tell if my prep is going nice and smooth.

I've heard that most of the hospitals take account the moment you apply (in your case 4 y grad, but others will take the match date.. dont worry that much because you are still in the limit that get in.. <5 years grad or <3 years grad.
Good luck

Yes I have heard alot about it & can't make up my mind whether to buy it right now or later as for now MTB & Kaplan seem too over-whelming. Please do share your views about it if you happen to buy it..

Ive heard its a very nice book to study from, a friend recommended it to me as well and some of the testtakers experiences here with high scores used it, however it has 769 pages
so I guess if youd like to tackle ck and have time to cover everything is a good idea.

Default Hello feb-march-april test takers!

I'm doing mine at the end of march (30th) so officially 2 months to go and panic has set in. I've just started Uworld, maybe a bit late but hoping to power through it. For someone who asked about kaplan, I got through about 70% but can def see than Uworld qs are framed much better. The sim exams in kaplan had random extended matching questions ( same answer set for multiple questions) which aren't gonna come up so I would steer clear of those.
How is everyone progressing along? How many blocks do people get through a day?
Good luck and keep going all

Hii, nice to hear someone is giving ck close to my date (2nd week of march)
I have really started to panic and I even dream of answering questions (typical like my step1) I guess we just need to focus and study as much as we can
Im almost done with uworld, have 15% left, its really time consuming or I dont know if its just me.
trying to do 2 blocks one day and next day I do 1 block and so on, cause its taking so much time to review the questions and write all the info down.

Ive read so much about how scores are very important these days and thats my main concern, trying to beat that step1 score I guess is everyones goal.
anyways GOOD LUCK to everyone and lets keep ourselves motivated
we can do this.
