Default My 244 experience

I started preparing for ck 2 months after taking step 1.

step 1 score totally demoralised me, I was depressed and disappointed, on the verge of giving up I managed to get myself together and started preparing for ck.

I made myself believe that I should stop thinking about step 1 and concentrate on ck, I "knew" that "erasing" it from my memories was my best option.

I gave 2 reads to kaplan notes and watched kaplan IM videos, in my opinion for those who have already taken their step 1 kaplan notes are a bit worthless, although read it if you have time. (I really loved the surgery cases)
for subjects other than IM & EM use both MTB 2 and 3.
UWorld is a great tool, do it random and read every single explanation there. Remember it's your main text, I would write everything in MTB 2 and 3. I suggest doing UW twice.

Anyway, after studying really hard and getting 63% average in UW I decided to give NBME 4 a try and to my disappointment I got 217, although feeling bad, I kept on studying harder, increased my study time and 10 days out took NBME 7. it returned 221. I was crushed, I felt totally destroyed, I just didn't know what to do and feeling hopeless I started a thread here asking for advice, DNA10 gave me a link to his/her experience which I totally suggest reading, and once again thank you my friend for your invaluable help.
It is NOT always about the assessment scores!

I took several days off, a short break from this crazy race. I knew I couldn't stop now, I had to do it and clearer than every now I knew I had to forgive myself, forgive everything and step 1 experience in the first place. so here I was with 63% UW average, 217 and 221 in NBME 4 and 7. with all my heart I accepted my situation, stopped being obsessed with high scores and "being super best" or whatever. I totally exposed myself to myself.

so I postponed my exam and for the remaining 1.5 month I studied with all my heart, I believed that persistence would help me do my best on exam.

5 days out I gave UWSA and got 247

EXAM DAY:

No need to say I was full with motivation, anger and belief. first 5 blocks went ok, last 3 were like hell, I constantly pushed myself beyond limits. I don't remember how many ecg questions I got but all of them were really easy and basic, one of them was mobitz 2 don't remember the others. 2 heart auscultation qs, one of them was PDA and another was pshhhhhh fshhhh tshhhh. 1 abstract with 3 questions which I think I got wrong. after the test was over I was sure the scores would be somewhere between 215-225. this exam will kick the crap out of you, it will be the longest day in your life, and chances are that by the end of the day you'll be traumatised, but thats normal, don't freak out, just believe in yourself and keep doing the questions, once your done with the block forget it, neither should you think about the blocks to come, you should either be thinking about a question in front of you or enjoying your brake! plan every single minute in advance, write that plan on a piece of paper and take it with you at the test centre. trust yourself

there are many experiences out there and none can encompass everything concerning step 2 ck, my experience thread is no different so I'm open to your questions.

lastly, I know there are many standing where I stood several months ago and I hope my experience will strengthen them. never give up guys, persistent.

I wish you everyone the best of luck and success.

Hi dr icu I am always afraid from the drug questions. Even though I try to read the whole abstract which waste so much time and even then I don't get them right! So what will you suggest me in drug and abstract questions? Thank you

For sure i would suggest skipping them and doing after you finish all the other questions. as forthe strategy i would quickly look at the abstract/adto get the general idea and then would read the question after which I would start looking for the information they asked.

How often u were successful in this technique of solving questions! I find it very hard even if I try to read the few lines and the questions. Any other suggestions from you?

it worked the best for me, still I couldn't get half of the questions

just make sure everything from step 1 FA statistics is super clear, I guess that's all we can do

I didn't use anything other than FA and I was recommended to do so by others too on this forum, don't waste your time on anything else

I only did NBME 4 and 7.

as for the mastery series I did all of them except psychiatry and neuro. they are good and I would recommend doing them.

yes, during those 1.5 months, I kept on reading MTBs over and over again + did UW second run and after that switched to mastery series. I think one should never concentrate on just one subject and forget about the others, even for a short period of time, no matter how weak you are in that area.

also in my first post I forgot to mention 20 cases by conrad, I watched his cases (I think all of them) and overall I would say there are good, reinforces the concepts you should know cold. I would usually watch them at the end of the day, once I was too tired to read.

and most important guys: be aware of burnout!! take 1 day off every week, believe me you'll save more time overall that way

Hello ICUinWonderland! Congratulations on your amazing score and thank you for sharing your experience with us.
I am in my last few days of prep. You mentioned doing the mastery series. Did you manage to find the answers and explanations for the questions ? And if you did, where from? I did form 1 in Medicine and haven't found clear answers. So I'm feeling like it's taking up my time at this moment.

Tell me please how many times in sum you pass MTB 2ck???
And what do you think about a Kaplan Lecture notes as contribution mainly.
Are they the must in this preparation or just a boost of points that may add to your exam score?

Thanks in advance.

These are 20 lecture videos on 20 cases dr. Conrad fisher believes to be most high yield, overall they are good and does reinforce all the know cold concepts, plus if you like conrad's lectureing style maybe you'll like these too
