Wink SHICE Just finished the CK!

I finally took the exam today.. and i m still finding it hard to believe its over.

Exam experience

I usually become a little indifferent to reality when faced with stress, so that is how i felt when i drove to my exam center-Indifferent. I was a little disappointed to realize that my Prometric was one of those bigger, centers, with two test rooms, so it was very busy. I could not be indifferent anymore when I realized that the toilet was actually outside the center and almost took half a minute to reach and had to be unlocked with a key! So break time management was as hard as the exam itself !

My test started at 7 am. Along with being finger printed, I was actually scanned with a metal detector, every time i signed back in. I am not sure if this is a new rule or if this procedure is unique to the Prometric at Culver city.. but this really limited my break timings.

About the exam- I would say it was the toughest set of questions I had ever done. Approximately 50% questions covered 2/3 rd of the screen, some actually had to be scrolled down to get to the answer choices..and barely a handful questions were UW qbank size. So unlike others, my exam definitely was not similar to UWorld at all. Neither was it like any NBME. Very lengthy and tough questions. Unlike Step 1 there weren't many clues in the question stem either. I got quite a few of the drug ad and research questions. The subjects were covered equally. I was only happy to finish all the questions within time. For the last few blocks i was not able to review my marked questions. I would have an average of 10-12 in each block.

Many thanks to Asiafzal, I actually took her advice, and adjusted my chair height before i started the test. and also adjusted my headphone volume in the tutorial and then skipped it.

Break time

Stretching break(approx 1 min) After the first block. I did not leave my station, just paused, stretched my back, took a few deep breaths and started the next block.
7 mins after the second 2nd and 3rd block
15 mins lunch break after the 4th block. As much as I wanted to have lunch after my 5th block..i took after the 4th because i started feeling tired and hungry, and I didn't want to stress my self at all. Lunch was a small sand which and a bottle of juice.
8 mins after the 5th block
8 mins after the 6th block
7 mins each after the 7th and 8th blocks

I really couldn't make it back to my station within 5 mins if i wanted to use the restroom because of the distance, therefore my breaks look a little nontraditional. But that's the quickest i could get. I used the restroom in every other break. I sipped on a little bit of 5 hr energy in most of my breaks since I hadn't slept too well the night before and needed it to keep me awake. I ate a piece of chocolate in all breaks to sustain sugar levels. And whenever i could i splashed my face with cold water. I also didn't lock my locker..saved me time with fumbling through keys.

Prep
I used MTB-CK for most. I did use MTB-3 initially but I found a lot of mistakes in that book. Also because i just wanted to read and revise one book. I annotated it heavily from UW. I would say UW was my biggest resource. I used CMDT-2011 on the side for reference in case there was any confusion, as i consider it to be unquestionable.
My total prep time was 4.5 mo with a 10 day break in the middle. I didn't study on weekends and took both the days off. I finished UW once. My-timed, unused, random-average was 72% The last 10 blocks average was in the mid 80s. I revised only incorrect questions. I was able to finish MTB-CK cover to cover 3 times. the last 3 weeks I noted down anything I didn't know in a notebook. And the last 3 days before my exam I just read those notes.

Self Assessment
Nbme 4 1.5 months before exam 430, correlation 216.
This tensed me a whole lot. I was doing fairly well on UW so i was a little surprised. But from my step 1 days I've never done well on NBME (10 days into my exam i got a correlation of 221 and i scored 241 on the real test)
UWSA a week before my exam-680 with a correlation of 254. This really boosted my confidence, but i think it ended up doing more harm than good as i eased up a little bit and took a lot of time off my revision in the last few days.
I did use other NBME between NBME 4 and UWSA but i did a block every morning as i had run out of unused questions and i wanted to continue the trend of doing one timed test first thing in the morning every day. (i am not recommending this however as NBMEs are great testing tools and best used as a simulated test.)

I hope this is useful for the future test takers. I have my fingers crossed for the result (but my hopes are not too high as the questions were pretty challenging, and i feel i did average

Default Question difficulty

First..Congrats on completing your exam. Hope all the hard work pays off when you receive your score. Please do keep us updated on how you did.

I would like to ask about Q difficulty. As I do UW in timed mode, I find a good amount of the questions to be challenging and requiring a more thought (a good glance before answering)..would you say that the actual q difficulty is on the lines of such questions in UW or more difficult? and what is the majority of such questionsper block, approximately? Would be great if you can answer these q for me. Thank you and GL.

Thanks Aasia, Seetal and Usmledee. I am still recovering from it. The last month was especially very rough as I was having trouble sleeping. I had to use sleep aid. Started with melatonin then went on to Benadryl and then eventually Zolpidem. I had to postpone my exam by a week. I don't think it was a good decision because by the end I felt I had started to forget. And zolpidem would make drowsy so I didn't get much done anyway. No I have rebound insomnia since I am trying to get off zolpidem. This exam has affected me much more than i'd imagined. I hope I recover from all the stress soon.

