Default STEP 2 CK before STEP 1---235

hey guys

While I was preparing for the CK examination, I had no concrete reply to my concern about going for Ck before step 1.

Here is my story

total time:4.5 months
Kaplan LN, Videos, MTB 2 and 3, USMLE secrets.
Obviously Uworld as well.
went through Kaplan LN and videos once. read MTB along with it.
Started qbank around 80questions a day..made my own notes for the questions i got wrong or guessed on. First go---69%
NBME 6- 229

MTB 3 times....on an average took me 5 days to go through it once.
Then did Uworld Incorrects and marked.
NBME 4 - 225
one more revision of MTB and then did IM questions again from UWORLD.
read USMLE secrets. ranged between 75-82 percent

UWSA 234--- 4days before the exam

Marked the topics i got wrong in UWSA...read em again from MTB and Kaplan notes...quick review...had problems with SIADH, some Obg, immunodeficiency, congenital heart diseases.
read IMMUNOdeficiency disorders from FA step 1
did a quick review of biostats from FA step1

Exam day:
Reached at 8:30
Supposed to start at 9
Two blocks-no breaks.
took a 5 minute break after second and third block.

15 mins after 4 th block.

then took 4-5 minute break after almost every block.

took a 10 minute block before the final block. went in thinking, this is the last chance. read the stems well. answered.

TIME management: divided each block into 11 question every 15 mins.
Chose randomly on about 5 questions due to time constraints.
overall went ok with time.

Drug abstract: don't even bother...**** is hard.

Behavioral: know attributable risk and how to to calculate NNT

Step 1 questions: had about 15 to twenty questions....make an educated guess...know your immunodeficiencies well.... diarrhea causing organisms. Know the mutations in common genetic conditions.
Micro---know about meningitis and pneumonia causing organisms
Know how congenital heart diseases work in kids....esp TOF.

Waited for three weeks for the result..

Honestly, I was scared as many people told me that I will fail cuz i havent done step 1 and all.

FINAL SCORE : 235
I know its not the greatest score or anything but I am happy.

My background: Chilled my way through med school...not on top of the class or anything. passed lol

MY VIEW: Personally if I had to do it all over again, I would probably do step 1 first. Only reason I made this post is to let people know that if you are in a situation where you have to play around with the order in which you take your steps, its not the end of the game. It definitely needs a bit of extra effort but its doable.

Hope the residual knowledge from CK helps me out with my step 1 score as well.

GOODLUCK

Let me know if you have any questions...I will try to answer them to the best of my ability.

Thanks

How many questions from different subspecialities? e.g. OB/GYN,Surgery, Paeds and IM. If u can divide them in percentages.
About time management U said u had to guess 5 qs/ block or thru out the exam bcoz of time constraint? How many ekg and Heart sounds, CXR qs. What about preventive medicine qs?
Thank u for ur reply in advance.

Most part was IM and surgery. I missed about 5 questions overall..not per block.
EKGs were easy…just the common MI and AV node disorders.
Imaging wasn't too bad either…just the common ones with effusion, pneumonia, tb.
couple of murmurs as well…MR and AS mainly

OBG - i think it was more than i expected. know your pap smear protocol, breast cancer/mass protocol in both pre and post menopausal women.
Remember the VEAL CHOP for uterine contractions and fetal head movement relation.

couple of Micro slides were there are and one patho slide.

Preventive medicine i scored the lowest in. Its something that you probably pick up in clinics if you go to US med school.

Hope this helps.

there were a few derm slides...you will be able to figure out the lesion from the question stem itself. One or two slides i didn't really know.
overall derm isnt too bad, if you can't figure out the slide...do what you would do in a clinical setting...biopsy and histopath.

The stems are definitely longer than UWORLD..try to highlight the key points
when u read the stem.

I prepared that by doing uworld blocks in 40-45 minutes. get in the habit of reading it only once, highlighting while u read and then a quick glance if you are still not sure about the answer.

You will walk out of the test thinking, what the hell just happened in there!
But if you did well in uworld and been through mtb...you will be fine.

Hope that clears things a little bit.

Hey Congratulations!! It's a great score
I want to know is it necessary to do Kaplan LN for peds? I did MTB 2 / 3 both for peds so is that good? Or should I atleast watch the videos?
Frankly I've no stamina left to go over Peds Kaplan LN.. so plz tell if it's absolutely mandatory

Also what did u do for Psych, Ethics & Epidemiology?

Thanks in advance (:

Thank you!

To be honest, I did watch all the videos, even for psych and paeds.
On the exam, there wasn't as much paeds as I expected. I think Uworld does a really good job with paeds.

For ethics and epidemiology, I just read through First Aid for step 1 and UWORLD...the usmleworld biostatistic course is good too. I had the subscription to it, but never ended up using it.

So yes, U can easily skip watching the videos for paeds. MTB does a very good job. covers all the key points and high yield info. But make sure you know UWORLD cold.

Ethics questions will be pretty straight forward. If you do have couple of extra days, go through 100 cases by conrad fisher. some of my friends did those and did well.

i watched only the step 2 ck Kaplan videos..didnt go through any step 1 videos.
PSYCH i read from Kaplan LNs for ck...epidemiology i read from First aid step 1. I didn't annotate any of my books.
I did keep a notebook on the side for UWORLD. whatever question i got wrong, I wrote the explanation in it. that made it easier for me to review it a week before the exam.
