Smile My score: 254 / 85

Hello everybody.

This forum has helped me a lot so I wanted to post my experience.
As some of you probably already know I posted my step 1 experience earlier this year, so for more background information please see:
Got my score: 226/97

Anyway, I took the test on October 3rd. It was easier than expected in some ways but more difficult in other areas. I would say UW was a good predictor although I encountered some questions that I hadn't expected.

My prep material:
KLN: read them once, except for Psych which I did twice (it was one of my weaker areas)
MTB 2: really liked it although deficient in many areas but ok if you complement with KLN - I did when I read KLN, so I just added the missing points that seemed important to me. Total reads: 2 (3 in weak areas).
FA: I got an older version for free, so I checked it out, read it once, adding into MTB 2. Generally speaking I prefered MTB 2 (can't comment on MTB 3 as I have not seen it).
So, total study time was..., difficult to say...., as I was not consistent, not because I didn't want to, but if you read my step 1 experience, I did step 1 when 8 month pregnant, had my baby just a couple of weeks later as it came early, had to stay in the NICU, me staying at the hospital..., anyway.... Then baby's first month home as you can imagine, I didn't sleep much, was exhausted during the day, etc. So, I guess, I really started around June- July, so that would make it like 3.5 months. Study time varied extremely, I would do Monday-Friday but depending on what baby would let me, except for the last month were I had help at home and could do like 6-7 hours a day if lucky.

Questionbank: I did UW, overall correct 73 % (random, 44 Q blocks).
2 weeks before the test I did UWSA and made 252, so I would say this was an extremely good predictor for me for the real thing!!!

The week before the exam I reviewed my week areas and some Q. I didn't have time to review all the Q I wanted though.
I tried to take advantage of the Q posted in this block, too.

I did not do any NBMEs.

Day of the test: got there early, like around 7.30; people were nice, I had done step 1 in the same center so I knew what to expect. I did 3 blocks, break, and then 2 (I think), break and so on. I had enough time to finish the blocks and even review some marked Q. I left the abstract type Q for the end of the block in case there would be a time issue but I didn't have any problems.

I was shocked when I saw the 85 today, only to find out that they had changed the scoring system... sigh of relief....

Default congratulations

hi there,

congratulations and good luck with matching later. 254 is a great score. but what about this new scoring system? is 233 the mean? is the test getting easier or are ppl scoring better? previous scores with 254 had scored 99!! hmmm......

but anyways, the 254 is what's important here. in just 3.5 mths with a family to manage, u managed a 254.

congrats again.

hope the family is doing good.
tc.

Yes, 233 is the mean for US schools.
As for the new 2 digit scoring system, check the USMLE site. It's confusing as we're so used to the 99..., I don't think we're going to see many 99ers anymoer, as 254 is a pretty good score and it's "only" 85. Just think of the 3 digit score and forget about the 2 digit score as it's not important for anything anyway - ERAS uses only the 3 digit score, so I've been told.

And, thanks everybody!