@ Usmledee. Like I said, the questions were the hardest I had ever done. If at all, I would liken it to the hardest questions on UW. I think in a block I just had maybe say 5 questions which were easy. I had very few questions asking me about the next best step or the initial test. And I was very glad whenever I saw one of those. The majority dealt with diagnosis or pathophys. There were times during the exam when I would just shake my head in dismay at the difficulty of the questions. I think these guys are trying to make it as hard as they can. But you know, there are always trends. Like few weeks before my step 1 I heard from few friends that the exam was very tough. And the week I took my exam they were pretty easy. One of my friends took the exam on the same day at another centre felt the same. So I guess the diificulty level is not constant. Keeps changing and also influences your score. Like Aasiya was saying she got very hard questions and scored pretty good. So don't be scared my friend. Just know that you are doing your best and if you believe in God it helps to put your trust in him. Practice questions. It's a good thing u re doing timed UW. I would recommend reading the entire explanation than just the answer.

Please feel free to ask more questions in case you have any.

SHICE you seem to have a experice very similar to me , i too get very tense about exams , i too scored around 220 on NBME and then decided to postpone exam , and took exam very recently. The questions DEFINITELY were tough... in my step 1( on which i scored around 250) i marked on average 4- 5 questions , and at max 7 questions in the block... in this exam i was marking 13-15 !! I felt what the hell was wrong. Also, i did NOT sleep the night before and this had impaired my judgement quite a bit, as i realised when i recalled the questions i missed. But all said and done , i really hope that both of us do well... and its reassuring to hear that even someone as well prepared as you found the questions hard....

Hey.. I guess we guys took our exams when these guys decided to make it tough.. i hope the scoring is relative and we guys come out fine.
I would suggest that you dont try to evaluate yourself by recalling questions.. i know thts only natural, and i was doing that until yesterday.. but i just told myself It's Enough. We guys should stop being hard on ourselves and take it easy.
I m busying myself with looking for USCE now. And i think its a good idea to apply for ECFMG certification now.. we should have it 2 weeks after the score comes out.
GL for the score! i hope its as good as Step 1!

Thumbs Up

Hey Shice, good luck to you! Your experience on taking ck exam was very similar to my experience. I took the exam on 27th October and i felt that it was the hardest exam of my life. it was neither like usmle world , NBME ,or like Kaplan. They were so lengthy and i lost most of the time scrolling down, up and down. i hardly found 10 questions per block that were direct and easy with clues that led to the correct diagnosis. They were vague ,as though the case description would fit in for 2 diagnosis that i had in hand after eliminating others.

One mistake that i did in the exam was, i did not by heart the lab values and i did not adjust the monitor or chair according to my comfort level.
I had lot of strain on my eyes and neck and finally called for help during the break time after 5 blocks. had i done that before or if someone would have guided me about it my stress levels would have changed. Having said that now, that it is all over and nothing could be done rather than just waiting with hopes to pass the exam for all the hardwork and sacrifice invested on it.

One thing that I saw on this forum lately was all exam takers who took their ck exam during october felt the trend of the exam has become so hard.
Some of my friends did take ck exam few months before me and when i heard from them about their experience they graded the exam as "Moderate- Easy" and even said that it was more like usmle world and some pointed it out as Nbme.
That evening as i stepped out of prometric after the exams I nearly cried and felt was it just me who did the exam bad, or were the questions so hard.
How come it was fine for the rest of my friends who took their exam when i have also done so much of hardwork just the way they had done.I used similar study materials like they used. i could not console myself nor could i answer the questions which raised on my own mind, but with hope am waiting here for my results that i have done the best i could ,with all my heart and energy that god will surely help me pass in this exam. I really hope i will be back here if god willing to share my exam results and help other friends who are heading towards the same direction just like me

I hope the same goes for you and wish you good luck my friend!

Good luck with your results!

Thank you. I would like to tell you something. Dont loose your confidence because you still have so much to give and you know yourself better than anyone. just forget about how the exam is going to be and put all your energy into the preparation with positive vibes. we have just shared our experience, it does not mean that you will also face the same.

dont think about the outcomes, but see to that you give your very best and finally you should be satisfied with what you gave and the rest is just not into our hands, we dont have power to change the outcomes, but yes you can do ur best. After you have done the exam surrender it to the almighty he will take care. never give up! prepare well Do not be carried away with our experiences.

Do your very best! good luck!!

OK I will say this from what I've noticed about people who come out of the exam feeling it was VERY HARD..not like q's they've practiced. MOST of these doctors come out with AWESOME scores. They report back to us saying they scored high, scores we would all wish for ourselves. And I personally know some of those that took CK and said it's just like UW, and they scored OK, very decently too, but I noticed that it was not near the higher scores of those that had a tough exam. This is honestly something I've noticed over a good amount of time for both Step1 and 2 and I even wanna say CS. My cases were insanely difficult and I came out bawling my eyes out in tears, almost 100% confident I failed, yet I passed with great performance. How? Don't know. Maybe the exams are just all structured that way. I guess they enjoy the element of surprise. I hope I am not proven wrong for the sake of those who suffered a tough test and possibly even myself in the near future.
It's a rough road ahead and I just wanna say thanks to all of you who take your tests and come back to share with us your experiences to give us SOME insight of what the heck is going on out there, so thanks and GL.

