Show Teeth Got my score! 246/99

Hi there,
It's been about 2 months i have been inactive on this forum, but those who are here since august might just as well remember me!

After my Step 1 score of 204/84, i thought of quitting the USMLE route, but i was encouraged to give another try through this forums.

I gave my exam on the 23rd of august and got my result yesterday. It was delayed by over 2 months because of a student status verification report and many postage problems and delays. Finally after 3 restless months, i have my score.

All my preparation was based on all the threads, posts and comments posted in this forum. I read all relevant threads related to preparation materials, score correlations and other advise. All the polls here give you a perfect choice to make.

Just like everyone, i used the Kaplan Step-2 CK lecture notes, all Step-2 videos Kaplan Qbook, UW, UsmleConsult (which i had 3 free subscriptions for, because I was a winner in this forum's monthly contest) and MTB-2CK. I did prepare extensive review notes, about 200 pages from everything i read and used it for review in the last 4 days.

Preparation time: Exactly 3 months (22 may-22 august).

I did write down my exam experience just after the exam, but did not post it because i was not confident of my performance. Wanted to post it after getting the score and this delay further gave me weird thoughts about failing the exam. Only after writing the exam, i really felt the way everyone feels: Ace it or Fail it! It was a dilemma. I think we can never be sure of our performance till we get the result, partly due to experimental questions and new formats (research abstracts and statistics, which i am pretty bad with) being introduced just 3 weeks before my exam. I had 7 of these questions. 2 in block 1, 2 in block 2, 2 in block 6 and 1 in block 7. They took a considerable amount of time (about 7 mins for every question, but i felt that the other questions of these blocks were smaller that the other blocks.

Regarding experimental questions, i decided to leave each and every question that i felt was impossible to answer and marked it for review in the end, because i read in many threads that the toughest ones are "possibly" experimental. It may not be proper strategy to guess them as so, but it did work out for me. I had a bad time dealing with these kinds of questions in Step 1, hence the lower score. Remember, if you face a very very tough question, MARK IT, MOVE ON and come back later IF you have time. Concentrate on the easier ones (the ones we know) first. Losing 1 question may not lose you more marks than losing 10 questions that we may answer properly.

Regarding time, I think it's fair. 60 mins for 44 questions is OK, but for me, it was exactly enough. I did finish 5 minutes early in 2 blocks but all the others, i was at 58-59 minutes. Block time never ended while i was still answering. I practiced my questions like that. While doing Uworld, i did set 53-55 minutes as maximum time instead of the whole 1 hour, so that i can train to respond quickly. Break time is a mess. I split my break time (1 hr + 10 mins from 2 blocks) into 8 parts. There were no other USMLE takers in my center, so check in and check out process was fast. When there were others in front of me, the test center staff gave me priority because all other exams like GRE don't have authorized breaks. They just have emergency breaks that do not involve finger scanning and signing. Just need to check the pockets and ID.
I used about 5 mins after every block to use the washroom, wash my face, made it sure to eat something after every block and atleast drink some water or red bull or black coffee. My locker was actually full of food and drinks. Coffee and red bull are a must, because fatigue makes us sleepy, and we need stimulants (caffeine). They are of course diuretic, so we need to take regular breaks as well.

I started feeling a little bit drowsy and sleepy during the 4th block and it continued till the end of the exam, that added to my uncertainity in expecting my result. Thats another reason why my step 1 might have been affected and i tried to avoid the same mistake again. Washing your face with cold water during breaks really really helps.

Regarding exam content: I think the graphic distribution by steptaker that shows relative disrtibution of each subject on the exam (50% for IM, 13% peds, 12% OBGYN, 7% psych and 5% epidemiology and about 15% surgery) which is available on this forum, was true for me too. Although we can't count and remember the number of questions from each subject because of exam tension, i think that estimation is close.

Questions are a mix of Uworld and NBME but more standard than both of them put together. I did about 50% of USMLEconsult questions but did not find them of proper standard, and the score estimator of Usmleconsult is of very bad quality (my opinion). Questions are longer than that of UW by about 20%. Exam content and tested data are similar to UW random timed mixed blocks containing all subjects and all sections of all subjects. I had approximately 5-6 questions that were very tough for me in each block and i marked about 8-10 questions fro review at the end of each block, which i was able to finishh successfully. Immunology and Embryology was tested heavily on my exam. I think that taking step 1 before 2CK is a good idea because it will help us during this exam. Cardiovascular disease was also a hot topic in my exam. I did get a star in it. I'm pretty bad at OBGYN, but i think it was not very tough as well. Psych and surgery were very basic and totally similar to Uworld.

