Question Diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus

Hi all:

In Kaplan pediatrics, it says that the diagnosis of DM type 1 is to do glucose tolerance test, but i remember UW for step1 says that the oral glucose tolerance test is usually reserved for screening pregnant women for gestational DM. A diagnosis of DM type 1 is to do fasting blood glucose measurements.

So who is right? What is the rationale for this?

Thank you!

Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines
Pediatric Diabetes 2009: 10(Suppl. 12): 3–12
Definition, epidemiology and classification of diabetes in children and adolescents

An OGTT should not be performed if diabetes can be diagnosed using fasting, random or post-prandial criteria as excessive hyperglycemia can result. It is rarely indicated in making the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in childhood and adolescence.
