I'm wondering how we're gonna keep the patient with ruptured membranes without antibiotics!!!
steroids are given, to enhance fetal lung maturity from 24-34 weeks gestation. Antibiotics are indicated if the birth canal is colonized, especially by GBS or if chorioamnionitis is suspected which can cause neonatal sepsis or even meningitis if not treated. Culture of birth canal swabs is used to determine colonization and broad spectrum ab's are initiated.