Hi Road2success,
Thanks for sharing your experience.. I wish it wasnt this way.. but sadly we did get a very tough set of questions. Please dont lose hope.. i am sure you have done to the best of your ability.. there's only so much we can do. But i m pretty sure you will definitely come back here and share your result because it will be awesome. Just keep trusting and believing in God.. and i m sure all your hard work will pay off.

I guess there are always some weeks when the test is tough and then there are weeks when they're easy. and i think its only fair to adjust the score. So i am very hopeful for you all of us who have given the exam in the tough period..that we ll all do well.

Talking about the exam (although i have completely stopped thinking and reminding myself of it).. I threw up in my last break. I just couldnt handle the stress brought about by the onslaught of one tough question after the other.. I also got a headache.. and my insomnia continued for several days after the test..and all the questions would keep spinning in my mind and i d constantly be thinking about what i answered and how i answered..it was affecting me and my family too much.. I have finally been able to curb all the stress by engaging in other things.. I suggest you the same.. family and friends definitely help and just get busy with something different or something new.

Lets all pray for the very best.. Shice

Hey thanks usmledee..
I really hope what you say is true.. for me and for all others who had a bad experience on the test day. i think its only fair that the scoring should depend on the type questions we do.. and i feel not just the no. of correct questions but evem the questions are compared to a preset or standard difficulty level they have. Otherwise it definitely will be unfair for those who do get tougher questions on the exam.

Well congrats for not just passing but doing well on CS despite having difficult cases. Take care

Hi Rulz,
No I didnt use Kaplan altogether. I confined myself to MTB-CK and UW. I did use CMDT-2011 on the side, but tht was just to look into topics that i wasnt sure about or needed extra info. Because i used only Mtb-ck i was able to revise it thrice. I annotated my MTB-CK heavily from UW, so with that i was able to not only able to revise mtb-ck thrice, but also all the uw notes with it.
I revised only my incorrect question form UW.

Many students use Kaplan.. and i think it totally depends on where u are whn u are starting your prep.. If you have taken your Step 1 recently then chances are you will not need Kaplan.. but if this is yr 1st exam..or you took yr step 1 long ago or you need ot brush up your concepts or basic sciences then doing Kaplan is adviseable. In my case although i started out with MTB-CK, i'd thought i will go back to kaplan in case i feel MTB is insufficient. My UW scores improved as i went along and i felt, whatever MTB-CK lacked, UW made up for it. I also read CMDT on the side, because from my med-school days i have always relied on tht book and i m comfortable with it.

I m not sure about FA as i didnt use the book. I didnt go with DIT either.. although i would have wanted to since i found it very helpful for Step 1. But i wasnt left with any extra time at the end of the day to listen to the videos.

I think the best way to gauge your progress and prep are timed random UW questions.. if you see a gradual improvement in your scores..means u re good..else you might need to freshen up concpets from another source, preferably Kaplan.

Hope this helps

Thanks! it help me a lot, im thinking on go over Surgery and Internal Medicine only, im as we speak reading Surgery. I took step 1 oct 2, so i just received my score last weds.

Many friends say i may just need those 2 books and go over MTB and FA then the Qbank UW or Qbank Kaplan... But, you didnt mention FA at all... so what's the real book to read ? MTB or FA ? or both ?

Thanks in advance... and sorry for so many question lol..

I would highly recommend UW.. use it not only as a qbank but as a resource too.. because it has really superior literature. DO one timed random block every morning, and as some people advice.. do tutorial subject wise, along with the topic u re reading. I did use mtb so i will recommend it. I know many people with 99s who used only MTB for CK. I havent read many good reviews about FA for Step 2 and thts the reason why i didnt use it. Besides, using too many books will also make revising a little tedious for you. So its best to use few books.. Mastering those few books is the key..! GL

and thanks for your good wishes

Thats a great question. Bc contrary to step 1, most of the people keep telling me to read surgery and IM and jump into mtb and and uw. Some others say fa.

ok ure in my prayers!

my prep is going ok so far. was panicking a bit with the 55% from kaplan qbank (did ~300 questions) but then sam88 told me tht i had nothing to worry about and that i should continue attempting more questions. kaplan qbank is a good learning tool. i am learning a whole lot. from questions that i by chance got right and by questions tht i got wrong.

my exam is end of jan. im hoping for an imporvement by end of dec. just in case i may need to postpone my exam to feb instead. lets hope for the best aye?

Default Score update

I got my score today. 238/83. I am happy I didn't to terribly bad as my exam was so difficult. But I am quite disappointed I really would have wanted to do a little better than step 1.

Thankyou everyone who have helped, motivated, supported and encouraged me through this exam.