Next, the statistics:

Usmle World: 71% correct
UWSA: 243

Usmle Consult Qbank: (about 50% answered): 63%
Usmle Consult Scorrelator: 253

NBME 4: 242

USMLE STEP 2CK score: 246/99

So you can see that UWSA + NBME 4 are a very good predictor of real exam performance. I have seen hundreds of experiences in many forums and did find the same correlation. Closer the scores are on these tests, the more accurate they are. The reason i did NBME 4 was because it was the newest form and it was predicting accurately.

Finally, i wholeheartedly thank all Forum Staff: Steptaker, Sabio, Rasheed and Lee, users Haisook, Seetal, arunjose, miss patho, Kais_MD, and everyone else who were involved in the hundreds of threads we started and discussed during my prep. I'd usually say, "keep your hands off the internet" to my friends, but this particular website was indispensable in my prep for step 2ck.
I've applied for CS and had 1 visa rejection so far, but i will apply for the visa again and see you all in the CS thread.

Good luck to all who are yet to take the CK and reading this post. Hope it was informative enough and you are free to ask any questions or doubts as this is what i can do to contribute to this website. Please try to post it as comments here rather than sending me private messages as discussing here will be informative for others who just read through and may answer their queries as well.

Regards,
Cool_atomic

depends on whether your med school participates in the EMSWP, an online program that can be used to verify student's current status in the med school. That you will know by contacting your med school directly. In case yes, then your result won't be delayed because your med school just has to reply to an e-mail. If not, ECFMG will send your school, a letter that must be signed and stamped as form 183. Then you will have to send it back to the US and it will take about 2 weeks after that to get the result. It all depends on the postal people. If 3 weeks have passed and you did not get your result, then contact ECFMG immediately by phone.
Hope this helps!
Good luck for your score.

Hey Thanks.
My school doesnt participate in EMSWP. Since you already took step 1 still when u were student (that i am guessing) did they do same thing i.e verifying from your medical school before declaring your Step 1 score
While searching this topic across forums i figured out that they do this when we apply for our steps when student and give it when graduated or the result come out after we graduated. Is this the case with you ?

My exam is in December and will graduate in May so was trying to get it clarified.

Thanks a lot.
all d best

hey kais_md!
long time,i know but these procedures are very lengthy. I graduate next june, and yet to take step 2cs, i got a visa rejection recently and will apply for a visa again, so participation in the match depends on the visa. just hoping for a positive response on the visa.
what about you?

hey hari!
Regarding books and all material required for prep, i have mentioned clearly in my post. That is what most others would recommend too. I think the time you have might not be sufficient to prepare for step 2ck. It was very hard for me to adjust in 3 months time. You don't even have 2.5 mths and you have not taken step 1 yet, so things and material might seem a little strange and there might be many differences in parameters between what books you read for medicine and what's standard in the USA. You will need time to acclimatize.

Regarding mph, it needs gre and toefl too i think. It actually depends on the college you apply too. Some take purely on basis of toefl, others need both. It's expensive too but it gives you a whole of 2 yrs in the USA since its a student visa (F1). So if you want to spend another 2 years and a whole lot of money, then go for it. Having a MPH degree is not a big plus for IMG's. Scores are.

If you are a fresh graduate, taking step 2ck before step 1 is ok. But be sure to go through immunology, biostatistics and embryology and basic biochemistry and neuroanatomy before preparing for step 2 ck. I think knowing these things is a big plus in step 2ck. It covers the gap between the 2 steps.

Hope it helps!
Regards,
Cool_atomic.

yes, they will send a verification if you are a student while taking the exam. Better be prepared and expect the letter than to know on result day that your score will be very much delayed.

Default How was your start in UW ?

What was your initial score when you started ?

I'm asking you this question because I finished 30% of UW and still getting

65% as an average ,, I'm sooo upset ,,

Is there a chance that I can improve my performance and raise it to the

average of 70% or Am I trapped in the 65% average ?

Please give me an advice regarding that knowing that I finished Kaplan

lecture notes twice ,, MTB twice and Kaplan Qbnak twice (offline and online)

,, so what can I do more to improve myself ???

hey!
1) i did my uw @ 26days exactly!. Thats around 100 questions/day, but i made lots of notes which took time.

2) kaplan q book is just revision of kaplan lecture notes. its about 1000 questions and you can do 2 blocks/day along with kaplan lecture notes! its just basic and helps consolidate data from the lecture notes. its in no way similar to kaplan qbank or uworld, but its pretty good.

hope this helps!!!

Default congratulations

im so happy for u. yes i remember u. finally u got ur results. u must be so happy. so now busy with matching etc? getting ecfmg papers in order i suppose?

u mite be the last to get a 99 score. the 2 digit score has changed now. no one knows for sure what a score as good and wonderful as your 246 would correlate to on a 2 digit score.

but nonetheless. thats a great score i wish u all the best.

again... truly happy for u.
