Unhappy Step 1 score 218. Please guide. Really anxious :(

Hi everyone
I'm an Indian IMG, need a visa and I will graduate next year.
I have 2 electives in Internal Medicine.
I just got my step 1 score and I'm really disappointed with it. I got a 218
I was hoping for atleast a 230
NBME 7 (10 days before exam) 235
NBME 12 (1 month before exam) 226
UWSA 2 245
UWSA 1 (2 months before exam) 230

I feel really depressed with this score. I've read a lot about how Step 1 lays the foundation for your USMLE journey. I have to start studying for step 2 CK but I have lost all motivation and I highly question the credibility of these assessment exams.

I want to apply in Pediatrics.

I will be very thankful if some of you can guide me. Should I continue with this journey or start preparing for Indian Postgraduate Exam.
218 is a lower score than the US average score. Do I stand a chance at
all ? Kindly help me. Please.

i know a guy with 250 + on step-1 & Ck 243 in step-3 in ireland now
& guy with 210,215 in University Program

yes Alot of Factors Matter, Score, Visa, & LUCk , they both have Different story & background, which favors one over another
But point is we Do not Know where we will end up in future

Dead or alive? ... surgeon or medicine?
Good Score , needs a hard work + good strategy .
people who scored less are not Less then anyone here on this Fourm,
stress, anxiety, responisbilties, luck, strategy everything Matters,

now CK.

read All of the Ck score Experiences,on this fourm 1st
save 4-5 months fo CK
study in a library 8-10 hours
1st month finish KAplan notes only very fast read.(should not be more then a month) read same topics from Mtb-2 IM
Mtb-3 All others & annotate into MTBs what is missing

now 4 months, you Gotaa Chew Usmle Wolrd... i mean it
do online, UW . Go through explantions take your own notes
download tiki taka Notes, google it
read them along......

1st read UW 2 months max & subject wise
then 2nd UW randome timed,
take Nbme & you should be ready

now that is My experience after making mistakes,

Good Luck,
be Proud

Hi Vita
First things first ...I want to say a big THANK YOU for such an awesome reply. Thanks for taking out the time and telling me a plan in such detail. I thought I would skip Kaplan and just read MTBs but your post has motivated me to read Kaplan. I'll try my best for step 2 CK because I don't really have a choice.
All the best to you.
God bless you. You are really kind.

you are welcome
thanks for kind words

please do make sure
you do not spend more time on Kapkan or mtbs then UW
UW is up to date
kaplan is just to have a basis for UW, so that explanations do not sound wierd

KAPLAN best books, surgery & obg /gyn

for IM you can can choose depedning on time

+ kaplan anotation into Mtb or while first read (with in a month all)
will pay you back

hope you understand my point

GOOD LUCK

Thanks a lot once again
I will start with Kaplan Surgery and I'll make sure I don't spend more than a month reading whatever Kaplan books I can.
I'm thinking about not applying for the next year's match as I will focus on CK now and try spending more time to get a good score.
Thanks for all this help

Hi,

I am an IMG and scored 219.

my nbme scores were 236 234 243

and UW SA 247

I know how it feels, just be strong, easy said then done but that's the only way.

for months I struggled with the feeling of helplessness and despair, even when I thought I finally get over it, it always showed up again.

at times i was so desperate that I thought I should quit

and guess what, that kind of thoughts never helped me a bit, only made it worse.

Except it, let it go and start pushing harder.

we have learned a very valuable lesson of being defeated, disappointed. Use it!

although I'm IMG, and scored 219 on step 1, NO WAY I'm going to stop pursuing my dream of becoming an anesthesiologist, others have done it with lower scores so we can do it too.

Will be taking my step 2ck in several months.

be strong mate, one day we will lough about it, but now we have to work hard

what I have learned from other's experiences is having a solid plan is very important

Here's what I did:

read kaplan notes once

read MTB2 for IM and 3 for other subjects, after every chapter read corresponding kaplan note and write everything missing in MTB (kaplan IM lectures by Conrad Fischer are great do them)

when you are finished with this do MTB 2 and 3 together writeing things missing in MTB2 IM from mtb3 IM, and vice-versa for other subjects (I think mtb2 is better for EM)

in the end you should have MTB2 IM and EM section annotated with things from MTB3 IM and kaplan notes
and MTB3 (other than IM) annotated with things from MTB2 and kaplan notes

then start kaplan qbank and do it subject wise, write everything new in your MTBs

I would read MTB in first half of a day and do qbank in second half (do it subject wise!)

when done I think it's time to get registered and start UW random timed mode

right now that's where I am. unfortunately I haven't done all the q from kaplan qbank (wish I had)

I guess I'll do SA exam 1month prior to my exam, also planing to do comprehensive cases by Conrad during last 2 weeks

all the best of luck, stay strong my friend you will succeed

Hi

I don't have the words to thank you for your wonderful post.

You can understand exactly how I feel because you have been there yourself.
And thanks for being so kind and encouraging me . You have made me so hopeful and your post has inspired me to work hard for ck.
Everytime I'll feel low...I'm going to read your post.
Thanks a lot.

All the best for your exam. I'll pray you get an excellent score because you deserve it.
I'll start with my ck preparation and will follow the advice you gave me.

God bless you.

Hi sunshine. I am an Indian IMG graduated last year with 3 clerkships in IM, step 1 253 (may 2013) step 2ck 258( October 2014) and clinical skills (December 2014)passed in high performance. As I recently passed ck and CS, I am very well versed both with the preparation and the recent changes they brought in. I would invite u to attend a free demo and see if it benefits u. All the best and yes a good score in 1 exam can sometimes cover up low score in other exams. Good luck

I tutor students for step 2 CK. Right now I am tutoring 5 students from which 3 of them have a low score on step 1 and are aiming for a high score on step 2 CK. If u would like to attend a free demo of how to go about this beast of an exam which has become quite unpredictable these days, ur most welcome

Hi Sunshine,

I am also an IMG from an indian medical school. My starting score was much lower than yours (not even passing). I used the company residents medical for step 1 tutoring and it was so helpful I was able to pass step 1 with a 214. They signed me up with a tutor and we had sessions over skype a few times a week and helped me organize a study schedule.

Best of luck!!

hey @ Sunshine~
i think you should put STEP 1 behind you and look into STEP 2 CK now
I know that everyone has hammered into our heads how important STEP 1 is(which is true upto an extent) BUT its not the ONLY thing that matters.
Program directors do get impressed by candidates who show a great bump on their STEP 2 CK score. So I personally think that as you have already put in the time and effort for STEP 1 which is a 'beast'! If you put in a little more you will get a great score on STEP 2 CK.
It is not as detail oriented as STEP 1.

Even I am currently preparing for STEP 2 CK.
I have a preparation blog if you want to check out...it may be helpful:
lovelivedreaminspire.blogspot.com
I daily blog my progress so that i feel i am answerable and stay motivated!

ALL THE BEST!!!

cheers!
