Question Best time to do CK; after which rotation?

Hey, although not related to the thread, I had a question, when do you think is the best time to do CK, specifically after which rotations? (I'm a CMG, will be starting rotations end of this month)

Some friends of mine told me if I want to go for the 2013 match, I'd have to be ECFMG Certified (meaning Step 1/CK/CS) BEFORE Next September (2012), what's the dillio? Am I essentially screwed for 2013?

Thanks

Considering CK is I.M, Pediatrics, Surgery, Psychiatry and OBGYN, perhaps a relevant time would be during the final months of your third year. That way you've had some exposure to the material and have a lot more time for studies than you would on the 4th year.

I wish I could've taken that route but to be honest, in my Carribean school, teachers had no sympathy for future USMLE takers. Basically it was not 'their problem' you were going to do what you had to do.

Question: Have you taken Step 1? If so, I'm sure you can practice a lot of MCQs, say 150+ per day and in 2 weeks time, given you take a day off each week, you've done 1,800 questions. Keep in mind that each question resolves or clarifies at least 3-4 concepts. If each question is 1 page, that's like reading 1800 pages; and not even Harrison’s I.M was 1800 pages (just guessing).

With that thought in mind, know that once you receive your score report for your last of the tests that ECFMG certifies you, it takes approximately 2 weeks to receive the diploma certification in the mail, making you officially ready for Graduate Medical Education.

If you take all of your Steps before August of 2012, you should have the score reports and ECFMG certification on time for Sept 1st. Please bear in mind that you don’t HAVE To apply Sept 1st , it is just highly recommended. Program directors will not choose the first of applicants just because it’s a first come first serve, they want to see the full selection. It’s like when you are buying an expensive car; you do not go to 1 dealer and buy the first car he hurls your way, you go to 2-3, 4 dealers and THEN make the choice.

As motivation, take a moment to realize how many questions you can do in literally 1 years time, assuming you will do minimum approx 1800 every 14 days until you know this by heart. When you sit for Step 2 CK, it WILL NOT be 1800 Qs, it will be approx ~ 346 questions!! It will be like a day of practice sitting at home!

To finalize, do you have to be ECFMG certified to apply to programs? Not necessarily. Does it help? Why of course. It is wise to research each program because at times they will say “Will require ECFMG Certification at time of interview,” or “Require ECFMG Certification at time of MyEras Application submission” or “Must be ECFMG certified by Match (March)” and lastly “Must be ECFMG certified by residency program start date (July)”.

I wish you the best of luck, and if your friends worry you, do not ask for their advice. Smile, brush them off and concentrate on yourself and the studies. Defer pleasure for now, because your future has the potential to be super bright and you will have many chances later on in life for ‘fun’.

That was my question too. People suggested finishing internal medicine rotation. Once you're done with that, you're ready to give the Step 2 CK.
